That’s not a request, it’s an order. An order not given through my voice, but through my fingertips. Carried through the nerves nestled in your sensitive skin to your brain, which returns with a signal to your muscles:

Move!

Your brain doesn’t like the order. Without the need for conscious thought, it screams to your muscles to escape from my demanding fingertips. As they reflexively flinch, they encounter the padded leather cuffs designed to prevent just such a maneuver. And so your muscles are forced to report the bad news back to your brain:

The order must be obeyed.

By now, sensory signals are pouring into your brain. My fingers will not be ignored. And there’s only one more response that your brain has to these signals.
