I may just be late to the party but I genuinely believe Mike Wheeler is awful at reading social cues and Will was easy to read (up until s3 I guess) because they understand each other so well, but then Will (canonically) starts hiding his sexuality and repressing them around Mike between seasons 2 and 3 so he can’t read him as well as he used to which is one of the reasons why they start to grow apart + Mike’s internalized homophobia also makes it hard for him to understand and articulate his own feelings so really he’s just growing away from his old self and Will in one swing
