i used to think therian and thespian were the same thing and honestly i don’t wanna associate myself with either of them
I’m a therian thespian and this is Really Embarrassing
a loose history of therianthropy and otherkin
If you’re a member of either of these communities, you should be a little familiar with the history of these ideas! here’s a tl;dr, with more specific ramblings beyond the cut:
In 1993 an online chatroom regarding werewolves turned into talk about personal identities relating to werewolves and other creatures. This chat eventually fell apart due to conflict and trolling. There’ve been many online otherkin/therianthrope communities since, but this was the first regarding therianthropy.
Originally: therianthropes = people who identified as earth creatures, and otherkin = people who identified as any other creatures or things. people were very critical of less “traditional” kintypes or theriotypes. mostly a spiritual identity.
Now: otherkin is an umbrella term for people with any sort of non-human identity. It is more accepted in the community nowadays to identify with more abstract concepts. much more common for it to be a sort of coping mechanism.
There tends to be a rift between new wave otherkin and more traditional otherkin and therianthropes. Traditional types are often very critical of newer otherkin.
In recent years the community has gotten much more visibility, which has resulted in otherkin being the butt of many jokes and harassment, moreso than in the past.
The otherkin community also has some independent roots from the therianthrope community, from a group of people who believed they were from the same tribe of elves in past lives, and from groups of people who identified as vampires on forums like vampirefreaks.
it’s really interesting looking back at this post I wrote almost two years ago, and how both the community and myself have evolved since! I feel like this more modern aspect of fictionkin that I’ve seen and discussed is almost an entirely different branch of otherkin.
people have taken the word “kinnie” and turned it into a semi-ironic self-identifier instead of an insult. i’ve always had a hard time understanding fictionkin, especially ppl who have a long list of kins. a way someone who ID’d that way described it to me as a way to understand yourself better, which helps me understand it in a way.
anyway, while I would probably word things differently now, I think the above is still worth a read!
Okay another thing about spirituality or whatever is I…really love Rabbi Heschel’s statement about spirituality:
“Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ….get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.”
Everything is incredible!!! Everything is phenomenal! Radical AMAZEMENT. …I like that. It challenges me when I need to have something other than depression brain talking.
Anything remotely exciting: happens
My therian ass: it is time to Animal Noise

I feel like talking about wanting to hunt small game and take off through the trees would make me seem like a big fucking edgelord, but canine-ness for me is not about kibble and colorful squeak toys. Aesthetic posts don’t really do anything for me either. Sure, there are some of them that are pretty, but none of them really evoke any emotions in me, except annoyance. I’d rather see posts about people’s experiences, but the closest I get to that are “im quiestioning if im kin w/ this.” and “all ur kintypes r valid~!”
I’m probably making an ass of myself, but the tags just aren’t doing it for me, and most of the forums I’m on aren’t active beyone introduction posts.
Have you tried kinmunity? Last I checked they had a pretty active userbase.
Those Dark Days Of Winter, I Guess...
I’m really beginning to get to the point where I just can’t stand winter.
I dread it’s coming.
Every year I joke to myself, “Oh, ha ha, it fall and it’s getting colder and that means more and deeper of all that silly ‘shifting’ stuff”, and then I fucking get there… In the dead of winter… And it’s not fucking funny anymore.
It’s awful, and it’s pain-staking, and it’s isolating, and it’s confusing, and it’s fucking lonely…
For bouts of minutes to hours, you try to isolate yourself, because you’re so over come by your animality that you’re either disoriented and terrified or are consumed by aggression and other emotions I cannot define in words and trying to control urges that are…less than acceptable.
In these bouts, most if not all humanity is gone for the moment. There aren’t hands anymore, just paws and claws with limited motion (say goodbye if you held a glass), the mouth: full of sharp hard teeth, but I guess the rest didn’t catch up with the rest of the bodymap’s changes because the mouth is too small for them, the feet: well, they’re paws too; (it’s uncomfortable in shoes), the tail, too, is there, as well as the ear, twitching, indicating my annoyance (little do they know, they’re annoyed by themselves partly).
In short, winter has been a trying time for me and is slowly wearing me down and making me hate everything.
The therianthropic experience is not always fun, and for myself in particular, it sometimes sucks ass, especially in the winter.
I used to get this so bad as a preteen/young teenager. I broke the screen of my window so I could stick my head outside to breathe the winter air.

