Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), taken December 7, 2025, in Georgia, US
A unique little squirrel visiting the feeders! From what I could find, this individual seems to have some form of dwarfism. He's about half the size of a normal adult squirrel, sports a cute little baby face, and has disproportionally large feet! His right ear is underdeveloped, an apparently common occurrence in dwarf squirrels, which makes it easier to spot him from afar, though he has no issue getting close to me. I nearly stepped on him the other day trying to go down the stairs because he was right there and I didn't see him. We scared the crap out of each other, but everything turned out okay lol! He's a cutie, and I hope he continues to stick around!
do you know what the deal is with this weird squirrel? we have a lot of black squirrels in the park nearby but ive never seen one like this before. symmetrical pattern, its other side looked the same.
Eastern grey squirrels are funky! Here are oddly colored individuals on my favorite iNaturalist group, they seem to be the most commonly reported species. Melanistic ones don’t always come in pure black, they can be very interesting like the one you saw!

A Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) looking at passers-by from aloft a London Plane tree in St James' Park for a good while before scurrying away to continue its foraging. This had given me enough time to get the focus right that had kept going to the branches behind the squirrel.
