You open the door to your apartment a little more harsher than usual. Tears threaten to storm out your eyes like lightning, you can feel the sting coming from your very soul. Today has been disgustingly hard for you. It’s like the world is against you. What could you possibly have done to deserve this? You wake up feeling sick, you go to work only to be yelled at constantly. When does it ever end?

Closing the door behind you, you look around the house for Caleb. Right, Caleb. He would know how to make things better. You check the living room. He would know how to calm me down, he always does. You check the bedroom. He knows me inside out. You check the kitchen, but he isn’t there. You make your way to the living room and slump on the couch, your head falling back and looking up on the ceiling. Everything gets blurry. Not even the love of your life is here. Why would he be anyway? Would he want to be here? Why would I want him here? I’m a complete mess. Maybe it’s better he doesn’t see me like thi-

“Pipsqueak?”

You hear his voice as he steps in the apartment. Your head snaps towards the front door, quickly wiping away any tears that even dared to fall. You see his tall frame fill the space at the entrance. “Caleb, hi.” You say trying to at least appear happy. Caleb squints at you. He makes his way over to the couch sitting next to you. “Bad day?” He asks, seeing through you instantly. Your shoulders slump. He noticed of course he noticed. Your nostrils flare as you try to hold back the tears that are suddenly threatening to fall. Your jaw tightens. “That obvious?” You huff out a self deprecating laugh. This is embarrassing. You watch Caleb smile, he looks at you with such soft eyes. With such love. Giving up, you nod looking away shamefully.

It’s always Caleb coming to your rescue. He always helps you. And it’s becoming frequent. Helping you get out of bed whenever you don’t have the motivation. Helping you with hygiene. It’s like you’re a lifeless doll and he constantly has to control you in the ways that matter. Caleb tilts his head trying to catch your gaze. “Pips, I can hear your thoughts from here.” His voice brings you back into reality. You feel guilty. Useless. “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I’ve been-” he cuts you off. “Shhh. It’s okay.” He gently pulls you down so your head is resting on his lap. Your tears finally start to come out. They roll down your face. You feel his fingers card through your hair. He’s so gentle with you.
