these fuckers woke me up at 5am this morning

i just refilled the feeders last night and now they're empty again. i was able to rat proof the bird feeders but the crows are smart and so persistent. i bent the hooks and handles with pliers and a hammer but its like they're pro gamers at that wire buzzer game

this guy is a pellucid fly. at first i thought he was a bumblebee flying weirdly but when he landed i saw those big fly eyes. his are a bit damaged but he manages to fly around like a normal fly

pellucid means clear and translucent wbich i can see where it gets its name with its white band that looks transparent

pellucid flies are way bigger than any other hover flies i have seen or heard

yesterday i found a dead squirrel :( i don't want to photograph him but i would like to preserve his bones so i made a cage for him to decompose in and hopefully keep scavengers from taking him away

while i was making this one of the buzzards was circling a lot closer to the house than normal. i wonder if it noticed the squirrel or it was just a coincidence that it was chasing the swallows nearer than usual

the black dots are the swallows. they're nesting in one of the outbuildings

his wings were just a blur maybe he had just emerged and was drying them out? i dont think he was cold bc it was quite warm. maybe he was preparing to take off bc he flew off into fields a few seconds after this.
