Tw: death
-----
Peter died yesterday. He went on a mission with the team, and it... didn't go well for him. He got really hurt, but managed to hide it until the threat was neutralized and they got back to the tower. It wasn't until then that he collapsed.
Now, the place seems... hollow. There are cold spots and drafts that are especially noticeable in the penthouse. Peter's bedroom door is half-open, and part of the large window is fogged up, as if someone is breathing on it even though there's no one there. There's a heavy sound of footsteps, a steady pacing pattern back and forth.
-----
An older man sat next to Peter, checking his watch, before turning to him.
“Peter. You seem… sad. Angry. Do you know why?”
@smarterthantonystark
Peter glances at the man, then huffs slightly. "Because I'm dead and my family can't see me and they're sad and I can't comfort them."
“Precisely the problem with most spirits. Now, I’m here for a reason not all that much different from that…”
Peter blinks at him, confused. "...What's the reason?"
“I’m here to offer you a choice. You can stay on Earth, as a spirit, and slowly lose all of yourself the hope that you can comfort those who miss you. Or… you can come with me. Truly pass on. You don’t lose humanity. You don’t become an angry spirit to be tortured for eternity, or until a hunter finally destroys your spirit, and you have a chance to see your friends when they also pass.”
Peter swallows. "I... I can't comfort them. I tried. They can't see me, they can't hear me, I can't touch them. There's— there's no point in trying anymore." He frowns slightly. "I... I don't want to be angry. And they'll come, too? Later?"
“If they choose to. I am not in control of their choice, but… I have a feeling they’ll come with when it’s their time too.”
"...You do?" He glances at the man. "Who are you?"
The man paused.
“I am Death.”
Peter pauses for a moment, then blinks, setting his jaw. "That... makes sense." He glances at him. "...You don't look how I expected you to. I mean, I know that should be the last thing I'm thinking about, but— yeah."
“I take many forms. I could be an anthropomorphic wolf. I could be a skeleton in a cloak. Or… I take this form. And I rather like the look of a man in a suit. Blends in.”
“I still like to think I am better than you despite the fact we follow each other’s heels quite a bit. I might not be the War you know, but I am A War.”
~War/Cillian (@impulsive-spitfire)
“I do think you are quite mistaken. You can cure pestilence. You can feed the hungry. You can stop a war. But as long as there is life… there is Death.”
“Tut tut. Who is the one that is the embodiment of civil unrest and war? Me. And what do those things bring? Death. Dying. Pain. So, in short, I do feed you.” Cillian rolled her eyes.
“When a war is over, another one pops up. There will always be revolution. Peace is futile. The entropy can never be reversed.”
“But, likewise. How many wars in history have been caused by death? Too many. And life without war is peace. Life without death is torture. You forget your place, little sibling. You were created with the first creatures as a byproduct of God. I am as old as God, maybe older. And I will reap him too, one day. Him, you, our siblings.”
Death scoffs.
“A war is only known by the death it causes. You are only as known as you are because of my domain. You seem to have forgotten that.”
“Two sides of the same coin, huh? I do not forget my place. I know where it is. It is among those who are above the punishment of death. I’ve been here for a long while, even if my counterpart is a teenage girl.” She smiled slightly.
“But you cannot reap what you need. You need me. You need me or else the world falls into disarray. We exist for a reason. Apocalypse is the survival of the fittest. The washing of the weak.”
“You were always the rowdy one.”
“Is that how you view me? Simply as the rowdy one? You try to command me when I have been commanding people all my life. I always get reminded that you are the insufferable one.”
“Your death tried to command you. Your death also actively kills. The Reapers do the killing. I simply… deliver the souls. I do not command my brothers, nor do I command you.”
“Ugh.” She sighed. “Yeah, yeah. There is Lady Death and then the Horseman of Death. Two different things. I have seen Lady Death, and she annoys me just as much.”
“You confuse your world for mine, Cillian.” Death pauses.
“I have no gender or sex, I simply possess a male host. And I am the only true death. There may be monsters claiming to be gods of death, but they have little more power over death than any other person. They act more as slightly higher priests, in most cases.”
“There is a simple explanation for this confusion. I wasn’t walking about you. Lady Death appears as a female. She is who reaps souls. The Horseman of Death, who mostly inhabits a male host, is the embodiment of all there is and ever was. Similar to how I am the embodiment of all wars and civil unrest.” She snorted.
“I inhabit a female host, who is very much alive thanks to me. Separation would lead to demise.”
