My Garden Visitor by kfocean01 I spotted a Praying Mantis in my garden one summer. I was lucky to get this photo when it hopped up on my finger and posed for the camera. https://flic.kr/p/2hv7EW5

Today my boss called us over to come look at this huge hickory horned devil he found on the trail. This is the biggest larva I've ever seen and I got a little obsessed. I've also never held a bug so alarmingly STRONG (it didn't appreciate being picked up and let me know by thrashing around and poking me through the back of my gloves with those defensive spines. No worries, not poisonous or venomous, just pointy.)
I tried moving it off the trail and onto two different trees before realizing that the reason it kept climbing back onto the ground is that these fellas pupate underground, sometimes for almost two years. I hope it eventually decided on a nice spot to burrow.
she is coming to say hello to you!!
