If you've interacted with anything having to do with Southwest indigenous cultures, I'm sure you've encountered the books. Winnetou is a book series from the 1880s and is an inaccurate depiction of both Navajo and Apache people. Neither cultures have chiefs (more of a Northern First Nations term) and somehow Winnetou is the chief... of both of them? And of all the bands in each tribe? Also, Winnetou is a name too similar to Winnemucca, a Northern Paiute Chief... and a name of Paiute origin.

I have known people living in the four corners area and... they get so many German tourists year-round. I have known too many Navajo people mixed with German ancestry. There is a small but growing fandom of Winnetou on TikTok TODAY, that seemingly believes drawing an inaccurate indigenous character based on a real-life culture is diverse enough.
