Aaaaand I will tell you your confusion is totally understandable. “Line” is a pretty vague term to be honest. I believe it’s one of those concepts that got carried over to figure skating from classical ballet (another example of those which you might’ve heard of is “toe point”). In the ballet world, “line” refers to the outline the dancer creates with their body while performing. Note that it’s not always straight lines we’re talking about, rather it’s about how the entirety of the dancer’s body, their arms, their legs, their torso and their head, works together in harmony. For example in this classical image of a classical ballet position, the arabesque, you can see how the dancer is using her whole body, from the point of her toe to the arch of her back to the tip of her fingers to the tilt of her head to create a shape that is very much pleasing to the eyes.

Now when most people talk about “line” in figure skating, they mean a rough equivalence of its ballet counterpart. I say it’s a rough equivalence, because obviously skating and ballet are two very different forms of performance and it’s never a good idea to indiscriminately use ballet concepts to evaluate skating, which is why you won’t be able to find the word “line” in the meaning we’re discussing anywhere in the ISU’s technical panel handbook or program component guideline. I can’t speak for everyone, but personally when I use the word “line” I’m thinking in terms of the way skaters carry themselves: how they use their body while doing turns/steps/other transitions, the shape they create while spinning, the extension and balance they achieve as they exit jumps, as well as smaller details like whether or not they choose to incorporate their hands into their movements. Some examples?
