Garnet scoffed and rolled her eyes, shaking her head at him. âIsnât that bubbly? That sounds awful,â Garnet gave at his joke, smacking him lightly in the shoulder and then watching him lift the bottle to his lips, pulling at it like a pro. Which, really, he probably was; she couldnât see being friends with Damon and Celeste without doing some drinking - she couldnât see being a soldier without it, period. On the other hand, sheâd never seen Brooks drunk; sheâd never seen him have more than one, maybe two, at a party. âEnjoy?â Garnet echoed, incredulous; âYou want me to enjoy drinking poison-flavoured fire? Youâre on drugs,â she said, laughing as she reached to grab the bottle back. âNo, Iâll drink it while holding my breath and just hope I donât choke and die,â she added, pressing her lips back to the bottle and taking another swig, then setting it down with a clang. âTerrible,â Garnet decided aloud, laying back as the liquor moved through her, languid in a way she wasnât used to. She hummed, rolling on her side to face him and stretched her legs, pointing her toes as she faced him.
âSo, Iâm pretty sure Damonâs in love with you,â she commented, shifting to prop her temple against the ball of her palm, elbow on the roof. She was kidding, mostly; Brooks seemed to be the only person Damon had any drive to be around these days; in fact, he was a little obsessed with him, Garnet thought. More obviously than she was, at least; he tended to hang around Brooks like a lost puppy, which Garnet would find endearing if the man wasnât such a dick. It wasnât a judgement she made lightly - Garnet tried not to classify people so quickly, but heâd actively been a prick to her on more than one occasion, now, and as far as she was concerned he had one more chance before the label stuck. âYou into that?â She added, breaking into a laugh and dropping from her propped position onto her back.
âIt is awfulâ He confirmed. Alcohol was generally not really a good tasting thing --- unless you were into bitter he stuff that burns down your throat. It was more a thing of getting used to, at least in Brooks case. Once he admit to himself that it was time to finally grow up and act like an adult, he believed that the reason he was drinking changed from the wrong reasons to the right oneâs. It was arguable, actually. If you were drinking to let loose and cause even worse mischief than sober --- or to drown the nightmares away, the bad thoughts and memories that haunted him during sleepless nights. He didnât think of himself as an alcoholic (at least not in the same sense as Flynn), but on the other hand, there was no time and nerves to waste on things like this. They didnât really seem important enough when there were so much worse things happening. Brooks himself was fine. He was good, he was doing the best he could and that was alright for him. In whichever way it was possible, didnât matter.
Garnet took another sip, and he couldnât hide the grin forming on his face at her expression. Feeling relieved that she didnât even like it as much. It was better for her, and most certainly proved his point once more that she was truly a light in this dark place. The bottle was back brought to his mouth once more. The liquid content invaded his mouth but Brooks couldnât hide the surprise at Garnetâs comment; to an extent he actually spit everything back out again, turning over to face her. âWhat? Really?â Damon was truly a bother for Brooks. There were so many reasons he was trying to avoid him without much result, but looking at it this way he had never thought about before. âI donât think he is. Heâs just⌠lonely.â He explained with a shrug, once more taking a drag back from the bottle again before settling it down. This time making sure the content went down itâs way and not out again. It was no surprise Garnet believed that on second thought, but there was a reasonable explanation to it though. âI donât think he has anyone else.â Which was the main reason Brooks actually decided to bear it instead of confronting Damon with the truth. He felt pity towards the man. âWhy the conclusion though?â Once more his focus went back to Garnet, not really wanting to waste his time talking about Damon, he added. âSo...  you have a special sense of who is in love with who? Tell me more.â
Had Brooks always been so brazen? Kris snorted, watching the Silver walk by without noticing his lightened pockets. When you had so much, she supposed, a handful of Tetrarchs were really just leaves on a tree.
