His arms are tense with goosebumps and the short hair on the back of his neck is standing up. It’s chilly. That’s all, it’s cold, it’s not anything else. 

Hudson thinks he speaks for everyone, not all the time, just right now.

It’s been a long, strange trip and it’s not even close to its end.

     “That’s not true, y’know.” He hasn’t said a word to the guy sitting next to him before right this second, but now it’s falling out of his mouth all at once. The lady on the bench a few down from theirs – in that it’s the one they’re both sitting on, not that they made the bench or that they commissioned it, and he’s seen some benches in some places that were built because of someone who died and it’s not theirs because of that either – is telling her child: No, no, honey, you can’t give them rice. They’ll get sick, honey, they’ll die.

     Birdy continues, plaintively: “That if you feed birds rice they’ll die. That’s crazy.”

   “D’you still have an in with NASA, or more specifically NASA merchandise?” Their elbow bends backwards to smack his arm. “Hicks. Are you awake. I need you to steal office supplies for my friend.”

The one part of Harvey’s drink that he can never enjoy is the garnish, every time. A stupid affectation that he’s ended up carrying around in an empty glass– empty except for the celery. He can’t eat it.

He takes a look at the drink in the hand of the person closest to him as he settles with his elbow on the bar, ‘what is that?’

ANIMAL: a dog of some kind. the breed doesn’t matter, but probably something st. bernard sized. what does matter is the sense of quiet loyal company, unconditional love, and a set of sharp teeth. 2. COLOR(S):  shades of green derivative of the military and muddy forests. deep blues, teal, and crimson reds. 3. MONTH:  december.... he feels like the part of winter that’s still Happy. 4. SEASON:  still winter!!!! he’s a winter boy. fall is a close second, but there’s something about the shortest days that just sits right with hicks’ tempo. 11. PLACE:  well the thing is ---he makes his homes in people all the time, which is a dangerous but easy thing to do when you live nomadically. i think his place place is really any bed that he’s fallen half asleep in, drenched in drowsy doses of peace and comfort.    12. dwayne hicks is more of a mess than he can handle when it comes to romance. it should go without saying by now  — -mostly for lack of effort, a plain lack of trying. he was taught to wear up brick walls until the day he dropped dead, and you know what they say about habits. it’s about three weeks to build a new one, and god fucking knows how long to kick the thing back down.      ken has been the itch he’d had no clue how to scratch. 

nights before this one have often been spent awake, stirring over books or bad memories until he passes out or finally finds solace in a family that are better off for their unconventionality. it’s a funny thing , --- by all means they’re parents even if they’re hardly married. they’re hardly even a couple. up until now it wasn’t much exertion to pretend that they weren’t anything more than just good friends. 

a kiss on the lips really does beg something more.       

it’s not that a kiss anywhere is inherently romantic, but intention bleeds out when you manage to wriggle yourself so close to another person. he can definitively place a finger on the drive, and worst ( maybe best ) of all : he can find the same feeling tucked away inside himself. scratch scratch scratch scratch.

on a slow inhale he manages to find enough courage within his battered self to actually level some pressure back. the progression is slow but considerate. tenderhearted. his hands rise to sit on either side of their face, drinking in the blur of their dimly lit features. the ceiling lamp’s bulb is on it’s last legs.
