Chapter 7: For All Time. Always.
---Excerpt
“You can’t kill me,” He Who Remains said, his arms wide as Cold stopped, panting. “I already know what’s going to happen. See?”
He vanished again, reappearing back in his seat.
“It’s a trick,” Cold snapped, retreating to his seat, and ignoring Sara and Leonard.
“Don’t you wonder how I’m able to get out of the way just before you kill me?” He Who Remains asked.
“No.” Leonard’s voice was calm, and seemed to soothe Cold enough to make him sit. “It’s that TemPad you’ve got there.”
Leonard gestured to the device on He Who Remains’s wrist, and Sara could see that it was a form of a TemPad, like the one in her pocket.
“Right.” He Who Remains grinned at Leonard. “But how do I already have it loaded up with everything I need to know to keep from being killed by you?”
Leonard was silent, and He Who Remains looked at each of them with a grin. “It’s easy. I know it all. And I’ve seen it all.”
He got up from his chair, going to the window behind the desk and spreading his arms wide. “Everything you guys did on Lamentis, I saw. All the stuff the TVA didn’t know about, I knew.”
Turning, he looked at Cold. “All the scheming.” He looked at Sara and Leonard. “All the…talking you did last night.”
Sara felt a flare of anger at that. That had been for them. She put the cup down and started to rise. Leonard’s hand tightened on her shoulder, and she stayed in place.
He Who Remains seemed unconcerned as he came to stand behind his chair, leaning on the back with a wink. “Quite sentimental, very touching stuff by the way.”
“No,” Leonard said, pulling his hand away from her as he put his cup down. “We broke out of your perfect timeline. That’s how we got here.”
“Wrong!” He Who Remains said with a sing-song voice. “Every step you took to get here—Lamentis, the Void, I paved the road. You just…walked down it.”
Sara felt her heartbeat in her throat. No. They had won. They broke free. They solved the Void, not him. Not some…Time-Keeper.
“And I have the rest of it,” He Who Remains gestured to one of the books on his table, “right here. Everything’s that going to happen. There’s only one way this can go.”
