not to get parasocial and weird about it. but something about seeing the nihilistic rock star who shaped your identity and artistic sensibility at twelve years old, who outwardly flirted with death and self-destruction and gave voice to all the taboo darknesses you could feel starting to well up around the edges of your own mind like a boat taking on water, who taught you that no matter how or cool or attractive or successful you became, that darkness could still linger, and that it didn’t have to be an albatross if you made your peace with it but it would still drag you down if you let it, who struggled despite money and support and privilege and treatment, and stopped talking about it altogether after years of public and media scrutiny - something about seeing them age into glasses and gray hair and wrinkles and weekends out with their family when you yourself are finally settling into your real adult life hits.