OH FUCKIN, im still in the otherkin tag bc im an ass and procrastinating but somebody said THERIANS ARE ELITIST OTHERKIN
No, NOOOOO, buddy NO
how to set me off in a fucking SECOND.
No, you dingus, therianthropy and otherkin have two seperate definitions, but nobody fking knows that because nobody bothers researching these things anymore before they join the community.
I can understand where they would get the idea though, many people who still use the term therianthrope are more ~oldschool~ and critical of new wave otherkin.
also “date a kin”
whats up with that..

“kin aesthetics” and like tips for whatever-kin and all this other new wave otherkin stuff... like idk.
one was like “for wolfkin, put some salt on raw meat, cook it a bit, then eat it without utensils to connect to ur kintype.. you can do it with vegetarian meat too!!” like no tea no shade but come on. Like yeah I guess you could do that if you wanted to eat kind of like a predator but there’s much better ways to connect with your theriotype... and that ones like really obvious, its an unnecessary tip. like really? I haven’t thought of eating hot rare meat before? And also lmao be real that doesn’t really work with faux meat, it has a totally different consistency than raw/rare flesh. anyway its good intentioned but it just comes off as like relying on people on the internet to tell you how to live as your personal identity. like theres no internal efforts to figure out what you want and need in regards to an identity thats really internal and personal.
And the aesthetic shit just like... pisses me off. I mean theyre nice aesthetics and thats fine but being otherkin isn’t about fucking aesthetics. it especially pisses me off when its like “catkin aesthetics uwu” and its a sweater that says “im a cat,” a cute little collar-esque choker, and handwarmers with paws on them. thats not even... i dont.... thats not what a fucking cat would.... *throws hands up in air* AUGH NEVER MIND w/e
I don’t want to be a gatekeeper, i think its cool these folks want to explore their identities in this way. its just frustrating I guess that it feels like they co-opted this community and made it into something else. Things change, i know, but I just wish this change had like... branched off into something new rather than changing the meaning of groups that have been around for ~25 years now.
I sincerely hope this otherkin fad dies out quickly. We can’t wholly progress as a species with hordes of mentally ill people thinking they are something other than human. *Don’t bother reblogging to start arguments with me, you can’t change my opinion and it’s a waste of your energy :)*
otherkin 'fad' started in the early nineties, I think? maybe earlier than that? Either way, the term was first coined in early chatroom/forum settings. Point is that this isn't a pop up fad, it's been going on for decades.
FUCKIN WEEBS. GOD I wish I saw the real post and not a SS. I like to look at cancer :^///
is anyone gonna tell.... nah fuck it not even worth it
i’m so sick of “x-kin aesthetic” posts, I just saw one for foxkin with pictures of foxglove in it like lmao literally the only correlation is the name...
don’t get me wrong, do what makes you happy. dressing up as a certain animal “aesthetic” sounds cool, but that’s not what therianthropy is, and I wish there was more room on tumblr for people who identify more with actual creatures rather than the idea of them. Or rather, I wish there was more distinction between animal aesthetics and thought out rational therianthropy.
Otherkin: *has an established community built on the concepts of intense introspection and questioning one's experiences*
Tumblr: hey that sounds fun
Tumblr: *says they're part of the otherkin community*
Tumblr: *does no introspection whatsoever*
Tumblr: *figuratively defecates on long-standing terms and definitions*
Otherkin: Actually what being otherkin means is-
Tumblr: DON'T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE
Tumblr: Make sure you respect everyone!! Appropriation is bad !!! uwu uwu