“I see… in my universe the other three Horsemen are simply locked away, and I am left as the Reapers manager, of sorts. The Lady of Death does not exist, her role is fulfilled by the Reapers and by me.”
He turned to Cillian.
“And I inhabited my host upon his death. As I delivered him, I asked if I could use his body as my vessel. Separation means… almost 16 years of decomposition would happen in seconds.”
“All of our hosts had to die before we could inhabit and reanimate them. Our psyches are tied. We did not ask. We simply did. They had to learn to tolerate us, no matter how much the hate grew. Conflicts of interest will always arise, but none of us are saints. Not even our hosts. Half the time, our hosts are unaware of the damage we cause. I personally force mine into a slumber so she does not become a nuisance.”
She shrugged. “Differences between universes can be quite intriguing, but the core is still there.”
“Quite. It’s what makes differing universes so interesting.”
“I suppose both of our worlds are a mess, however, I think mine is messier than where you come from. I prefer an organized mess to a random one, but that should be an obvious statement.”
"Where I come from, however. I can be chained by any. Whether that be the whiny brat Lucifer or the insolent bacteria that is Dean Winchester."
“You could be tied to the daughter of two powerful mutants part of the X-Men. That is our equivalent of, let us say, the group who prevents doomsday. I am forced to be on the side for good instead of being a neutral entity.”
“I am not forced to be on any side. I simply remain neutral. Truly neutral. Although I assume the Winchesters do have a good way of making me do things.”

Now, that's an objective question. Ask a doctor and they'll tell you coming back from the dead once is a damn miracle. Ask a hunter and they'll tell you it's just something that happens from time to time.
Wouldn't reccomend trying it, Death is a real asshat when it comes to surviving death. Trust me.
@vesperstolethepassword
You cannot technically die. I would know this.
𝑢ℎ ℎ𝑢ℎ, 𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒. 𝐼'𝑚 willin𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡.
You can die and come back, or you were never dead in the first place. There was a comedy scene I remember that outlines this perfectly... what was it? Oh, yes.
A very short and simple open starter. :)
Lately, Ada’s career has been slowing down. After a lifetime of clawing her way up to the top no matter how ugly, she had finally realized just how much time she wasted doing so.
She’s stopped taking most simple contracts, instead opting to take riskier, high-paying ones so they would become less frequent.
This leaves her with a lot of free time— and it certainly isn’t something she’s used to. She rarely had the time to stop and think before, and now she has the time for… anything, really. She doesn’t know how to spend it.
It’s how she finds herself on the rooftop of this apartment building, leaning over the railing. Her nose is pink from the cold night air, the lower third of her face and her hands disappearing into her maroon turtleneck sweater.
So much of her youth was wasted away, and now that she has an opportunity to do… well, anything…
She has absolutely no idea what to do with herself.
She feels ridiculous, and she’s glad she’s alone so that no one else is able to see her like this.
At least, she was alone— up until she heard the echo of someone’s footsteps coming up the stairwell.
Ada doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t even look back. She just stays leaned over the railing, lost in her own head.
Ada heard the slow, hollow thud of footsteps muted by dress shoes, along with the inescapable click of a cane. A tall, thin man stood beside Ada.
“The view is beautiful to you, correct?”
He was old. His face was sharp, and long, and sipping on a cup of soda.
He stood in silence for a minute.
“You are instrumental in so many deaths. Do you ever wonder who will be instrumental in your own? Because it is not who you expect.”
Ada hums in response. The view is beautiful. She’s never really been able to admire the lights of a cityscape without also simultaneously fighting for her life.
She only glances at him when he stands directly beside her. Then, she becomes very skeptical.
Men dressed like this have never meant anything good for her. Something about him, in particular, feels especially… dark.
After his statement, she inhales. Deeply. And she lets out a long, slow, tired sigh. He knows too much about her, he’s speaking too cryptically, and his shoes are just too nice, and she’s now expecting him to pull a contract out of thin air and ask her to steal a government secret.
Regardless, she responds. Even if this situation is what she thinks it is, there’s no point in silence.
“No,” she answers simply. “I don’t care how I die.”
She steps back from the railing, crossing her arms.
“But I do care when.”
“You have both more and less time than you think, Ada. If that is the name you use now.”
He inhales.
“And no, I’m not giving a contract. I have no need for secrets, I was just checking in on one of my favorite unofficial helpers.”
