Currently thinking of Mike who was bullied as a kid and probably as a teenager for his looks and started to internalise his bullies’s words. He grew up truly believing he is ugly and weird looking, and hated his body after being called a “twig”. Mike thinking he has to accept that about himself, his “ugliness”, and seeing this not as an opinion, but as a fact.
Then, when in college with Will, Will gets an assignment of drawing a portrait of someone he knows, so he asks Mike if he could model for him.
Mike is super shocked by the request, looking genuinely confused at Will and asking him “why are you asking me? You should ask someone who’s handsome who’ll translate better on paper, I don’t want to screw the assignment for you”. And Will is baffled telling him “but Mike, you are handsome”.
Mike has a really hard time accepting it, his mind refuses to believe someone other than his mom finds him good looking, he tries telling Will he’s too scrawny and that his bone structure is weird and Will refuses to hear any of it, grabbing him by his face with his both his hands, looking at him straight in his eyes, and telling him “Mike, you are beautiful”.
Mike tears up and Will continues to list everything he finds beautiful about Mike (which is everything). at the beginning of this, Mike is really uncomfortable hearing all these compliments, but as Will continues, he starts accepting that maybe, maybe, if the bullies weren’t right about any of his friends, maybe they were wrong about him too.
