ok, here's my two cents. twilight is a romance. by authorial intent & plot conventions & marketing, which is the reason 'genres' even exist in the first place, it's romance. it's got elements of horror, monsters and violence and some weirdly graphic body stuff with bella's pregnancy, but those are set dressing to the plot and characters and themes, which are a story about finding your one true love. even her vampires are, quite literally, defanged.
(like, twilight's kind of THE "YA paranormal romance" that created a genre to haunt teen sections of libraries for decades to come and arguably domino-d to romantasy. even though it wasn't the first one of those, it was certainly the one to popularize it!)
that said. because it's a romance. i get to read it as horror.
because the thing about romance fiction is, much like horror, it is a mirror of the culture in which it was written. horror reflects cultural anxieties, its monsters showing us who is the "other," the un-person. (maybe in the best horror, it questions the paradigms that create those monsters in the first place.)
and romance? romance shows us the ur-person. the one we should all aspire to, because THAT is the path to a happily ever after.
so, let's talk about bella swan. let's talk about a pretty, (but not too pretty--she wouldn't call herself that!), white teenage girl, who is quiet and hardworking and less shallow than all her peers who care about things like boys and makeup and dresses. she falls in love with a man who of course Wants to hurt her, but Chooses Not To, which is the best thing a man can do.
she marries him. she has a child with him (even though she thought she never wanted kids--she wants edward's child, because he is uniquely perfect for her so his child is uniquely perfect!), sealing them into an eternal nuclear family where they will always be young and wealthy and unchangingly, conventionally beautiful. and white. love literally makes them whiter.
this is, culturally, What We Should Want.
and to someone on the margins? being told to want that is horror in and of itself. because i know how false it is.
i look at bella swan, and instead of a dream, i see my high school loves now married to men, in the closet to this day, holding the door shut with both hands. i see my friends who were pregnant by eighteen, who never went to art school or finished that education degree or cut it at the big engineering school, despite all the scholarships, because somebody had to stay home with the broken-condom baby. i see my friends who detransitioned because it was easier, and i can't even resent them for no longer speaking to me--we buzzed our heads together for the first in the same bathroom sinks.
i see the horror of being frozen forever at eighteen, never to dye your hair or pierce your ears or get a tattoo or gain comfortable weight, to make your body yours--the horror of never getting to grow up! there is a reason it is a tragedy when someone dies at 18. there is so much potential never realized.
i see the horror of being trapped in a "family" who are the only real friends you will ever have because no one else is allowed in, because they don't know the truth you do. i see the horror of the simple fact of being married to a man! when all the wealth is his, all the decisions are his, and your entire social circle becomes his family and friends, just as a matter of course. when no matter how much he has hurt you, you are sure it was because he loved you. what happened to you? where did your identity and your beliefs go? what is horror if not that?
i am white, but i can certainly still see the horror in having your culture and community and ACTUAL LITERAL MELANIN IN YOUR SKIN stripped away because you exist in a world where it is ontologically true that being "perfected" means becoming white, and being anything else means all the worst stereotypes about you are true.
and even if you aren't on the margins--even if you are stephenie fucking meyer, an upper-middle class, white, heterosexual, cisgender, able-bodied Mormon woman writing this in the early aughts in the bad old US of A--
we all see the horror bleeding in. we see the bloody, painful, terrifying birth after the pregnancy that distorts bella's body in horrific ways. we see the cracks straining where all of the messy, real parts of motherhood are fast-forwarded through and hand-waved away, almost as if someone is trying not to admit they didn't love it. we see alice pushing bella into taking things that she "doesn't want" because it would, of course, be wrong to want them, even if it's so much fun to fantasize about having them. we see edward, controlling and demanding and angry, jacob, even worse, teachers fantasizing about their young female students, assault everywhere, dripping off the pages, misogyny so heavy even good relationships like the one with bella's kindly father are buckling under it--and we know stephenie meyer isn't horrified of it herself, but she still can't keep the dissatisfaction from creeping in, even in her fantasy--
in other words:
We chase romance, we structure our lives around it, we fashion much of our art and culture from it. The romance story is not only a narrative but becomes also, more disturbingly, an imperative.