His eyes flick to Ada’s face. He doesn’t even look at the rest of her, which feels deeply wrong to her. Not even a once over.
“They say the eyes are windows to the soul. I’ve found that there’s also a door to the soul in every part of the face, and yet, despite the myriad of ways the soul can be accessible… humans always are trying to take it out artificially. You have mastered this.”
He paused again. The silence wasn’t just quiet. The entire large, open balcony felt claustrophobic. It was like all of the world went still around this man.
“I have a proposal for you. A deal, maybe. You are a machine of death in this life, and in many others.”
He turned fully to face Ada, and she couldn’t help but feel a shiver down her spine as his full gaze fell upon her.
“Would you consider, in the next life, becoming a… second in command for the Reapers?”
Ada quirks a brow. He knows exactly what she’s thinking before she says anything out loud.
That frightens her. Because nobody can do that.
The steady gaze he holds on her face alone is deeply unsettling. She stares right back at him regardless— but the discomfort inside is practically screaming at her to just turn around and leave this place.
At his statement about souls, and windows, and doors, and how she’s mastered this and that, Ada looks off to the side.
“If every inch of the face is a door, then you’re standing on the porch talking instead of coming to your point.”
She stands, brows furrowed, arms crossed. Without even noticing it, she’s tensing up— almost as if it’s an attempt to make herself smaller, caving in on herself under the pressure of the man’s presence.
His proposal makes her cock a brow, hip popping to the side. She’s become very fed up with this… whatever this is. Deep down, she’s beginning to understand what’s happening— but her denial comes in the form of a sour attitude.
“You know, most recruiters lead with the salary before they start talking about the next life,” she huffs.
“The Reapers sounds a little theatrical, don’t you think? It sounds less like an intelligence agency and more like a heavy metal band.”
She shakes her head.
“I prefer being an independent contractor. Less paperwork, and fewer people in my ear telling me where to be and who to shoot.”
“We do not handle intelligence. And your salary is not in currency. It means you can stay with your little friend, Ethan, if I remember correctly, which I always do, for as long as he is alive.”
He tilts his head.
“You’re worried about how much I know. Its normal. You see, Ada. I’m old. Very, very old. And with that age, I have grown very good at knowing people. I could just know what they think, but frankly, I needed a hobby.”
He turns his body back to the city, and momentary relief floods Ada’s body, before going back to the bone chilling fear this man emanates.
“You would be the one in charge of when to shoot. And not just for your own operations, if you choose to take them. For all operations, when I am busy. When I am not, you act independently. Completely separate from the others. You choose your jobs, and they are usually done within a day, even by our rookies. And yes, you do still have a penchant for rookies, people less engrained in your life.”
"... You really don't believe in easing people into a conversation, do you?"
For the first time in several minutes, her resting smug face falters. Not because of the offer, but because of one name. She recovers before the silence has a chance to betray her, though, folding her arms with practiced ease.
"You've been amusing yourself this entire time, talking in circles and dangling cryptic job offers." She scoffs, irritated. "I can tolerate the eccentric. But you don't get to use Ethan's name to make your point."
Her eyes linger on him for a moment, searching for the tell every liar has. She finds nothing.
"... And, for the record, Ethan isn't my anything. He's just... someone who's had enough of people trying to decide his future for him."
She sighs through her nose, pinching the bridge of it. Then her expression settles into something a little sharper.
"If you know as much as you claim, then you already know that dangling one person in front of me isn't enough. So stop speaking in riddles. What are the Reapers, and who are you?"
“I knew Ethan might not have had the intended effect, but you do feel for him. That much is true.”
He scoffs. “Maybe I was amusing myself. I do need entertainment. It does get rather boring, especially when people keep trying to leash me.”
The man then turns his head just enough to face her. “Forgive my manners. I never properly introduced myself. The Reapers are my subordinates. And I… I am Death.”
She ignores his first remark. It's true, like everything else he's said. There's no point in trying to deflect anymore. At his introduction, though, she just... blinks.
"... Death." She lets the word— the name— hang between them. "You realize that's an extraordinary thing to ask someone to believe."
She gestures vaguely between them.
"People have claimed to be gods before. Prophets. Saviors. Visionaries. Usually right before they ask me to join a cult."
Her eyes search his face again, looking for a crack in performance. Still, nothing but... cold, and discomfort.
She rubs a hand across her forehead with an exhausted sigh.
"Fine. Let's pretend I believe you."
Her expression hardens.
