If she was honest, Y/N knew when he came back that she could never really hate Zuko. No matter how hard she tried, how badly she wanted to, and no matter what he did. And she missed him, she really missed him. Y/N missed the stupid things he would say in the dead of night, the feeling of sleeping beside him, the comfortable silence between them when there were no words to be said. 

Of course, this didn’t stop her from faking her anger towards him each time he came around. Of course it hadn’t been entirely fake, Y/N wouldn’t deny that she still found it unbelievable that he thought siding with Azula was ever a good idea, or betraying his uncle— who’s location was now unknown. Y/N had contemplated searching for him, though she had a feeling that he’d escaped the Fire Nation unscathed.

Y/N was fairly sure Iroh wasn’t even upset with Zuko, though he seemed convinced that his uncle now despised him. Y/N had a feeling both she and Iroh had forgiven him, and the moment he promised to never abandon her again, Y/N knew Zuko had changed for the better. But that didn’t end the seething rage she felt whenever she saw him. Zuko had still decided to abandon her and Iroh, and go back to his horrid father and Azula. This was a fact she had forgave, yes, but forgotten? Y/N sincerely doubted she ever would.

Though they were on decent terms, Y/N couldn’t deny that she still attempted to avoid him. Mostly because they have yet to define what exactly they were, and if he asked, Y/N truly didn’t know what her answer would be. Were they friends? Maybe at one point she could’ve said yes to that, but they had become a little more than friends in Ba Sing Se, and after the events there, Y/N felt as though she couldn’t even call him that. 

Then there was the title of boyfriend, and Y/N didn’t know if she ever considered him that. Especially now that he stands before her once more, awkwardly shifting the weight between his feet, eyes avoiding hers as he speaks, “I saw Mai.”

What is the hardest part about being Fire Lord?

This question was asked pretty often whenever people met Zuko, and he was pretty sure they were expecting an answer along the lines of ‘running a whole nation’ or something similar. And Zuko wouldn’t deny that running the nation, handling the uprisings, the assassination attempts, the diplomacy, the idiocy, the battles and the violence, was hard. It was really hard. But if Zuko was honest, the hardest part of his job?

Working with his Ex. 

Seeing as Zuko was an heirless Fire Lord, and he sincerely doubted his Uncle wanted to be the ruler of the nation at this point, much less abandon his tea shop, he needed a second in command that doubled as a general, diplomat and preferably friend. The obvious choice at the start of his rule was his then friend, soon to be girlfriend, Y/N L/N.