Rosalie Hale is one of the most misunderstood characters in Twilight, largely because Bella is the protagonist and narrator in twilight and Edward is the narrator in Midnight Sun. We never really get an unbiased view of Rosalie. Through Bella's perspective, she often comes across as cold, shallow, or even cruel, but there's a lot more going on beneath the surface.
At first, Rosalie's dislike of Bella stems from two main things. The first is jealousy though not in the way people usually think. Rosalie was used to being admired for her beauty. As a human, her appearance was treated as her greatest asset because she grew up in a time when her parents viewed her beauty as a means to improve the family's social and economic status through marriage. Over time, Rosalie internalized the belief that her beauty made her valuable. So when Edward showed absolutely no romantic interest in her, despite showing interest in Bella, she took it as an insult to something she had always been taught defined her worth. It wasn't because she wanted Edward; it was because she couldn't understand why he didn't want her.
The second reason is much more practical: Bella genuinely posed a risk to the Cullens. She was a human who knew their secret, which endangered the entire family. If anything had happened to Bella or if one of them had lost control they would have been forced to leave. Rosalie's concerns weren't entirely unfounded. The Cullens eventually did have to leave because of Bella's involvement in their lives.
Then Bella decides she wants to become a vampire, which is where Rosalie's resentment deepens. For Rosalie, this is almost incomprehensible. She would give anything to be human again. Bella has the opportunity to grow old, change, experience new stages of life, have children, and build a future. Rosalie lost all of that the moment she became a vampire. So when Bella willingly throws that future away, Rosalie sees it as a tragic mistake. To her, Bella is a teenager making an irreversible decision without understanding what she might want in five years let alone five hundred.
Another criticism Rosalie receives is her behavior during Bella's pregnancy. Many people argue that Rosalie only cared about the baby and not Bella's wellbeing. But that's exactly why Bella turned to her in the first place. Bella knew Rosalie would prioritize the baby above everything else, even Bella's own safety. Bella wasn't shocked by that, nor did she feel betrayed by it. She specifically chose Rosalie because she knew where Rosalie's loyalties would lie. Rosalie gave Bella exactly what Bella wanted someone who would fight for the baby's survival no matter what.
Honestly, Rosalie is a deeply tragic character. A lot of her actions make more sense when you view them through the lens of someone who lost the life she desperately wanted and has spent decades mourning it. You don't have to agree with her choices, but reducing her to "the mean blonde vampire" misses a lot of what makes her interesting.
And while we're at it, I can't help noticing that Stephanie Meyer seemed to have a habit of making her blonde female characters the antagonistic or "mean girl" types.
Everyone likes to talk about the fact that Edward told Bella that if she walked away from their relationship, he’d let her.
HOWEVER.
Knowing this man and what goes on in his mind, he’d never *actually* let her go. He’d always be following her in the shadows, watching her while she sleeps, and lurking just out of her sight. Yes, he would be absolutely wrecked and a shell of the person he once was, but he’d never actually stop following her.
For additional context: the Spanish flu spread like wildfire amongst American troops at the end of the war and they often brought it home and/or contracted it on their way home. I have come across so many historical burials of WW1 soldiers who died that way. Of the 105 million people living in the U.S., 20 million of them contracted the Spanish flu and it disproportionately killed and permanently disabled young people.

One of the biggest inconsistencies in Twilight is that vampires are supposed to be frozen, yet Edward undergoes a lot of growth over the saga. However, I don’t think that it’s necessarily inconsistent because Bella was human.
We know that the one thing that does change a vampire is finding their mate. It’s the one thing that brings change into a vampire’s life.
Ordinarily, vampires become mates with other vampires. In the rare instances where a vampire has found their mate in a human, that person does not stay human for long. Usually, vampires do not need to change more after the initial change of falling in love. Both halves of the couple are frozen as they are, and therefore they’re frozen in a state of compatibility. There’s no need to change because their mate will always be the same person the vampire fell in love with.
However, Edward is very unusual in the sense that he became mates with a human and left her human for so long after falling in love with her. Bella was still able to grow and change. Edward could never fall out of love with Bella, so Bella being able to change might have forced Edward to change as well in order to stay compatible with her.
With this in mind, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that most of Edward’s growth happened after New Moon. The events of New Moon changed Bella. She developed things she valued outside of Edward—her relationship with Jacob, for example. Edward might have been able to change because Bella did.
She's not going to be able to talk about anything that's going on in her life without at least a layer or two of metaphor or obfuscation—and the ironic thing is that that, the removal from ordinary 'human' life, the obligation to lie all the time, is probably a lot of what she would want to talk about in therapy! This is what is so tragic about her being pulled into "the secret" in the first place. It's a big part of why Edward didn't want it for her. Especially since a major part of her character early on is that she does not like to lie. Trying to reveal just enough to a therapist to work on her issues, without revealing "the secret," would be a constant balancing act that would remind her of her alienation from human life just as much as it would help her. Actually, if people got into the tragedy of that more, rather than just using "therapy" as an uncomplicated shorthand for "Getting Better" (as if that's what psychiatry is about, rather than forcing conformance to a particular norm), I might be more into this trope.
Sometimes it just gets back into the "Bella and Edward are so fucked up and codependent and possessive and controlling and too wrapped up in each other's lives and Not Normal" thing, such that Bella needs to be Made Normal through therapy. This reminds me of the bit in Pride and Prejudice where Miss Bingley is like "balls are so tedious, it would be much more rational if conversation instead of dancing made the order of the day." And her brother is like “much more rational, I dare say, but not near so much like a ball." "It would be much normaller and more healthy if Bella got therapy and she and Edward stopped being so codependent and fucked up." "Much healthier, I dare say, but not near so much like a vampire romance."
patrick jane truly is a character of all time. he's arrogant. he's broken. he's haunted. he's funny. he's genuinely delighted by small pleasures. he likes breaking and entering. he's a tea snob. he's tortured frequently on screen. he flinches every time a gun goes off. he hides behind his female colleagues when he gets scared. he's a sociopath. he's a liar. he does magic tricks. he has basically no moral compass and will do anything to catch the guy who killed his wife and child, including lie to and use everyone he cares about. he sleeps on a mattress on the floor in the room his family was murdered in, with the calling card of their killer still on the wall. he loves children. he's very empathetic. he's the reason his family is dead. he loves setting traps and catching people in lies. he hates rich people and doesn't care when they get murdered. he's a card shark. he always knows what everyone is thinking. when people piss him off he makes their lives miserable. he hypnotises people all the time. he's a con man. he's the most honest guy you'll ever meet. like literally where else do you find a freak like that.

