when i say “highly manufactured” i do not just mean the lyrics and choreography, i mean that every. step. in. the. process. is planned for, thought through, and approved, before it even sees the light of day; idols have 0 say in the creative process. songs always have a hook, “catchy” melody, a rap part (and this is especially ironic, since rap has its roots in authenticity, whereas the generic song structure and even idol group structure has all but destroyed that idea, but i digress), and even the groups themselves are made through systematic, calculated moves that disregards anything the idols say/feel, because they can and will do their utmost to get as much money out of these kids and young adults as possible.

So as an industry kpop thrives on what was essentially indentured servitude. The trainee would have to go to hell and back just to debut and bc the company invests a lot into their training they basically debut with tons of debt. It takes a long time for it to be paid off and for the idol themselves to even start making money.

The thing is tho that the kpop industry has such a strangle hold on music production in Korea that for any person who is talented and genuinely wants to pursue music they have no other choice than to essentially sign their soul away. Thankfully I think they did away with the “slave contracts” cuz they were so flagrantly abusive but it took a while to even get there! I still think idols could benefit of a union of some sort.

On the fan side of the equation though there are people endangering the lives of idols because they don’t even see them as humans. Since the companies promote the sexualization of their artists and there’s no one stopping it on the fandom side of things, we have people full on saying “I wanna ride his hard d*@%k!!” to an idol that is still a teenager. It’s disgusting but when you have companies selling people as essentially perfect products the consumer base will struggle to see them as humans.

kpop has been around since the 90s. It’s origins were more artistic but then the industry grew into a capitalistic monster. It’s influence has always been western and they’ve always been trying to break into western markets. Over the years they’ve slowly chipped away at it but no one got close. The rest of the world just didn’t like kpop. The thing that comforts me is that the band that broke through into world wide markets was BTS. They were a band who broke the mold of the industry bc the company they came from was small and gave them more freedom. Their music isn’t valid or devoid of meaning. What’s cool is that the group that is famous world wide and is the face of kpop is the group that is probably the least KPOP.

Hopefully the rest of the industry sees how BTS got famous without using the formula and abusing its artists and taking away freedom and they try to emulate that. I see BTS as a step in the right direction for the industry to change and become less demanding and disgusting.

I will say that while yes the industry is really fucked up different companies treat their artists differently and hell even groups under the company differently. For example, BigHit (Who manage BTS) for the faults have been really good with letting the guys write and compose their own things:

Even artists under SM entertienment (well known for taking a lot of control away from artists) have those who have made their own songs, such as Jonghyun, Taemin, And recently Chanyeol:

Also, yes a lot of kpop can seem vapid, but their are songs that talk about artists stuggles with mental health, Jonghyun has many songs which talked about his depression, Suga has also had songs which deal with the same topics, VIXX have had songs which talk about toxic relationships. And even with that said, whats wrong with songs that don’t have any deep meaning, music is meant to be fun and hell how many western songs do you know that don’t go in to deep topics but are still interesting/good ect. 

Kpop is problematic, the industry is awful, idols have said some fucked up shit, and the way that fandoms act about their idols is gross and unhuman. But kpop as a whole has been slowly taking a step in the right direction and now more then ever idols are talking about mental health, fans are taking a stand to inhumane treatment:

Look if you wanna hate kpop, hate kpop. If you find it gross, find it gross. But acting like its fully manifucted and there has been no group or idol to creater their own stuff is just plain wrong.

This isn’t having a short attention span (or well maybe thats part of it), but probably something called “Optimal Arousal.”(This is psychology, not anatomy, please keep your mind out of the gutter Xp)

Optimal Arousal goes like this: When effort is low, more stimulus is better. When effort is high, less stimulus is better.

I’ll elaborate. Whenever you do something easy (like maybe some homework as an example), unless something else is happening (like music or a show) you tend to get drawn away or doze off. In this homework scenario, the effort is low, so in order to keep at it and do well on working on it, you need a higher amount of stimulus, like a movie.

If something is hard, like for instance a test, you probably will try to avoid noise, going so far as to hush others so you can concentrate. The effort is high so you want less stimulus.
