Mummified Barbies - each figure 12"x 2"x 2"
"The Mummified Barbies acknowledge Barbie as an icon, as idealized and exaggerated as any mythological depiction of Venus or Aphrodite. By concealing the attributes and accessories that characterize her image, I aim to locate Barbie in a long history of glamorized feminine figures. Wrapping and silencing this vivacious action figure into a phallic totem, we have a chance to see her more objectively. Mummifying and shrouding Barbie literally ties her to ancient and ongoing cultural practices of fetishizing the female form. âMummifyingâ Barbie has been a long-term project that plays with preserving her unearthly proportions by concealing them eternally."
"I hold the doll in one hand and wind a cord around and around the doll with the other. The trick is to maintain the right amount of tension to keep the cord from slipping off. It is a bit of a game. It always takes me multiple tries to get it right. To completely cover her body with string takes concentration and coordination. It is impossible to multi-task. While I am doing this I lose sense of time and gravity disappears. To âmummifyâ Barbie in this way is meditation."
