Home Again

âYeah, I knew sheâd been promoted to Centurion. She deserves it.â Nico couldnât stop the hint of pride in his voice, not that he wanted to anyway. Hazel was the closest thing he had to a blood sister, and he was damn proud of her for everything sheâd managed to accomplish. One of the best things Nico ever did for anyone was save Hazel from the Fields of Asphodel. It was a risk, but heâd do it over and over again just to watch her flourish like she was.
âReyna needs to learn to take a break,â he said, rolling his eyes a bit. Heâd tried to teach her the value of a lazy day where all you do is read comics or play games, but she turned everything into a âlearning opportunityâ or a strategy exercise. He eventually got fed up and went to go hide out in his cabin.Â
Nico didnât say much about that. Things were rarely going well in his life. It wasnât up until a few months ago that he could even say that he enjoyed being alive. Before, he was just waiting for a time when he wouldnât be useful so he could slip away into the shadows, never to return. But between Will, Jason, Hazel, Reyna, Coach Hedge, and hell, even Percy and Annabeth, Nico was learning that living might not be the worst thing heâd ever done. At least when there were no monsters or vengeful gods trying to kill him.
He thought back to the day he accidentally became an ambassador for Hades. âWell,â he said around a mouthful of brownie, âthe first one they gave me was white. I just kind of looked at them and handed it back. I told them Iâd wear my own clothes. They said I couldnât, so I just went and found someone who would dye the toga for me.â He shrugged. âThey just kind of let me."Â
People did those kinds of things to him from time to time. Let him do things that maybe others wouldnât be able to do. All because they were scared of him. Nico hated it. Sure, he kind of liked that people thought he was intimidating enough to be scared of (especially given how short he still is), but he didnât want people to be scared of him all the time.Â
"Oh, no. Not the sad baby seal eyes. I could never subject you to those,â Nico deadpanned. Then he smirked. He was actually happy that Jason had given them to him and not to Percy.
Jason was about to respond when he heard âGrace! Where the hell are you hiding? I saw you arrive!â and he sighed. Not that he wanted to avoid the others, but he enjoyed talking to Nico so much, and there was rarely time just for the two of them anymore. But apparently their time had come to an end.Â
âSorry, I should go. Chironâs going to want my report, and I should start greeting everyone else before they mob us both up here.â He figured that would make Nico slip away faster than you could ay âstygian ironâ, so he wanted to give him the clear out before it even potentially became an issue. âBut, maybe Iâll see you at dinner?â
He still had a vivid memory of when Nico had first started living full time at the camp and he used to summon the powers of darkness to give credence to his story that he had a âmedical conditionâ that meant he couldnât sit at a table by himself at meals. Will had furthered the story by signing a âdoctorâs noteâ, and Chiron had rolled his eyes and gone with it. Jason wasnât quite that brave, but he enjoyed the times Nico sat with him, and sometimes he snuck over to one of the other tables anyway, using his liminal state to justify it.Â
The shouting began to get louder, so he turned away. âIâll be down in a minute! Hold your pegasi!â He turned back to Nico and grinned regretfully. âSorry. It was really great to talk to you again. Like, really.â