âYouâre gonna get yourself executed if you keep that up, man,â she said, nodding towards the stolen wallet. They shouldnât be taking any chances, not when surrounded by so many Silvers. But she sort of knew what he meant; it was hard not to. To push the limits, to get the adrenaline running through her blood - what was the point in coming here if it was just to play silly carnival games? âAnd Iâm good with just beer ân whisky. I donât fuckinâ trust that weird coloured shit. Donât even wanna know how they made it that green, looks dangerous. You sure gettinâ shitfaced is a good idea, anyhow? Seems like youâve been gettinâ yourself in enough trouble with the Silver ladies when youâre sober. Mustâve been a while, for you to sink so low,â she grinned, glancing behind them. The woman with the bright, pale hair was nowhere in sight but Kris was distinctly under the impression that Brooks had been up to something.
The idea of any of them visiting the kissing booths was absurd to her. Didnât they always complain about how up themselves the Silvers were? Yet sheâd seen more than a few of the Guard queueing up for a kiss. It didnât bother Kris, though you wouldnât catch her dead kissing a Silver. Brooks, though, could kiss who he liked.
Stealing from people was something he had learned ever since he had been a young boy. Reid and Brooks were always up to some mischief, and if they hadnât taught each other early enough how to steal, they wouldnât have half the good life they had in the end. Sure, parents were there to watch out for the kids and make sure they had enough to eat, but it never seemed like a mistake to go get whatever they needed themselves. Until today he was still good at pick-pocketing, and even better noticing when someone else would do that to him. Other people seemed too clumsy, but the Faulkner brothers used to be smooth and nonchalant with those things.
He gave a shrug to her warning. Too confident in himself to believe differently. It was much easier when they were two doing that in a team but he found no issue now doing it on his own either. âDonât worry about it. Iâm even better at not getting caught.â He returned to her first comment, listening on further he felt slightly uncomfortable. Unsure what to answer. Yes, he wanted to have fun. But not to the extent that Kris noticed it. Fuck. Why did anyone even watch out for what he was doing? Although he wasnât sure who she was referring to (granted, it wasnât only one girl he kissed, and more he just hung out with), he felt slightly ashamed, unsure to give any kind of reaction --- or better not. For now he was actually even out of excuses.
âI was just trying to fit in⌠besidesâŚâ Almost he spilled that he had been recognized from the last time. Which would be actually a great excuse; but sure shouldnât be heard by anyone. Now he needed to come up with something else quick to save his ass. âBesides, they came to me first.â
You really still think Iâm like one of your servants.
What a ridiculous question.
âYouâre a Red.â It was their duty to serve. Romulus, as a member of the High Houses, was entitled to their bowed heads. He was was owed their quick accommodation of his demands. And usually his wishes were granted without issue. Usually. However, this oneâ
âBut youâre not like the others, are you?â This man who stood solid and without a bowed spine, who insolently challenged with a steady gaze and unwavering eye contact. And Romulus never bothered to sift through the Reds he encountered, all of them blending into one jumbled and unrecognizable mass. Yet this oneâbrazenly stepping forward to be recognized, Romulus regarded him as he would a strange and peculiar animal. âYou want to prove you have a spine. If this isnât the most bizarre thing Iâve seen today.â
Of course a comment like this would follow quick. But Brooks was not the one obeying to any Silverâs wishes. He refused to play along their rules and act like a slave. He had his own mind. And although he didnât state what he thought often, he would not bite back now. Yes, staying out of trouble was one thing. But he sure intended to stay out of it and not provoke. But jumping like a puppy at any Silverâs commands? Nope.
He remained in his position. Standing tall --- although he was quite a bit shorter than the other guy, who was clearly taller than most people he had seen. Not even the stern gaze could intimidate him enough to even blink --- yet look away. âI have no need to prove anything. Iâm not going to challenge you.â Powertrip much? Against their abilities he didnât easily stand a chance, that was clear. Neither was he really wanting to burst with the other into a fight now.Â
âBizarre?â Brooks shrugged, âI call it normal.â It couldnât be true that all those ignorant fucks really believed Redâs were nothing but working machines, had no mind of their own to think and no mouth to speak out loud.
