What I wish someone had told me before university
1. You don't have to have everything figured out.
It's perfectly normal to change your mind. Many people switch majors, discover new interests, or realize that the path they imagined for themselves isn't the right one. University isn't only about finding answers—it's also about asking better questions.
2. Everyone feels lost at first.
The people who seem confident usually feel just as uncertain as everyone else. They're simply better at hiding it. Don't mistake confidence for certainty.
3. Your grades aren't your identity.
Work hard and do your best, but don't let a number determine your self-worth. University should help you grow as a person, not just as a student.
4. Asking for help is a strength.
Whether it's talking to a professor, joining a study group, or asking a classmate to explain something, nobody expects you to know everything. Learning has never been a solitary process.
5. You don't have to study all the time.
Some of your most valuable memories won't happen in a lecture hall. Spend time with your friends. Visit museums. Read books just because you want to. University is about living as much as it is about studying.
6. Comparison will steal your joy.
There will always be someone with better grades, prettier notes, or a more impressive résumé. Focus on your own progress instead of someone else's highlight reel.
7. It's okay to make mistakes.
You'll probably fail something at some point. You'll submit an assignment you're not proud of, forget a deadline, or completely misunderstand a lecture. It happens to everyone, and none of it defines your future.
8. Learn because you're curious.
The best moments at university often happen when you stop studying just for exams and start learning because something genuinely interests you.
9. Rest is productive too.
You don't have to earn a break. Sleep, hobbies, long walks, and afternoons spent doing nothing are part of a balanced student life—not obstacles to it.
One day, you'll leave your last lecture without realizing it's the last one. You'll stop carrying your notebooks everywhere. You'll miss wandering through the library, complaining about deadlines with friends, and discovering ideas that completely change the way you see the world.
University won't last forever.
So work hard, stay curious, and don't forget to enjoy the little moments in between.
