'what do we yearn for and aim to provide' god. okay. he just spelled his entire deal out for all to see like an open bleeding wound and for the longest time we didn't even know it but alright I guess. whatever

(in addition to the art and the characters and all of the rest of it this is what sets the manga apart for me; it feels like the thematic core is so completely and solidly built, it's so coherent everywhere)

the way this whole part of the speech could be delivered directly at qifrey word for word and make perfect sense but you won't know it for another like sixty odd chapters. it is what he seeks and cannot be granted. it is something precious that was taken from him by magic. and a fUCKING tree is here about it as well.

it's a gentle happy spell... olruggio....... the sky's kindest most radiant star shines even in its absence, he doesn't even need to be on page to do his thing. mvp always. more narrative mirrors are here to party, as we see qifrey also being paralleled up against coco's mother in chapter 94, once we Know. and, for all I will go on to gleefully drag him about some stuff in the next part here, he casts for coco's mother a spell there meant to cause her comfort just like olruggio's spell was meant for him, even though he doesn't really believe it will work or that she can feel it.

what REALLY gets me here on the reread though is that qifrey knows immediately. he knows what's going to happen to the romonon gold people by using the amplification lens and he doesn't say shit fhskdfhasjh

despite the parallels being drawn here he doesn't even seem to have any particular sympathy for them, it's very much an 'oh no! anyway' vibe. Fs in chat or whatever ass reaction while coco and tetia are watching in teary horror. understandable in the context that they just threatened to chop up his kids and also he's bleeding out lol, but I wonder if on some level there's also a bit of 'yeah dumbasses if we could take a shortcut like that do you think I'd still be growing leaves out of my empty eye socket like some fucked up terrarium🙄' ennui in there. the fact that it's olruggio's spell -- forged from the hope that it would ease qifrey's life somehow, created with so much care to keep it from causing any harm at all, care qifrey implicitly recognizes -- makes it. so much tho. it isn't a matter of just amplifying the signal. qifrey knows olruggio can't just love him hard enough that it alone will fix this situation. if that could do it, it would have happened a long time ago already. it's the only reason qifrey's still alive, probably, but it won't get that tree out with the roots. the statues have been around suffering for long enough that simple cessation is a welcome relief, but qifrey is aiming higher; he wants to live. he has promised to live. and he's being a little bit quietly bitchy about it all which is why I love him so impossibly much