Sabina pondered his words, holding tight at the top with a bit of a false indignation settling into her features along with her smile. Just as sheâd started early, sheâd descended late, inching her way down after him. âI can lose fairly,â she insisted, though the sentiment was spoken with a touch of humor, too. âEven if I didnât have to today.â Once her feet were back firmly on the ground, she took her time undoing the knot that had held her skirts up from her ankles and allowed herself a laugh. âYouâre quite the gentleman, Dorian, but Iâll never say no to a prize. Letâs get something we can share though, please? Iâm afraid I wouldnât have beaten you without the slight advantage.â
Either way this was unfair or a fair game, he had lost or won, it was fun. He couldnât deny that this second identity was not too bad as long as he didnât feel in danger. It was true, Silvers had a nicer life. But it didnât make him wish he was one of them. He merely wished that things were different instead. That it was normal the two of them just  talked like this, had fun. At the same time he was fully aware that if Sabina was aware of the truth, she wouldnât even spare a glance. But there was no place for bitter thoughts now. âSharing? Hmm⌠Donât tell me this is your way of asking me to do some cute couple activity.â He teased, observing her reactions. âLike what? Do you have suggestions?â

Quit, oh, at this point he wished he had retired, with a reputation still intact and something else to do with his life.Â
âBested,â Gerard said stiffly, resisting the urge to punch this Red in the face for the sole reason that he, Brooks, had brought up this topic.Â
Or maybe Gerard had, but Brooks was the one insulting him now, wasnât he?Â
âMhmmm.â Sensitive topic much? He sensed the anger quick, it was a clear sign of wounded pride and hurt ego of so many men. To his own luck, Brooks never cared too much about these things. A reputation was not important; doing the right thing was. For now he had no other questions to ask, neither did he feel like apologizing. After all, he had just tried to keep the conversation going.

Kiss again?Â
A squeak of a gasp escaped her as he pulled her closer; her field of vision was entirely occupied by his face, his breath upon her silver skinâ her blush had grown so intense that she was sure she might glow should she be put in direct sunlight. Her fingers stilled over his jaw, eyes darting from his lips to his eyes as she trapped her own bottom lip between her teeth. âIt depends?â she repeated; on whether she was brave enough to do so or not, she figuredâ and she wanted to be brave, as heâd said he thought she was. A nervous smile flitting across her flushed face, Lucretia nodded, voice bubbling with laughter, âI think a second kiss wouldnât be a bad thing.â Was it horribly obvious how desperately she wanted to kiss him again? She could only assume soâ but he hadnât laughed her off yet, and that was a good sign.Â
Eyes falling to his lips again, she began to lean forward, heart thrashing between her ribs and breath caught in her throat. She could almost taste the honey and cinnamon as her eyes began to flutter closedâ but a voice ringing out, calling her name, from within the crowd startled her away from him. She jumped, the voice a piercing reminder that they were not aloneâ and that surely, somewhere, one of the Calores needed her for something. âOh,â she pulled back, hands still on his shoulders, utterly flustered by the interruption, âI-Iâm sorry; I have toâ thatâs me.â Stupid, stupidâ he knows itâs you.Â
In a gust of braveness, as she stood, she leaned down to place a short but satisfying kiss upon his lips, fingers lingering over his. âI hope I can see you again,â she muttered, breathless, as she pulled away once more, her name ringing out over the din of the crowd once more, pitched and agitated, for she was clearly taking too long. âGoodbye, Dorian.âÂ
And with that, she turned on her heel and hurried off toward the sound of the voice, offering him a blushing glance once more as she retreated, fingers brushing with thrill over her lips.Â
Neither of them seemed to be against another kiss. Leaning towards her, following this time her guidance. He could feel her warm breath against his skin already, the taste of her lingering on his mouth, getting closer with each second --- as the two were interrupted by a voice. Brooks wouldnât have felt disturbed by it, he could have just ignored it with ease, but Lucretia jumped back and he shifted slightly backwards, granting her space.Â
âMhmm.â He nodded at her explanation, slight disappointment marking his features as he needed to let her get up, his own hands falling away from her hips and being pulled back towards himself. Although he would have rather kept them on her petite figure, caressing her back while they would enjoy another kiss. âItâs fine.â He reassured her. Their lips met again, shortly for the goodbye kiss. Brooks had wished he could drag it out for longer --- but her name was being called once again, this time sounding even more demanding than before. A huff fell from his mouth, but he offered a grin towards Lucretia, watching her leave.
