letters of my twenties (& thirties probably)

No fomo for nautilus because I gave a presentation to them and natgeo leadership against deep sea mining when I was 27 knowing they were the vessel gathering all the bathymetric data for mining companies and now they won’t work with me ever again BUT their ceo been STILL lurking to track our movement work for the last 6 years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So is being a parent just the art of letting go

Things will never be the same again. They already aren’t.

I thought about how a heat wave manifests deeply when I read ministry of the future. the kids and the elderly and the pregnant. I considered tree cover and shade access and how cities are set up to worsen or support air flow. I thought about air conditioning and ice and India, thinking the equatorial communities are the most at risk likely to die in masse.

my mom gifted me a deep internal compass when I was young. I donʻt know borders or countries on a map but I have always been able to know where north is. now that foundation is being applied to the sky, and iʻm being given the tools to find my way from anywhere using the stars. this is how humans have always navigated the world.

trump opened the largest marine protected area in the northern hemisphere last week, and I got to hear from the woman who established it what it means. I figured that was enough, to see her on stage, after being too scared to talk to her nearly every other time I've seen her. but to meet her niece, to be on the same flight home, to talk story at the gate, to have her tell me my baby will be the fifth generation fighting for this place. to have her start thinking out loud about strategy, about peaceful sit-ins at the longline offices and ukulele protests, and how we have to do the unexpected move because this isn't about America its about kuleana. she says "I'm only home for three days this week, but now that they are older, my boys understand. my mission wasn't always just them."
