Often, as we walk outside, we come across feathers that have been discarded by the birds that live all around us. While these are pretty and make cute keepsakes regardless of their meaning (I like adding my favourites to my altar), it is important to understand what the world is telling you by placing this feather in your path.
When you randomly come across the feather of a wild bird, the Air is sending you a signal. The meaning of this signal depends mainly on the feather’s colour, movement, and position.
When a feather is pointing in the same direction as you are walking (i.e., the tip of the quill is facing away from you), you are headed in the right direction– if not geographically, then in life. Continue doing what you are doing.
When a feather is pointing in the opposite direction that you are walking (i.e., the tip of the quill points toward your feet), you may be forgetting something important which you must revisit. If you are running away from something, you have unfinished business and will not escape what you flee until it is resolved.
When a feather is pointing to your right, an increase will be found– perhaps your health will improve, or you will come into some money. More often, this is a small increase, like a few days with good weather or hearing from a friend.
When a feather is pointing to your left, a decrease will occur– an unforeseen expense may be encountered, or you may fall ill. Again, more often, it is a small decrease– usually the Air is trying to tell you you need to do better at holding on to something, like studying to prevent your grades from falling or saving your money for a rainy day.
When a feather is stuck quill-tip down into the ground, the message in the colour is important– the Air wants your attention immediately. An urgent omen.
A white feather is relatively rare in central Texas. Few wild birds are pure white, and this is an exceptionally good omen. It represents the Soul, and hope. Maybe an ancestor is trying to get in touch with you, as there is something your blood wants you to know. Its negative meaning (e.g., when found pointing left) often carries a warning that someone with a long illness may be reaching the end of their life. Always keep these feathers, ideally leaving an offering in their place.
A red feather usually belongs to a cardinal, and represents strength, stability, and the material world. It may also mean a matter of the heart is at hand– perhaps you have an admirer, or your lover is thinking of you. Very rarely, you may find a red feather which has come from the wing of an Inca dove, and this symbolises marriage and family. Your loved ones are near, and you ought to keep them close and remind them that you love them.
A blue feather could come from a blue jay or scrub jay, and symbolises knowledge and communication. Often, it will portend something to do with the academic field, and its position is important to note. Bring it with you for peace and awareness, and place it on an altar when you pray to strengthen your ability in school and communication.
A yellow feather brings joy, and often comes from a goldfinch, warbler, or female tanager. It symbolises happiness, acceptance, energy, and mental strength. Give it as a gift to someone you love and pray that it brings them some positivity, especially if they are going through a mentally trying time.
A green feather may come from any number of female birds, and represents fertility, abundance, harmony, and emotional wellbeing. If you are hoping to become pregnant and find a green feather pointing in the same direction as your path, then you are taking the right steps!
An orange feather is rather rare, and comes most probably from an oriole. It denotes change, creativity, and ambition. If you are wishing for a promotion at work and find an orange feather in a good position, you may get it– but if it point to the left or toward your feet, you may be trying too hard to get somewhere you just aren’t meant to be, and neglecting something more important like your family or your mental health.
A pink feather is extremely rare– I have never seen one! It brings romance and inspiration, and since the most likely place to see it is outside a craft store, perhaps that inspiration will do you good!
A purple feather is also extremely rare. Someone is trying to send you a psychic message but you are not receptive to it. Ask the people around you to be more direct; no one can read minds.
A brown feather symbolises grounding and respect, and usually comes from the female cardinal. Generally, if I find it pointing toward my feet, it’s trying to tell me to talk to my mother because she needs something (I know, that seems specific. But usually when I find this, I check my phone, and she’s trying to call or text me.)
A grey feather represents peace, and often comes from the mockingbird. It usually is trying to tell you about the uncertainties of life– if you are thinking of a question, there may not be an easy or concrete answer. When the quill-tip of a grey feather points toward your path, it is usually telling you that a good result will come, but with hard work on the way.
A black feather may symbolise protection or be an important warning. I always bring these with me when I find them. They usually come from a grackle (these tend to be a warning or a sign that you need to spend a little time getting more in touch with your magic and spirituality) or a vulture (these usually lend protection, or are nudging you to spend more time with your friends and family). Vulture feathers tend to be huge and sturdy, and I like to bring them home and use them to waft incense smoke around. Plus they’re just really cool to hold.
When you find a still feather simply lying on the ground, you may take its meaning at face value.
When a feather blows across your path on the wind, you should follow it to see where it lands. Similarly to finding a feather pointing downward, this symbolises an urgent message.
When a feather falls directly at your feet or even into your lap, the event it portends will come sooner rather than later.
When you come across a feather lying on the ground but it blows away, it is not meant for you. Do not try to find it.
