It's a little bit funny when I talk about how what passes for autistic advocacy on Tumblr often operates by openly throwing other neurodivergent people under the bus ā critically including other autistic people whose communication needs don't conform with a very specific archetype ā and folks come at me assuming that I'm some clueless allistic who's being mean to them for no reason, because Does This Look Like A Blog A Neurotypical Person Would Run.
I have insisted for a long time that while the stereotypes that neurotypical people have about autistic people are awful, they're also predictable: it is a pretty standard set of consistent, wrong beliefs. Nobody, however, believes more bizarre things about autistic people than autistic people. Autistic people are out here reinventing eugenics, Mary Baker Eddy-style Neo-Gnostic Positivism, deterministic teleology, all sorts of things from first principles that are, crucially, also wrong. It's fascinating, if somewhat frustrating. (My usual joke about my one friend's Facebook page is 'Neurotypicals Don't Understand All Autistic People Use Clear Communication' Says Autistic Woman Who Constantly Ghosts Others For Months.)
I'm not sure I'd call the prevalence of eugenicist rhetoric in certain stripes of online autistic advocacy a reinvention, per se; "nerds are literally, materially a more 'highly evolved' clade of humans" is a mind-gremlin that's been clinging to nerd culture since before the Internet was a thing, and certain online spaces seem simply to have absorbed it wholesale.
So, uh
Sam Neill passed away.
A lot of people know him as Dr. Grant from Jurassic Park, but Sam Neill has an incredible catalogue of film and television, stretching back to 1975 on the big screen, but he cut his teeth in university productions of Shakespearean dramas.
All this to say, Sam Neill never let himself get pigeonholed as an actor. He was an incredibly versatile actor with a plethora of roles and genres to his name.
And that's not even touching upon his interests outside of acting. He was a passionate vintner (of the Two Paddocks winery) and an outspoken environmentalist who frequently spoke out against political policy that negatively affected indigenous peoples in Australia and New Zealand.
Jurassic Park is an incredible film, and I know many people have fond memories of the original trilogy.
But Sam Neill was more than just Dr. Grant. And I think that should be remembered too.
I'm sorry WHAT
'lazy people don't feel guilty about not doing anything' is insane to me and I have been trying to make my brain believe it for a long time, it shocked me to my core when I first heard it

Now remember kids, unless the character directly turns to the camera and says "Hello audience. I identify as a transgender woman. Please use she/her pronouns from now on when referring to me. Thank you.", then he isn't really trans. No, the glaringly obvious subtext or word of the Creator don't count. He has to say the magic words. That's literally the only way you can tell a character is transgender. Extremely explicit magic words.
tired of cannibalism as a metaphor for love or sex. can we get into cannibalism as a metaphor for colonization.
1. Europeans using Egyptian mummies as medicine
2. The Delectable Negro: Human Consumption and Homoeroticism Within US Slave Culture by Vincent Woodard
3. "Abolitionists turned the tables on Europeans by accusing them of being cannibals when they ate sugar tainted with the flesh and blood of slaves."
4. Zombies (which I would class as cannibals, since they were human and need to eat humans to live) have a root in Haitian folklore and represented enslavement.
adding that, if you can find it, cannibal culture by deborah root is about exactly this. the way the white western world is a hungry, destructive force that cannibalizes non-white cultures and creates wealth and status through the cannibal colonization of those cultures.
here's the intro
i almost think there's an essay in bell hooks' black looks about this too? yes! just checked, there's an essay called "eating the other"
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.
I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'
Like... come on man, 310 pages isn't even what I would've considered a particularly long book as a kid.
actually fucking disgusting that glasses cost any money like if you actually think about it for more than a few seconds it is so unconscionably inhumane. this goes for things like insulin and mobility aids and hearing aids too ofc but fuck man, fucking glasses? the thing you need to fucking see? its genuinely sickening and inhumanly evil that those cost ANYTHING.
Whenever I say that glasses cost too much, someone who doesn't wear glasses responds negatively. And my response every time, without fail, is "If you don't want to hear my complaining about having to spend on average 60 euro a year, then feel free to give me 60 euro a year and I will stay quiet on the topic."
Would you believe me if I said that no one has taken me up on my offer?
(then i complain an extra time for good meassure)

Hey yeah so unfun fact I did go through this process and I know my experience is one among many, BUT,
my birth was in a CONTROLLED MEDICAL SETTING agreed upon with me, my OBGYN and additional medical staff. I'm so thankful I did this vs the trendy home birth stuff because hey guess what?
my birth, specifically, took 36 HOURS TOTAL to get my baby out. That was WITH an epidural, WITH pitocin, and finally WITH an emergency c-section. It was HELL but I am so glad I get to see my happy healthy baby now and not have to go through the exhausting effort of living through third trimester. But here's another fun fact: some labor can last even LONGER, especially if there's complications like mine where baby is too big for the birth canal, labor isn't progressing because of a multitude of things, or just y'know the DOZENS of other complications that could arise that could put baby and the one giving birth in CRITICAL MEDICAL DANGER. Especially if this is your first baby, you have no idea what your body is able to do and not do. And especially especially if you have gestational diabetes or are deemed a high risk pregnancy. Don't fucking do it. Go to a hospital or accredited birthing center bare minimum.
This shit is no joke people. Many have died in the past due to childbirth or complications associated with it. Hospitals cannot deny you care if you are legitimately actively in labor. And if you're there and they have a L&D team to take care of you you can kick anyone out of the room that you don't feel comfortable with, no questions asked.
Please be mindful of this and remember to do safe shit.
Stop fucking fearmongering about birth you dumbass. Home births are completely safe if you get a midwife, 9/10 times birth is not a medical emergency.
Ok, so I may have let my own birth experience reflect in my first response, and I shouldn't have painted all out-of-hospital births as a reckless trend. I've only really seen pressure put onto it via social media trends so that was my experience with it. The 'cascade of interventions' you mentioned is a recognized concept in obstetrics, and I agree that for healthy, low-risk individuals, a planned home birth with a Certified Nurse-Midwife can be a safe choice.
However, I know it's an unpredictable event where things can go sideways in the blink of an eye. ACOG is very specific about who can actually attempt this safely. A home birth ceases to be safe the moment there are contraindications like prior C-sections, fetal malpresentation, multiples, gestational complications (like preeclampsia or the gestational diabetes I mentioned).
"9/10 times the body can do it alone." The clinical reality for first-time mothers is that 23% to 37% of them actually require a hospital transfer mid-labor due to exhaustion or failure to progress (which was my case as well).
So, I'm sorry if I demonized home birth, but it's definitely exclusive to certain individuals. My point remains that without those strict safety nets, bypassing a hospital becomes a massive gamble on life
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
