When is enough ever enough? One bayonet begats another, and then probably another. The National Soldier Factory just west of the square in Gettysburg had this Ontario Knife Comany (OKC) 3S bayonet in their showcase... I must have asked them if I could see it too many times. Eventually, I made a trip into town early one morning just to buy it.
The OKC 3S bayonet was intended to fit on an M16 or M4 rifles where the distance from the muzzle to the bayonet lug isn't specific, because the muzzle brake/flash hider can vary in length. For the bayonet to fit properly on the Mossberg 590A1, I needed to put an additional O-ring under the magazine tube cap, just to offer an additional 1/8" of length. The O-ring on the mag tube cap is still required to stifle rattle, but she is secure.
The National Soldier Factory has another location in the old Rebel's Roost Antiques barn on route 30, outside of Gettysburg on the way to York. They have an original army issue Lan-Cay M9 bayonet there that I have had my eye on for some time. I just might have to pick it up soon to complete the collection!
My Mossberg shotgun has a bayonet lug just behind the magazine tube cap. So, of course, I had to find a bayonet for it!
I purchased this authentic issue M7 Vietnam era bayonet at a flea market hosted by The Rebel's Roost at The Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg. Dude had $90.00 on it, but asked if he would take $80.00 and it was a done deal!
She installed and held firm without fail, but as I read online before purchasing, they weren't exactly made for each other, so there was a little loose rattling and I was worried that this movement would create wear and scratching.
So, a little rubber O-ring on the magazine tube cap was the answer. With that in place as shown, there is zero movement and no noise from rattling!
My next firearms acquisition was my shotgun. I bought a Mossberg 590A1 from Redding's Hardware. She's purely tactical. Not much good for skeet, trap, or ducks, but she'll clear a room! Since I didn't have it mounted on anything, I installed my Sig Sauer Romeo green dot optic to the picatinny rail.
The heavy barrel of the 590A1 didn't require a heat shield. She really doesn't convey that much heat. But I like to accessorize!
The ghost ring sights of the 590A1 prevent sliding a regular steal heat shield onto the barrel, so I found a fiberglass/polymer heat shield from a little family owned online company called Shot Gun Heat Shields. (https://www.shotgunheatshield.com/)
These come with a lifetime warranty and are very economical. It absolutely will NOT scratch your barrel and they look pretty damn stylish.
(Just to note: My shotgun is on the tripod for pictures only. I would not try to, or ever need to fire my shotgun from the tripod!)
