Little idea I thought of for the au. Magical girls become unrecognizable due to their magic changing their eyes. Same thing goes to those who gets temporarily transformed as well. Very small change but still effective. Other than making them unrecognizable, it also makes them approachable which can help in building trust with others as well as power.
