evelynn couldn't help the quiet laugh that escaped her at his immediate correction, shaking her head as she looked back toward the host circling overhead. "i think i'm still getting used to people looking at me before they hear what i'm actually saying," she admitted, a smile lingering at the corners of her mouth. "i'd rather my opinion matter because i've earned it than because of who i love." there was no discomfort in the admissionâonly honesty. "though i appreciate the sentiment." when he called himself an asshole, her expression warmed with amusement. "i'm not disputing that particular character assessment."
she watched another descent, her eyes following the subtle gaps that opened and closed through the formation. "i don't mean you've changed at your core," she said after a moment. "i mean you've come back carrying more than you left with." her gaze shifted to him, thoughtful rather than pitying. "experience changes the way people speak. the way they lead. the things they're willing to accept." she nodded toward the host. "they remember the general who left. they're standing in front of the one who returned. to you, those differences probably feel gradual. to them..." a small shrug. "they happened all at once."
her attention lifted skyward again as the ecosians banked into another circuit, noticeably tighter than before. "you're right to push them," evelynn said quietly. "peace has a habit of convincing people it's permanent, and that's when they stop preparing for the day it isn't." she folded her arms a little tighter against the breeze. "if valaria has taught me anything, it's that calm isn't the absence of danger. it's the opportunity to be ready before it arrives." a faint smile returned as she glanced back at him. "they may grumble every time you tell them 'again,' but one day they'll make that tighter turn without thinking. and on the day it matters most, they won't remember the complaint."
"I can respect that. There's always something more powerful in knowing that your words - people listening to you - comes from busting your ass to get where you are." Cael spoke with a voice that said he knew the feeling all too well. He had felt that same desire every minute of his life since entering that Ecosian campsite centuries ago. His entire life had been fighting to earn the right for his opinion to mean something.
"Wow." The male remarked with a fake offense. "You could at least pretend to be nice and tell me 'No, Caelius, you're not an asshole at all. We love you.'. That's messed up, Evelynn." Cael shook his head several times before laughing quietly. Rolling his eyes one final time at the flight above them, Cael waved a dismissive hand and turned to the young woman beside him; grabbing a skin of water from a nearby table and drinking deep from it.
"I'm sure Kaidan's tried to give you the grand tour of the Court already. But, he's boring and a stick in the mud - so why don't we prowl the town? Wherever you want to go - just consider me your bodyguard. Since, you know, I am." He smirked once more. "Let them repeat it over and over until they realize I'm not even here anymore."
