Look for the signs gents...
I Almost Slammed My Maverick 88 On The Ground.
SUMMARY OF THE FOLLOWING LONG ASS STORY:
If you get a Plasticote Zytel Fiberglass heat shield and put it on a Maverick 88... you might get some cartridge feeding problems because the heat shield clamps will slightly hit the pump action clips on the forearm.Β Β
--------
I've been modifying my Maverick 88 for more of a home defense gun; shorter 18.5 inch barrel, pistol grip, shell holder, heat shield, etc. The gun has performed fine all these years I've had it. I've put well over 1000 rounds through it and have been satisfied with the ol' cheap piece of awesome. After purchasing and receiving the heat shield a couple weeks ago, I finally took it out this past weekend to see how it performs. I wondered if the heat shield would vibrate, shake loose or whatever else I may not expect (I'm a firm believer in Newton's Law). After emptying the magazines first 5 rounds, the shotgun performed flawlessly. I reloaded for a second go around when I noticed it dried fired. I pulled the pump action again on the 'rattle trap' and noticed the shell did not feed into the receiver.Β I smacked on it a bit for 'percussion maintenance' and then the cartridge interrupter fell out. So I decided to take it home and work on it. After stripping it down and making sure everything was together right, it still didn't feed the shells. I stripped it down again and cleaned it well to make sure the cartridge stop wasn't binding from build-up and put it back together... and nothing. On the third disassemble I noticed that the feed ramp wasn't binding with the barrel when I pumped the action. It seemed that the barrel was the problem. So I compared my old 28" barrel to my 18.5" barrel and they seemed a perfect match. But something wasn't adding up, it fired fine with the shorter barrel all the times before. Upon closer inspection I could see that the forearm clips were binding when the action was pulled back. I then noticed that the plasticote zytel fiberglass heat shield was pushing on them when the action was wrenched back. I took a pair of cutters and cut the clamps on the heat shield and problem solved. My cheap-ass Maverick 88 looks awesome and performs well. So if you buy a plasticote zytel fiberglass heat shield and you get some feeding problems, trim on the clamp fitting.
