 ⍟ 𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚅𝙴  𝙻𝙴𝙰𝙽𝙴𝙳  𝙱𝙰𝙲𝙺  𝙾𝙽  the  couch,  one  muscular  arm  draped  over  the  back  of  it  as  he  looked  up  at  bucky.  he  nodded  his  head  as  a  proud  smile  slowly  adorned  his  sculpted  features  and  he  didn't  try  to  hide  it  despite  knowing  that  bucky  probably  wouldn't  like  it.  ❝  you're  doing  great,  buck.  ❞  he  kept  his  voice  soft  so  that  it  didn't  convey  too  much  emotion,  not  wanting  to  scare  his  best  friend  off.  ❝  i...  i'm  proud  of  everything  you've  done.  ❞

 ⍟   𝙰  𝙷𝙰𝙻𝙵  𝚂𝙼𝙸𝙻𝙴  𝚂𝙻𝙾𝚆𝙻𝚈  spread  across  steve's  sculpted  features  as  he  looked  down  in  an  attempt  to  hide  it,  praying  to  whatever  god  was  listening  that  he  wasn't  blushing.  there  was  always  something  about  natasha  that  made  him  feel  like  a  teenage  boy  and  he  tried  so  hard  not  to  let  it  show.  he  was  captain  america,  for  crying  out  loud.

   ❝  thanks,  nat.  ❞  his  voice  came  out  with  more  gravel  than  usual  since  he  was  speaking  quietly,  baby  blue  eyes  meeting  the  woman's  as  he  lifted  his  head.  ❝  your  hair  suits  you  no  matter  what  you  do  to  it.  ❞  he  paused  as  his  smile  grew  and  he  let  out  a  chuckle,  shaking  his  head.  ❝  except  the  blonde.  wasn't  the  biggest  fan  of  that.  ❞

 ⍟   𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚅𝙴  𝙲𝙾𝚄𝙻𝙳𝙽'𝚃  𝙷𝙴𝙻𝙿  𝙱𝚄𝚃  roll  his  eyes  at  bucky  and  he  shook  his  head,  a  humourless  chuckle  leaving  his  throat  as  he  leaned  against  the  wall.  ❝  you've  known  me  for  nearly  a  century,  buck.  you  really  think  a  locked  door  is  gonna  stop  me?  ❞

 ⍟   𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚅𝙴  𝚃𝚁𝙸𝙴𝙳  𝚃𝙾  𝙷𝙸𝙳𝙴  the  frown  that  adorned  his  sculpted  features,  his  hand  coming  up  to  rub  at  his  jawline  as  he  pushed  the  negativity  out  of  his  system.  it  was  something  he  never  voiced,  something  that  remained  hidden  underneath  the  captain  america  persona  that  he  tried  so  hard  to  keep  up.  he'd  felt  lost  for  a  time,  bucky  had  been  lost  for  decades  but  they  were  found  now  for  the  most  part.

   tilting  his  head  to  the  side,  the  super  soldier  cleared  his  throat  and  rolled  his  shoulders  back  as  he  tried  his  best  to  slip  the  mask  he  always  wore  back  into  place.  ❝  you're  right...  the  path  is  just  harder  to  find  again  when  you  lose  it  so  many  times.  ❞

 ⍟   𝚃𝙷𝙰𝚃  𝙼𝙰𝙳𝙴  𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚅𝙴  𝙿𝙰𝚄𝚂𝙴.  it  was  something  the  super  soldier  had  never  thought  about,  not  even  as  the  ❛  hero  ❜  the  world  had  proclaimed  captain  america  to  be.  he  folded  his  arms  over  his  broad  chest  and  lowered  his  head  for  a  moment,  very  obviously  thinking  about  what  oliver  had  said.  he  tried  his  best  not  to  get  too  philosophical  with  his  thinking  most  of  the  time  because  that  tended  to  lead  him  down  very  dark  paths  that  he  didn't  like  to  ever  venture  down.

   straightening  up,  steve  took  a  moment  to  speak  before  his  voice  finally  came  out.  it  was  a  little  rougher  than  usual,  thickened  with  emotion.  ❝  i  was  happy...  for  awhile.  clint,  he's  happy  for  the  most  part.  everyone  finds  happiness  in  different  ways,  kid.  you  can't  just  write  all  the  ❛  heroes  ❜  off  with  one  sentence.  ❞

