A Dragon Age universe inspired story with minimal connections to main/core characters. I am currently working on it, just wanted to post the idea.
- Set in Thedas, specifically the Free Marches on the outskirts of Kirkwall.
- Follows a the journey of a Sten turned Tal-Vasoth during the Arishok’s attack on Kirkwall. While he agreed the people deserved better, he did not agree with using/arming those so clearly desperate for peace.
- He and some of his unit decided to defect, offering protection to those wishing to flee the city. This did not extend to the wealthier parts of Kirkwall, he agreed with corralling them. Those were the people’s who needed their eyes opened, not those who suffered to keep up the curtains.
- Group of survivors/refugees made up of elves, dwarves, and humans. Some were families, others simply wanted away from the madness. A handful of elderly and those with babes with them or on the way. One being a Dwarf named Serta, along with her husband Hormund.
- Some survivors die due to others of the Sten’s unit disapproving and attacking the defectors. This led to a few elderly dying, along with a child and a couple adults; one of which was Hormund.
- Serta pushes down her grief to aid in getting others out to a land, where survivors either settle or scatter. A few of the group stay, including the Dwarven woman and the Sten. The Qunari, or Tal-Vasoth now unsure of what to do with themselves. So they stay as protection for a growing farmstead.
- The Sten feels an obligation to help Serta the most, feeling responsible for the death of her husband and for her troubles. He expected her to be weak, to fall apart, but she proved him wrong.
- As months passed, the Sten grew to have great respect for the woman. She wasn’t afraid to call him out on his views she didn’t agree with, and happily showed him how to knit. A skill he insisted he didn’t need to know, but grew to enjoy greatly.
- Serta would give birth to a healthy baby girl named Arrneta, and the Sten couldn’t believe something so small could be alive and not instantly break in his arms. He had come after her delivery to check on her, only to see the tiniest baby he’d ever seen. He was terrified of her and refused to hold her without Serta continuing prodding him to do so.
- There was no romance, simply mutual respect and friendship. He had no intention of courting a woman who had just lost her husband, nor did he want to at all. He didn’t even know what he was anymore.
- Years pass and the Sten watches Arrneta grow. She can now walk and talk, yet still so impossibly small in his eyes. She once asked him if he had a word for future. “Meravas.” He’d say. “It means to move on, or to accept whatever is to come.” A word he didn’t expect the child to declare his name.
- Arrneta took to decorating all of his things with her own touch of glamor. Draws here, ribbons there; soon all of his things that were used constantly had been marked by her. Even his horns had ribbons on them from the girl’s insistence.
- Story continues with Meravas and Serta at the farmstead. Developing identity, kinships, relationships, and struggle of self.
