8-ish years ago I stumbled across a niche DC character called Impulse and decided to read his solo run. I was capital O obsessed. I was really into DC for a while until other hyperfixations came along. A couple months ago I watched James Gunn’s Superman and it made me remember how much I love this little guy. As fate would have it, only a couple weeks earlier I’d just happened to have found a volume of the first 12 issues of Impulse 1995 at my local comic shop, so I started my re-read. Over the past couple months I’ve been reading Bart’s appearances chronologically, reliving classic moments, remembering stuff I’d forgotten, and learning stuff I never knew before. When I was 13 and didn’t know I was neurodivergent I couldn’t fully express why I related to Bart so much, but now at 21 I can. I didn’t realise how much it impacted me to read a story about an AuDHD-coded superhero from the future struggling to understand the world and be understood by the people around him. Like… that’s me. I’m reconnecting with this character after so much time and so much in my life has changed, and it’s brought me so much joy. I can actually point out specific moments and things Bart says and does and understand why I relate to him, and it makes me appreciate him as a character even more. I really hope he’ll show up in the DCU and I have faith James Gunn will do him justice. I hope Impulsepoint gives him the good writing that he deserves but has been sorely lacking recently (Don’t let me down Mark Waid). Anyway tldr I love Bart Allen :)
