This is the explanation for how I do my Bubbalub genotyping. I’m aware it’s not perfect, but it works for my purposes and I’m constantly working to improve it.
Buckle in, cause this is going to be a long post.

The first two letters are the base color, in the primary colors that would mix to it. B = Blue, R = Red, and Y = Yellow. Lowercase is recessive and would be less of that color in the mix. So if I wanted a Blue-green, I could write that as By.
But that’s not enough variation for me, so the next two sets of alleles also influence color. It’s splits into [undertone, target]. (Also for some reason I use C = Blue, V = Red, and J = Yellow for this section) This allows for neutral tones (complementary undertone to base color), more detailed variation, and when the undertone alleles are both recessive, lightening. Depending on the base color, the [undertone, target] might not actually affect anything, but can pop up in the offspring.
So using our example; BBCjCc, we have Blue[BB] with Blue-green undertones[Cj] targeting blue lightly[Cc]. I have then interpreted those results as a Turquoise.
The next set influences the mouth. Two dominant alleles [O,U] mean an underbite, one dominant and one recessive[O,u] is an overbite, and two recessive alleles [o,u] means no mouth.
The second two sets of alleles determines the type of limb. AaFf = Fin, Aaff = Frill, aaFf = wing, aaff = none. When there’s two dominant A alleles [AA] then there are double fins/frills.
For Horns/Ears, two dominant alleles [HH] means ears, two recessive alleles [hh] means none, and one of each [Hh] means horns.
For back spines, two dominant alleles [SS] means rounded spikes, two recessive alleles [ss] means none, and one of each [Ss] means pointy spikes.
For tail fins, two dominant alleles [TT] means split tail fins, two recessive alleles [tt] means none, and one of each [Tt] means united tail fin.
For size, two dominant alleles [GG] means large, two recessive alleles [gg] means small, and one of each [Gg] means medium.
So our example
BBCjCcOuAaFfHhssTtgg
is a turquoise bubbalub, with an overbite, fins, horns, no spines, united tail fin, and small in size
That all I have currently, but I’ll update this post as things change and grow!

I’ve recently gotten obsessed with Megan Lapp’s Bubbalubs, and decided I needed to genotype them out, and make families!
I’m not a geneticist, but it’s been really fun! I’ve end up with combinations I wouldn’t have thought of! I have sets of alleles for the different crochet elements and colors.
So far it’s mostly been planning designs, because I’m a slow crocheter.
