I’ll be really honest with you, my experience with online communities has been exactly the same as what you’ve described. I really wish I could say otherwise and give you some pointers to help but unfortunately I think the nature of online communities is always varied and shifting because there’s just a lot of strangers in one space who can act in any way they please, whether it’s an authentic portrayal of themselves or not. I don’t want to let too much of my personal experience bleed into this because I don’t want to sound jaded or discouraging, but I would honestly recommend not giving online spaces a lot of social power in your life. I think they’re good in small doses, and as casual hangout spots, but, from what I’ve seen, investing a lot of trust or vulnerability in discords or other community servers can end up getting you burned.

My theory on why my blog has been a safe and effective community space is because I am the single point of curation - I want the vibe here to feel a very specific way, and I am completely in charge of that. What gets posted, reblogged, answered, etc - it’s all by and through me. When you bring literally any other person into the mix, that curation and reliability goes out the window.
