YAY! I made him a few days ago, i was going to give him a cleaner ref but I feel like this is already readable enough and I got lazy.
Thoughts before going in
I kind of made him as like,, a reflection of Draxum. I wanted them to be similar in the sense that despite everything, they still ended up very similar to each other and where they got in life. They are both equally important to the lives on the turtles and their stories.
Splinter, in the present time, is a man who strives to provide the best for his boys despite their circumstances. Life has not been kind to him, both before and after his mutation, yet he continues to live with the thought that even with everything he has experienced, it cannot dim his hope for a brighter future.
Splinter tries to be a healthy mix of father and sensei. He believes his children to be very bright and talented in their own ways. In many ways, he sees bits of himself in them, both positive and negative, and he wants nothing more than to see them thrive. Despite his hopes, he is deeply afraid of failing his sons. He has experienced what it felt like for the adults in his life to fail him, he doesn't want to repeat that for his own children.
Splinter's strength is his love. No matter his worries or fears, his love will always win out. He cares very deeply for his family, and once for his friend, and he will do anything to ensure his family's happiness and comfort, even if it means he sacrifices his own teachings and comfort to do so.
Hamato Yoshi (Splinter) is both proud and afraid of being a Hamato. He loves the ancient stories of brave warriors, as well as how far his heritage goes back, but also fears the current practices. In some ways, he resents that side of the Hamato name.
The clan has a similar story to rise Splinter, where they must sacrifice themselves to keep The Shredder away. When this sacrifice came to the responsibility of his mother, his perspective of the Hamato name changed for him. He keeps his old stories close to his heart, but he could never understand the meaning behind sacrificing themselves.
("I suppose I never really understood how a mother could leave her child and then tell him that in the future, he must do that same.")
This causes him to distance himself from his clan for a while, and eventually leave to America when he was 20. In New York, he worked as a martial arts instructor for some time, as he wasn't really sure where he wanted his life to go yet, and that's when he met Draxum.
Draxum, while a bit odd (and still human disguised at this point), was the first real friend Yoshi made since moving. They built a very close mutual bond, close enough to where Yoshi could see them being friends for the rest of his life. But that bond was betrayed when Draxum revealed himself to be Yokai and took Yoshi prisoner for his experiments.
The turtles are mutated, as is Yoshi, the lab explodes, a turtle is lost in the rubble, and Yoshi returns to the human surface with only three sons.
Both the betrayal from his close friend and the loss of one of his children put him in a very dark mental state after his initial mutation. However, focuses on his surviving children and figuring out how to live now that he was different helped him focus on bettering himself and distracting him from falling completely into depression. Despite this, he still holds onto the lost life of his son, and shares the very few memories he had with him with his other children.
I wanted him to mirror Draxum in his design, so he has a similar face scar, as well as a shared color palette with his clothes.
Leg scar. This is from the initial lab explosion, same with his face scar. It is his reason for using a cane, as he was never able to get professional physical therapy to help his leg when it was healing.
Fur color. He was mutated with a domesticated rat! Draxum had it as an optional thing as he never intended to mutate Splinter, but accidents happen I suppose.
Earring. His little piece of Donatello.
He is a lover of soap operas. At first, he watched them because he wasn't sure what else to watch, but now he finds enjoyment in all the absurdity.
As a rat, he has never hated cheese more. The rat loving cheese stereotype has done damage to his psyche.
He knows of all his son's secret interests, and very subtly tries to encourage them. A few space books for Leo, or plant seeds to Raph, or new cooking utensils for Mikey.
hi sorry Splinter was the hardest to think of and design,, I wasn't really sure how to write him ..