 ⍟   𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝙱𝙻𝙾𝙽𝙳  𝙷𝙰𝙸𝚁𝙴𝙳  𝚂𝚄𝙿𝙴𝚁  𝚂𝙾𝙻𝙳𝙸𝙴𝚁  resisted  the  urge  to  shake  his  head,  breathing  out  a  sigh  through  his  nose  in  an  attempt  to  make  sure  stiles  didn't  notice.  he  didn't  want  to  put  the  younger  male  off  of  what  he  was  going  to  do  but  he  also  didn't  want  to  end  up  having  to  worry  about  him  amongst  other  things  if  he  came  on  a  mission.  placing  a  large  hand  on  the  dark  haired  man's  shoulder,  he  looked  down  at  him  with  what  he  hoped  was  a  kind  smile.  ❝  look,  kid.  if  you  don't  think  you  can  do  it,  that's  fine.  its  not  for  everyone.  ❞  he  patted  stiles'  shoulder  before  removing  his  hand  and  taking  a  step  back.  ❝  i'm  sure  your  dad  could  find  you  something  to  do  around  the  compound  instead.  ❞

 ⍟   𝙰  𝙷𝙰𝙽𝙳  𝚂𝙷𝙾𝚃  𝙾𝚄𝚃  before  steve  meant  to,  taking  ahold  of  bucky's  human  arm  and  attempting  to  stop  him  from  walking  away.  he  didn't  apply  the  strength  the  serum  had  given  him,  hoping  that  just  the  gesture  of  him  trying  to  stop  his  best  friend  would  be  enough.  ❝  buck…  ❞  his  voice  was  softer  than  usual,  his  eyes  holding  an  almost  century  old  sadness  as  he  struggled  to  find  words.  hearing  those  words  from  bucky  felt  like  a  bullet  straight  to  the  heart  that  was  very  much  not  frozen  despite  the  ice  he'd  been  in  for  decades.

   ❝  you  don't  have  to  do  anything,  bucky.  you  can  stay  right  here  and  the  world  will  keep  turning.  ❞  he  paused,  releasing  the  dark  haired  man's  arm  so  he  could  clasp  his  own  hands  behind  his  back  and  hide  the  nervous  habit  of  cracking  his  knuckles  he'd  developed  since  being  thawed.  ❝  the  beauty  of  freedom  is  not  having  to  do  anything  you  don't  want  to.  sure,  we  save  the  world  for  a  living  but  that  doesn't  mean  we  can't  say  no.  if  it's  too  much,  i…  i  can  handle  it.  ❞

 ⍟   𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚌𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐  𝚘𝚞𝚝  𝚊  𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚟𝚎  hand,  steve  rested  it  on  natasha's  shoulder  and  breathed  out  a  deep  sigh.  he  allowed  his  hand  to  stay  there  for  a  long  moment  before  pulling  it  away  but  not  before  rubbing  his  thumb  in  a  circle  that  he  hoped  was  comforting  and  not  creepy.  that  was  the  last  thing  he  wanted  to  be.  ❝  nat…  ❞  he  started  as  he  shoved  his  hands  into  the  pockets  of  his  jeans.  (  god,  he  was  never  going  to  get  used  to  those.  )  ❝  just  because  you  aren't  a  hero  in  the  same  sense  that  people  think  i  am  doesn't  make  you  any  less  of  one.  the  things  you've  done  for  the  world…  you  should  be  proud  of  yourself,  you  know  that?  i…  ❞  he  paused,  swallowing  hard  as  he  tried  his  best  not  to  sound  condescending.  ❝  i'm  proud  of  you.  ❞

 ⍟   𝚋𝚛𝚘𝚠𝚜  𝚏𝚞𝚛𝚛𝚘𝚠𝚎𝚍  𝚊𝚜  𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚟𝚎  turned  his  head  to  look  at  bucky,  head  slightly  tilted  to  the  side.  he  was  used  to  being  the  one  spouting  out  wise  words  but  hearing  that  from  his  best  friend  seemed  to  hit  him  quite  hard.  he  found  himself  lost  for  words  for  a  moment  and  he  let  out  a  soft  hum  of  acknowledgement,  bringing  his  cup  of  black  coffee  to  his  lips  to  take  a  sip  while  he  pondered.

     setting  the  mug  back  on  the  table  in  front  of  him,  the  super  soldier  nodded  his  head  before  his  voice  finally  managed  to  make  it  out  of  his  throat.  ❝  i  think  you  and  me  are  a  testament  to  that,  buck.  we're  free  and  we're  choosing  to  use  what  was  done  to  us  for  good.  that's  gotta  count  for  something…  ❞
