I have a lot of thoughts about the GWBG trailer, many are saying it’s about sapphic love and being closeted. while I think it can be that too, to me it feels more like an allegory about reconnecting and rediscovering your younger self. dreams & aspiration.

you always hear the term, “boys will be boys” as men are repeatedly enabled to remain childish and immature. you rarely hear it for girls. but why can’t girls be girls? I like to think having an existential crisis is part of the girlhood experience. and it’s a part that isn’t talked about enough.

ryujin’s heart isn’t beating, she isn’t feeling any emotions, she’s numb. “to feel is to be human” so she feels like an inflatable doll, living for the sake of living, an empty shell. the other girls try to get her heart beating again (exercise, delicious food, karaoke, scares) but it isn’t working, she’s slipping further in fact.

she finally deflates, and when she does she sees the toys that were hidden under the bed. probably beloved toys from when she was younger. she feels that spark again, that urge to dance, to run. when she leaves her house she’s surrounded by all these imaginary creatures, her friends join her in this dance, perhaps they were all inflatable dolls too.

notice the other girls also barely show much emotions in the trailer. (I know chaeryeong, lia and yeji did smile but it was mostly 😐) and when they dance together ryujin’s heart starts beating again, beating so hard it soars out of her chest.

in a world that is so so cruel to girls, letting ourselves be who we were when we didn’t have a care in the world (younger self/childhood) is so important. it’s something I strive yet struggle to achieve for myself. I believe that this is the message that they’re trying to push. for us girls to allow ourselves to be just girls. I resonate with this message so much and I’m so happy a topic like this is being explored, especially in the beautiful way that itzy has represented it in the trailer.