For a few more moments he remained sitting on this spot, his eyes following the girl until she was completely out of his sight. Had they really gone so far out of the crowd? Surprise they heard the shouting. Now alone the moment faded, the effects of the kiss faded and the bliss slowly disappeared into thin air. Not that he wasnât satisfied, but reality was a big slap into his face. âFor fucks sake.â He muttered, hands clenching into fists as he got up, making his way back to the celebration again. Hopefully Lucretia would need to attend duty for longer and stay away at least for tonight. From then on, he would make sure not to cross her path again. The risk was too big. What if she started searching for him? Found out finally that he wasnât even extinct? Not that he believed she could track his steps back to Naercey, but he surely had screwed up his secret identity tonight even more.
End.
Leon watched Brooks carefully, making sure to be subtle about it. Half out of concern, half out of confusion. Sometimes he still didnât understand why people wanted to confide in him, thought he would be able to help them in some way. He tried sometimes, he really did. But it was something heâd rather do quietly or not at all. Something heâd rather no one else draw attention to, rather not put too much stock into. Otherwise someone like Aurora would come around asking questions he didnât want to answer.
It was a difficult thing to balance. Trying not to get attached to people, trying to have nothing holding him here in any way, shape, or form. But also being unable to fucking help it when he saw someone struggling. Whether it was silently helping someone fix their fighting form or bandaging an injury as best he could so they didnât do it improperly. Helping a girl through physical therapy because sheâd almost been blown to pieces, and he knew too well how fucking hard that was to come back from.
It seemed the more he pushed people away; the more they wormed their way in.
Maybe thatâs why his expression lost its edge as he stared at Brooks, at the way he glared at Damon. Nothing about his body language said he was at ease, like most of them were, and his question only confirmed it. Leonâs expression remained neutral as he stood, nodding his head in the opposite direction of the small group near them. âYeah,â he said, tone lacking its usual punch. âLetâs go.â
Leon must have been so far the only one that truly had doubts about Brooksâ feelings towards Damon. Everyone else believed them to be the closest friends, sometimes believed Brooks to be just like the other. Time would prove them differently, but in the end, it was still what people thought. That they were close. Damon himself thought so too, but for Brooks, their situation was completely different and the little bit of sympathy he had left for him was nothing but pity and guilt.
Sure, it was always a struggle to chose to help Damon or not. Today he had left him behind and wanted to have fun. Turns out, now that he was seeing him again, the guilt was bigger than ever before towards the man. He had easily left him in the middle of their mutual enemies. All of that for entirely selfish reasons. Nothing else. He felt relief wash over him as Leon agreed, with a sigh he got up from his seat, waiting for the other guy to join him so they could vanish back into the crowds and mix up with the Silverâs. Anything would be better than to stare at Damon any longer and feel the guilt grow. Guilt, that he wasnât sure if he should be feeling or not.