"You said I'd be able to stay with Ethan. What does that actually mean? Does he die and I don't? Do I stop aging? Does he know what I've become?"
Her gaze doesn't leave his.
"And if— when he dies, do I lose him anyway?"
“It can be quite a shock, yes. They usually envision a big hood and an oversized scythe, when the suit and the concealable sickle work even better. And, while he may not know exactly what happens if you tell him, he may still pick up on it.”
Death sighs.
“You will live out the rest of your natural life, and because of this deal, you will have three options to choose from instead of two. One is to stay on earth as a spirit, one is to go with me to your final home, or accept the position.”
He breathes in.
“And if, or when, maybe, Ethan dies… if you take the job and die before him… you can take him to his final home yourself. Regardless of whoever dies first, if you take the job, you can visit him whenever. If you do not, there is a chance you two end up in different places forever, with only occasional visits.”
"...You're telling me I could lose him forever." The words are quieter than she'd intended. She looks away toward the city, jaw tightening.
"And you're also telling me I could make sure that never happens."
Silence lingers before she looks back at him.
"I've spent my entire life watching people hide the cost until it's too late." Her brow lifts. "So what's yours? No one offers eternity, free will, and the chance to keep the person you..."
She catches herself, exhaling softly.
"...the person you care about, without expecting something in return."
Her gaze hardens.
"What aren't you telling me?"
“Well. Since you seem adamant. If you choose to be with Ethan forever… you must be the one to deliver him. Which means… you must be the one to kill him.”
Death sighed, and he looked out at the view.
“Other than that, I’m an open book. You become Death. Simple as that. You do not choose when people die, or where they go, but you can choose if it’s you who brings them there.”
"psst...dean?"
@mothiebean
“Yes, Jax?”
"Do you have a blade I can borrow?"
“What for?”
"No reason.."
“I need to know what you need it for to give you the right blade.”
"Hunting."
“Hunting… what? A demon? A vampire nest?”
"Pig."
“… you’re hunting… a pig?”
"I need the knife."
Dean raises his gun. A revolv
“You aren’t still under the Goblin’s control, right?”
She looks at the gun and her eyes flash green. "I just need it...I'll give it back."
The revolver glinted in the light, and his eyes went pure blue, before he disappeared from Jax’s view.
She sighs. "You don't understand, Dean! I need a knife."
“What you need is a proper introduction to a good friend of mine. His name is Death.”
Suddenly, Jax finds herself in a large white room, with a tall thin man facing away from her in a chair.
"Dean!I need that knife!" She ignores the man in the chair, mumbling to herself.
“I believe you won’t be talking to Dean.”
His voice was cold, and calculating. His sheer visage struck primal fear into the part of Jax controlled by the Goblin.
A lump forms in her throat. She shifts uncomfortably. "I need the knife Sir..."
“You won’t be getting it, nor will you get anything until you leave the poor little meatsuit alone. Or I will reap the both of you.”
He spoke so clearly. So simply.
“Leave her. Or die.”
"He needs to die for what he did! I'll finish what I have to do and then... I'll leave."
“Who, Dean? Well, you have one thing wrong. You assume-“ Death took a sip from a McDonalds cup. “-that you have power. At all. Not even Jax’s power works. You are just an insolent bacteria at the face of the one who will one day reap even God.”
"Wescott! Why don't you pay him a visit instead of me? He should've died a long time ago...i only need a little bit of courage so.. I took the serum. It makes me so much better! I don't care about anyone's feelings. Nobody can hurt me..."
“It’s not his time. And you don’t have me bound. Now… out.”
Death turned around to face Jax. Her body lifted into the air.
“Out. It may not be Wescott’s time… but it is your’s, Goblin.”

"A storm sounds real damn nice right about now.. But it ain't worth making Death more pissed at me than he already is."
"well isn't he kinda like... Pissed anyway? Plus he's got a soft corner for the Winchesters for some reason. Maybe he'd cut us some slack if they were the ones to do it?"
“Most likely, no. You all are a pain.”

"...Fair enough. ..How long were you watching us??"
"Five minutes."
"You know, sometimes you really do make me wonder just how often you watch me when I don't realize it."
"Generally, I don't. You're not very important to me."
"Let's try to keep it that way. I don't entirely appreciate being watched."
"And I don't like watching most of the time."
"Then we agree. Are you going to just stay here or what? Don't you got better things to do?"
“I suppose there is a peaceful protest happening in Tennessee. I’ll most likely be needed there.”
