Anthy’s scandilacious secret being that she not only was the victim of rape by Akio but also was not drugged or asleep during the assault. This awareness and remnant of “agency” in her victimization makes her a threat to Akio and also turns her from being a princess (perfect victim) to a witch (whore). This fall from grace making her an acceptable target of violence, making her victimhood secondary to her impurity. How dare this witch do away with the prince. Doesn’t she know we need him? Stab her.
we don't credit rebecca sugar enough for making the episode with the first gay wedding in a kids show extremely plot relevant so it could not be skipped or cut.
#rebecca sugar has gone on record saying that they knew from the beginning they wanted ruby and sapphire and they put every inch of planning#in to make sure that the studio could not take them out. sugar has said they’d compromised on hundreds of things they’d wanted for steven#so that they had the bargaining power specifically to keep ruby and sapphire’s relationship#and a number of ‘filler’ episodes were created just to establish counter-arguments that might come up when they pitched the wedding episode#the one that comes to mind is the episode about steven and connie getting lost in rose’s room steven’s central conflict about liking their#fave book series’ romantic ending was later weaponised when producer’s were like ‘oh but steven’s a boy he won’t be too interested in them#getting married’ sugar was able to be like ‘no. in this episode it’s established he loves romance and specifically weddings. and in these#episodes it’s shown how much steven cares about ruby and sapphire and their relationship and happiness. you cannot convince me this is not#good and necessary plot development#and they wrapped it up in the season finale and the big climactic point of the diamonds finally coming to attack earth to make the#episode integral to the series no skipping it without confusion. and had ruby wear a wedding dress because international censors took#advantage of her design to give her a masculine va#and sugar made certain that everybody knew This was a queer love story that an entire town supported and admired and that any child watchin#it at home would know they are not alone and that that support is waiting for them out there somewhere#sugar sacrificed the wider story they wanted to tell for that and it was a horrible decision to be given but they made the right choice
These weren’t even the biggest sacrifices. CN basically gave her an ultimatum and canceled the show for it. She knew this would likely happen and that’s why season 5 is paced so fast. She could have had 2 more seasons but that wouldn’t be worth it without ruby and sapphire
Yeah, they were given an ultimatum and they lost their show over this.
And they have said they stand by it.
this isn't to say that leftist/activist readings of rgu are invalid, but i do think that despite the title, the story fundamentally is not about the process of changing the systems that oppress us through revolution.
throughout the story of utena, the ones who "revolutionize the world" are generally seen as the ones who buy the most into the patriarchal system and want to uphold it. their "revolution" is in controlling others for the sake of their own ego, not about genuine change. they all see themselves as revolutionary, but none of them revolutionize anything. they are all tools of the system and fail to escape it.
utena's "revolution," then, is when she no longer buys into that system. the "revolution" of rgu is one in which you realize the system is broken and reject it entirely. this could be read as an individualist perspective, but i don't think that's necessarily the case. rather, rgu's core tenant is that you cannot control other people. everyone has agency, and they must decide how to use that agency themselves. attempting to control others is childish. becoming an adult is realizing the only person you can change is yourself.
the reason i don't think rgu is about systemic change or revolution in the leftist sense is because the story ends before we can begin to see how rgu views that process. our characters' arcs are about rejecting the current system, not about building a new one, which is fundamental to the idea of revolution. the world outside the current system is a complete unknown to the characters and the audience. we don't know what a different world would look like. that's part of what's so scary about rejecting the current system, but rgu insists it's still worth it.
so, at the end of the day, rgu does not commentate on what building a better society looks like. it leaves that up to the audience to decide. utena may have started the revolution by rejecting the system that exists, but it's up to us to determine what the rest of that revolution will look like. we still have work to do.

dead wife jokes banned in the house due to current events
starting the countdown until gaylors start saying that Adam Sandler officiating Taylor's wedding (sorry if this is how you found out) is actually proof that it's a sham because it's a reference to I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007), in which Sandler and Kevin James play heterosexual men who enter a mutually beneficial fake gay marriage, a dynamic that Taylor is inverting as a queer woman pretending to be straight while cleverly flagging the obvious farce to those with the eyes to see
this is worst than finding out from a castiel meme
ppl are so mad in the replies to this tweet but op is literally right

How's Daredevil? The book is famously good consistently since Miller, but nobody ever seems to talk about any of the 20th century stuff except exactly Miller. Sometimes Anne Nocenti (rarely the text and much more "oh yeah important comics woman also wrote this book"). So how is the actual text? Any standout runs? Any massive stinkers?
So full disclosure... DD has been one of my more universally unliked books as I have read through the order.
Everything from him making up a fake brother to him heading out to San Fran and no one figuring out he was Matt Murdock has always been in my top 10 least liked arcs I've had to read.
That said, Miller's run DOES deserve some credit... it took a generally uninteresting character and did wonders for him.
Anne's run was... inconsistent... Sometimes she would just hit it out of the park, but often she would do things like "I can do the same thing that Miller did but better!" and it turns out that no, she can't. Also, she has a problem with collecting pet issues and then slamming them full force into a book to the point that the plot suffers irreparable damage.
D.G. Chichester came after, and his run started out insanely solid, to the point that I was so confused why I saw so much hate about it... Then I got to the second half and yeah... ok I got it.
Karl Kesel's run, which I am like 2 issues from coming to the end of, was surprisingly good... I liked the more lighthearted nature of it, but it still can tell some solid stories... the Mr. Fear arc really sticking out...
After this, Kevin Smith is set to take over, and while I've not read it, I have very much heard good things about it (aside from one plot point that... well... if you know you know).

In 2026, the chicest thing a gay actor can do is never explicitly come out as gay but also make it abundantly clear that he is. Coming out is too modern. Staying closeted is too old fashioned. But this method merges contemporary freedom with Old Hollywood glamour and allure, and it weeds out the dumbest people who truly don’t get it. I call it the Pascal Method.
Taylor Swift does this
no she doesn’t
You clearly don't go here or to queer history and signaling, or both, enough to have this conversation and I'm not going to explain it to you. You could have asked questions, you could have done even a modicum of research. You didn't and you made yourself look ignorant. Goodbye.
