also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.

So I was thinking about this post that I made a lil while ago that some people liked and I was thinking on it harder as I do, and I’m not tagging this post because lowk I want to post it but I’m kind of fearing an “um akshually” response
I wasn’t sure if it was clear in this post, I don’t like Ollie’s Mum, and it’s mostly because of that line.
Ollie’s Mum was sick. She was ill, struggling and poor on an island. Then her son goes missing. I get that. It’s fucking horrid when your own body acts against you, when you live solely on kindness I get it.
But I just can’t get over that line from her.
What I meant truly in that post I think, whether I knew it at the time or not, was that I thought that was such a horrendous thing to say to Chip.
He sounds actually despondent when he agrees with her in that moment. You can feel the pain in his chest and how it makes him debate the way he leads his life.
But the fact remains that she couldn’t take that stance if it wasn’t for Chip. Wasn’t for all three of them. What would have happened to Ollie if they’d not taken care of him? If they’d let Marshall John be his protector? Where would Ollie be?
Forgive me for saying this, but I don’t think Lizzie would have protected Ollie the way Chip did, if Ollie had gone with John. Maybe Ollie wouldn’t have even made it there. John barely made it out of the B.L.O.C.K. iirc (it’s been a little while)
Ollie’s Mum only gets to appreciate the things she has because Chip brought him back to her. She’s understandably upset for her son being gone so long, but there is SO much of the story that she’s missing, and that she doesn’t want to hear.
She’s lived on the seas. She was married to a pirate. But the judgement in the way she treats Chip and Gill gets to me. She would not be able to choose the way of life that she talks about, that she seems to judge Chip for not choosing, if he chose to live that way.
I just don’t get how she can have lived that life and so easily turn on Chip for the ghosts that he’s chasing. She knows how rough it is to live as a pirate, but she doesn’t want to hear it when it comes to her son not being home. And I get it! Your son disappearing is fucking terrifying! But even after Chip apologises over and over, offers to leave Ollie’s life, gives them somewhere to stay, shows genuine care and interest, she’s still very dismissive and cold. Idk man.

anyway, for some clarification, I put the events of Iron Lung in 379 eic. its never specified in the film (or the game? not sure about that one) what year it is, so i made it 379 eic of rvarious timeline purposes that will be revealed later. Simon also told them this year in the previous page, if that wasn't clear. i just felt that he wouldnt mention it in the journal cuz like. he already knows the year, he's not gonna write it down.
Ilya calls it his Collection. Shane calls it Embarassing, Ilya, Come On.
Whether it's a TikTok, a blurry street pic, a keyboard-smash-filled tweet about Shane's shoulders in a tank top post-workout in the queue at a coffee shop, a Craigslist Missed Connections post, or, one time, a literal fucking newspaper clipping from the Ottawa Citizen newspaper's Classifieds section, Ilya wants every last instance of someone thirsting after his husband so bad they enlisted the help of the public to find him.
It doesn't actually irritate Shane, he establishes this early on and checks in occasionally just to be sure, so he feels free to go hog wild with it whenever it happens.
He posts a video stitching the TikTok of him sitting down next to Shane on the sofa and laying his head on his shoulder. Without mentioning that this is Shane Hollander, he just starts to list Shane Hollander's Cup wins, awards, accolades, career stats, some random off-ice skills (he can parallel park any vehicle on the planet and his paella would make you cry), and then ends by grabbing Shane's startled but amused face, saying, "This is the guy," kissing him playfully on the mouth, and finishing with, "He's mine. Fuck off."
He reposts the blurry street picture in a carousel along with several perfectly lined up selfies showing they're in the exact same spot. In all of them he is kissing a blushing (but smiling) Shane's cheek, and in the final one their wedding rings are held up in the foreground. Caption: "Mine mine mine."
He retweets the keyboard-smash tweet with a series of dual gym selfies showing off Shane's shoulders and arms and torso (and his own), and then a final one of them sipping coffee from the same shop together on a walk, holding hands. The tweet reads: "He benches more than I weigh, his grip strength literally cannot be measured by science, and he carried the lame fucking Metros to three Cup wins on those shoulders. #husbandgoals #lookdonttouchbitches #mine
He posts his own Missed Connection, looking for the only person in Ottawa who doesn't know who the fuck Shane Hollander is and who the fuck he's married to.
He takes out a full-page ad in the Citizen to gush about Shane (and technically to advertise the upcoming Ottawa hockey camps, yes fine Yuna) and the final line is, "To anyone who thinks they may be looking for him, I found him first. Haha, sorry not sorry."
It's after the last one that Jackie sends him an email that starts the biggest quest of his life.
The email's only contents are a screenshot of a tweet dated February of 2011, in Quebecois French. The translation is that the poster saw the cutest kinda-dorky-but-built guy in a Metros hoodie in what used to be Shane's old grocery store, and if hockey players looked like that than they might watch a game once in awhile. The subject line of the email just reads: "This used to happen like once a week, btw."
And so begins Ilya's internet campaign to find every last historical instance of Shane being thirsted after - and, with gleeful irony, he enthusiastically enlists the public's help in finding them.
Shane retweets his all-caps call for aid with a picture of Ilya beaming at his phone as the first ones start coming in. Caption: "Whatever makes him happy, I guess. ❤️ #alsomine"

So, I was working in a lab, right? My job in the lab was preparing a pure, concentrated enough sample of virus. This is tricky since, y'know, viruses require hosts to replicate, but you then need to get the host cells (and the pieces of the host cells that died!) out of the sample while still keeping the viruses. Once I'd finished and the samples had been sent to the database for analysis as well as a second one sent to be frozen for future reference, there was still some left over that needed to be disposed of.
I, knowing that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, waited carefully for the lab director to be deep in conversation with someone else on the other side of the laboratory. And then I took my chance.
Test tubes, as it turns out, are really bad as shot glasses. Their shape turns any liquid inside into a stream, so you really can't knock it back quickly - it takes a couple seconds. Additionally, the best way I can describe the taste of virus concentrate was "sterile rot". A very unique kind of bad! Made worse by the test tube's inefficiency as a shot glass.
(by the way we were studying bacteriophages, not animal viruses. these viruses are too specialized on attacking prokaryotes to even recognize our cells as targets at all, according to studies.)
(but also like. if the viruses managed to successfully switch hosts and killed me with a violent infection, itd still be worth it.)
