Of all the things Everett expected his ex to say, âsorryâ was just about the last item on the list. He looked up sharply, but Beckham was already looking away; Everett couldnât see the expression from his angle. So he looked back at his own feet, where his toes dug into the damp sand, lips pressed tightly together. And for the first time since heâd found his ex on his island, he feltâŚsad. Back when theyâd broken up, at least he had his job and his friends and his life to distract him from the pain of losing his love, but here, he spent so much time alone with his own thoughts, and seeing Beck around almost every corner, it was like every emotion heâd stubbornly refused to acknowledge was bubbling up. How inconvenient. To think that if he hadnât come back this time, he might not have ever seen Beckham again. He wasnât sure how he felt about that prospect, either. Everett swallowed, sighing again. âMâsorry too,â he said, before he could think any more about what to say back. âIâŚsaid some stuff I shouldnâtâve. When you first got here.â Apologizing wasnât usually hard for him, having been brought up to be  gracious and apologize out of politeness, but this was different. Heâd never thought of himself as the one to blame for the way things had ended, even if he doubted being enough, but heâd definitely landed a few low blows, and no, that wasnât how he was raised. Even if Beckham was going to waltz off happily with a new baby or even two, they should be happy. âI have to go,â he said suddenly, standing up and brushing the sand from his legs. âIâI should go.â In other words, he might actually cry if he sat here any longer; Beckham had seen him cry before, but not like this. He hadnât cried when they separated and he definitely wasnât about to cry now in front of him.Â
THEIR CONVERSATION HAD taken a turn for which neither of them had explicitly prepared. Mutual apologies hadnât been on his mind when Rhett had first showed up at the beach -- hell, he couldnât even think of a single thing for the other to apologize for until he heard his elaboration. What Everett had said back when Beck arrived at the isle was unpleasant and stinging, yes, but itâs not like Beck didnât deserve it. Given the time to think about what heâd put his ex boyfriend through for the last few months of their relationship, it was a wonder theyâd slept together at all that first encounter. Beck wouldnât have been able to tolerate himself if heâd been in Rhettâs shoes. âSâalright,â he dismissed under his breath, glancing over at his former lover out of the corner of his eyes. âYou had every right to be angry with me.â He doesnât want to sound like a self pitying mascochist so he refrains from saying that he got what he deserves but when Rhett is making his abrupt excuse to leave, Beckhamâs gaze shot upwards and he reached out a hand on impulse. Fingers managed to snake around his exâs slim wrist, loosely keeping him in place with a gentle press of his thumb to the other maleâs pulse point. âPlease --,â he implored, eyes wide with an innocence and fear that only Everett had seen before. It was the same purity of expression heâd once had as a young teenager who had yet to see the hardships of the world, who had yet to experience disappointment, rejection, loss and loneliness. â -- Donât go. Not ... just, stay?â Rhett could pull out of the grip if he wished. Beckham wasnât about to force anything upon the person who had put up with the most from him. But all he knew was that he really didnât want to be alone right now and the only person who could understand even half the feelings suddenly swirling around in his chest was Rhett. His Rhett.
