A Wintry morning hints at the promise of Spring.

I was delighted this morning to receive word from Shannon Algiere at Stone Barns that the first Calendula flowers of the season were opening their resinous blooms. Walking to the fields with my camera, I was rewarded by spending some time observing these amazing plants. The Calendula plants absorb the abundant early summer sunshine, and transform that energy into a sticky resin that coats the buds and flowers. Their oil has been used for centuries to heal skin conditions ranging from eczema to dermatitis. The petals are edible, and look lovely sprinkled on a salad and were used as a saffron substitute in stews by the Romans. It is an especially gentle plant, which is why it is our ingredient of choice for skin care for babies, youngsters and even oldsters with sensitive skin. Coming from a local, sustainable source it brings both beauty and prosperity to our little corner of the Hudson Valley.

If your child has Dermatitis, Eczema or just sensitive skin, chances are there are ingredients out there - possibly even natural ones - that will trigger irritation. Introducing skin care products to your child’s skin in the same way that you would introduce foods to a baby one at time will allow you to observe their response in a controlled way.  We recommend beginning to use our Golden Calendula Oil on babies and highly sensitive children because it has the simplest, most basic list of ingredients.