swelle:
Spurred on by enthusiasm of party-goers below, the intermittent shouting and cheering in the square (though she knew full-well it wasnât for her), Sabina continue to scale her way skywards. The top her climb was so close, the steel frame holding his rope and hers as the finish line, and she shot her hand up to catch it â just a second before Dorian. It was almost as if the action had been choreographed, causing Sabina to burst into laughter despite the breathlessness as she held tight at the top. âI know I promised a fair game, but my head start was an accident, truly. Youâre an excellent climber.â
He could have sworn in was the same moment they reached the top, but the alarm went off at Sabinaâs side, and inwardly he cursed himself for losing. But the next moment he already turned over to the young girl with a grin. âYeah⌠Youâre lucky Iâm a fair loser --- unlike you apparently.â He teased, now starting to climb back down again and fully submit to his failure. âDid we actually propose a deal? I sure forgot...â Brooks played along, acting out the bitter loser. But eventually, he would still give in to something. âCome on, hurry. Let me get you some candy like any fair loser would.â
It was admittedly the most fun she had up until this point at the carnival, and she almost cursed herself for finding herself being chased by a Red. Laelia was never one to judge by blood, but her new surroundings caused her to play as if her own views were the same. She sourced that as the reason she took their game behind the tents of the carnival for a privacy she desired. She lingered ahead of him a few steps until his words drew her in so quickly that she almost turned around too suddenly. She did, however, pause in her current position until he caught up with her with a small distance now between them. âHere you are again with more talk and no play. I thought you were coming to finish what you evidently desire.â
With those simple words leaving her lips, Laelia ran her hand back and against his forearm before turning herself towards him. âPlease tell me I didnât sneak away from my guard for nothing.â Here she was again with the teasing, fingers trickling up his shirt with a light grasp at the fabric covering his chest. âIf you do not kiss me now, you will never get a chance to kiss me again.â Her tongue ran over her lips before pressing together, sighing a few moments later of anticipation. ââand if you fail to impress, I am afraid I might scream for a red assaulting me. Up for that challenge?â She was on the edge of her metaphorical seat with a small amount of sweat building in her clenched fist. She wanted him to take that challenge and prove to her that Reds could just as easily hold their own against Silvers, even the prince.
She seemed as if she hadnât expected him following. Did she really think after that teasing he would just walk away and not knowing what could have happened. Well if, then she was wrong. Brooks was very determined to find out what exactly could be happening, and how far it would go. He still didnât know if it was the alcohol or the atmosphere, or it was just her alluring aura --- and at this point, honestly even he stopped thinking about it. As if consequences werenât a thing.
No reply from him yet, but clear amusement dancing on his featured as he got closer to her, and she did just the right amount of towards him to have the space vanish entirely. Cold fingers ran up his arm, eyes following. There it was. Oh she knew he would be following. She wanted this --- but he needed this. Now so close to her he only noticed the big amount of height difference between them and how much he needed to lower his head to reach her lips. But instead of doing so, he let her finish her little teasing game, talking, touching, whatever she wanted to do to just excite him more for what was coming. Then finally, his arms moved around her lithe waist and he had her easily picked up from the ground. Not bothering to pin her against a wall --- she was so light he could easily hold her. Lifting her face higher to his own, a grin noticeable still on his lips. He drew in one last breath, responding quick. âWell I would very much like to avoid that risk.â The next moment his lips were on hers, pressing fiercely against her mouth, teeth lightly scraping over the soft flesh in demand for her lips parting for easier access.

The tall man looked unnecessarily comfortable without a shirt on, as if he spent most of his time walking around the market in nothing but a fitted pair of pants. She thought whatever booth he worked at would be outstandingly popular if he did. Perhaps he knew that. She blushed, her cheeks turning ever so slightly paler as she raised her eyes to look at his.Â
âPerhaps not.â She responded, her smile matching his. âI really am sorry, although I do think the girls behind you arenât. Would you like me to find you a spare shirt?â
After having spent a good amount of time with Lucretia so far he could easily tell when a Silver was blushing. The way their cheeks got paler instead of the red taint, the slight shimmer barely visible, but he believed to see something when he looked close enough. It made him grin. âIf you donât mind, I wouldnât decline the offer. Especially not if it makes you uncomfortable.â Brooks hinted subtly at the blush, that he head easily detected. Plus, he would be an idiot to say no to free clothes from Silvers. Days like this had proven his formal few pieces as quite useful.
