3 Steps Past Last Resort

“It hurts. Being like this.

And it’s not like any pain you can feel when you’re alive. It’s… it hurts to exist.

Then, against your infinitely better judgement, you become sort of close to your second-in-command, but you tell yourself it's okay because there will come a day when you all have to answer for the decisions you've made. Not necessarily to the world's governments, but to yourself, and maybe having someone else around that understands will be good. There's a bit of hope that one day, years into the future, you'll be able to sit down and talk about what you've done.

The launch is drawing nearer and nearer and suddenly you've lost two astronauts despite taking every precaution. You know what you have to do before the smoke has time to clear. In your heart you know that your second in command will understand because they're the only other one close to feeling the weight of every decision you've had to make. You know he'll make the right decision, so you give him the illusion of choice even though you (think) you both know there isn't a choice.

But then he doesn't make that decision and you have to do what you've always done and put the rest of humanity first. You have to deal with three things that day:

1. Sacrificing what you now, too late, recognize as a friend

2. Killing a man- a good man
