Both of these students are here in my city alone. One of them is an international student, and the other, her parents just moved to another country.

I’ve been trying to be more than just a colleague to these students. One of the students and I connected immediately. I could tell that we had something in common, a parental loss, or something. We were both forced to parent ourselves, however you want to say it.

Yesterday, even though I was on a day off, I signed in to connect with her and check in after she’d been having conflict with one of our other colleagues who will be retiring in a month…

Anyway, the whole point of this post was, when you find those people who also can’t small talk, talk to them, make them feel seen.

I said to my friend I was channeling my old supervisor she said, no way, this is all you. You can’t teach someone compassion. You are just a kind person. And being vulnerable in a workplace allows me to use my privileges to create a safer space for others and that’s my entire goal.