One of the funnier aspects of Breaking Dawn is how much quieter Edward gets when Bella is a vampire and much less likely to die Final Destination style. Yeah the Volturi are a problem but at least he can scrap his cabinets of files on Meteor Contingency Plans and What To Do If Bella Gets Jumanji’d

With the usual caveat of everyone should read and write the fanfic they like and characters are up to personal interpretation. . . I don't buy the 'Jasper feels everyone's thirst' argument for the following reasons:
Jasper deals with emotions. Thirst is a biological drive, a physical sensation. I don't think there's anything about how Jasper's gift is described to work in canon that suggests he's feeling anyone else's physical pain, thirst or otherwise. Fear, happiness, self-doubt, anger, hate, love, yes yes yes. Emotional pain? Sure. Thirst, hunger, heat, cold? No.
In Midnight Sun, Edward experiences JASPER's thirst, not the other way around: "This was all quite normal, usually easy to ignore. It was harder just now, with the feelings stronger, doubled, as I monitored Jasper’s reaction. Twin thirsts, rather than just mine." And that makes sense to me? Because Edward's gift is literally getting into someone's head, experiencing the world as they are experiencing it in that moment. Jasper's not in your head. He feels what you feel but he doesn't know the why. He's not a mind reader. He knows you're feeling desperate and ashamed and maybe guesses, "someone smells good, huh?" but he doesn't know, IMO.
Here's my biggest hurdle, though: I can't understand how Jasper would have been an effective second in command to Maria if he were feeling all the newborns' thirsts all the time! I get that the Cullens have a self-denial thing going on and may be 'thirstier' than the average mature vampire, but surely being surrounded by dozens of ravenous newborns would be worse? How would he be able to concentrate, to train, to fight, to survive, during all that if he were experiencing newborn-levels of thirst times 10, 20, whatever all the time? Jasper says in Eclipse that HATE was his constant companion, not thirst. He also says in Eclipse that being with the Cullens is a climate he enjoys; if he were being tortured by six other thirsts, I tend to doubt he'd enjoy it.
I think it's just more INTERESTING if this isn't the problem! It's more interesting if he's just bad at it. Giving him the excuse of "well he can't help it he has to feel all the other thirsts" is boring to me. I LIKE him being bad at it! I like the idea that he's not totally sold on the whole Cullen thing, that he's doing this for Alice, that he has bad habits from Maria, that maybe he's intellectually fine with eating humans and but forced to grapple with it emotionally because he has to feel the emotions of those he's killing . . . THAT's more interesting to me than making excuses for him. Of course, your mileage may vary there! This one is totally subjective!
I will concede that he may feel emotions related to thirst. Shame, guilt, anger, desire, whatever, and that could be distracting and make self-control a bit more difficult. But I don't think it's literally the thirst (as in physical thirst/pain) and I don't think it's the root of the problem given that he was able to function as a leader during his time with Maria and wasn't driven to distraction by the ravenous thirsts of dozens of newborns.

The thing people don't understand about Bella is that she unconditionally and irrevocably matched Edward's freak. He broke into her house to watch her sleep, fucked up her truck so she couldn't see her other friends, ate tears off of her face, and she was super into it. That's why fan lore where Bella is grounded or relatable doesn't work. We were explicitly told that she was these things because it's how she saw herself, but at every possible turn in the entire series she is insane and melodramatic and obsessively insecure and controlling and that's why she and Edward belong together.
This will maybe be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t want to see the Volturi overthrown in a future Twilight book, and I think it’s generally a good thing that they weren’t overthrown in Breaking Dawn.
Yes, the Volturi are evil and corrupt. Yes, Aro regularly destroys covens and enslaves their more useful members. But they’re kind of a necessary evil. The only thing standing between the mass enslavement and death of humans is the Volturi. Now, they certainly didn’t rise to power and create the law of secrecy to protect humans, but that’s what happened. The only thing stopping vampires from killing en masse or enslaving people is the law of secrecy. Vampires generally just don’t care enough about humans to control themselves.
If the Volturi got overthrown, then it would either be mass chaos or the Romanians would take over. The same Romanians who enslaved humans and didn’t limit how much they ate. The best case scenario would be that Carlisle takes over, but I don’t think he wants to, and the Romanians want power too much to let him. The Romanians don’t want the law of secrecy, and once that is removed, there’d be mass enslavement of humans, a bunch of immortal children, and vampires killing humans without limiting themselves.
I think the ideal situation is that we get what was in Life and Death, where Sulpicia and Athenadora rule alongside Marcus. But I don’t think the Volturi can be completely done away with.
