♡ ⸝⸝ art project gone wrong with dadjo ! ❤︎₊ ⊹

your five year old daughter loved to draw. at a very young age, she started vandalizing the walls of your home long before she could walk. it was no surprise when her love for art carried on into her early schooling years. the day she brought home an art project from school was the best day ever for her.
“it’s easy peasy. you paint a portrait of something you love, so i’m drawing mommy!” she beamed at you.
satoru frowned at this. “what about me? don’t you love me?” his heart broke a little at this. he knew that kids at this age usually favored their moms, but he didn’t need it to be rubbed in his face. his heart was too fragile to handle that.
“of course i do silly! i can’t put both of you, you’re too big to fit.” she said solemnly. you snorted and satoru glared at you from behind the canvas.
the little one pulled out her fancy magical art tools: her handy paint and paint brushes. wasting no time, she began to start with the outline of your face.
you held your position, not wanting to interfere with the artist’s creative process. as she worked, she stuck her tongue out in deep concentration, squinting her eyes as she glided the paintbrush across the canvas. satoru watched silently behind her, torn between being intrigued and upset.
"all done!" she turned the painting around to show you. you stared back at what seemed to be an attempt to paint you from memory. it was a blob with huge eyes, a wide smile, and long lashes. nonetheless, you fought the urge to laugh. you gasped and got up from your chair, pulling her into a tight hug.
"oh, i love it so much, thank you. you're so talented honey!" you swatted satoru, who was still sulking away. "tell her how talented she is 'toru."
he blinked before realizing what you'd asked him. "oh! uhhhh… so awesome sweetie, i love it so much." the last part of his sentence died in his throat, and that's when she knew.
her big blue eyes welled up with tears, threatening to fall on her chubby little cheeks. he hated it. he had to be lying to her to make her feel better.
"honey, what's wrong?" you asked her immediately. she shook her head and your heart sank.
"you're lying," she pointed an accusatory finger at satoru, who gasped in horror. "you hate my p-painting, you think it's ugly."
satoru's face turned red and he shook his head. "nuh uh! i love it..." he rubbed the back of his neck “…i just think you could paint me even better!" he said quickly. nice save, you thought to yourself. your husband was already in the doghouse enough with her, he didn’t need another incident added to his long list of offenses.
she perked up at this. "really?" she asked hopefully. satoru's heart broke once again, this time not out of petty jealously, but at how much his opinion mattered to her. it reminded him painfully of himself at that age—how he used to live off scraps of praise, shaping himself into whatever version people liked best. every compliment had felt like his oxygen back then, and every moment of disapproval like drowning. seeing that same fragile hope in her expression made something ache deep in his chest.
"yeah,” he replied. “you’re good already. scary good, actually. but if you keep practicing…” he tapped the edge of the canvas with one finger, “i think someday you’ll paint things people won’t ever forget.”
her cheeks turned pink and she giggled. "thank daddy!” she turned back to the canvas. “i guess i'll paint you too." she said unenthusiastically.
satoru chose to ignore her reluctant tone and grinned at her. "five bucks says my portrait will be better than mommy's!" he squeezed her shoilder.
"five bucks and a lolipop!" she countered. you shook your head. his sweet tooth really did pass onto her. you wondered where the gambling came from. maybe uncle toji?
they shook on it with a firm handshake, both dead serious. satoru took the seat across the table you had sat in and posed with a peace sign, tongue out and all.
"oh, and, make sure you really bring out the blue in my eyes, kay?"
