Racing game development log - Day 28:
I added a item display, to show if you are waiting for an item or what item you have.
I also added a new item:
Rocket Wheel - Gives the racer a speed boost and makes them ignore offroad for 1.25 seconds, subject to change.
Accidentally caused the Rapture with my collision code lol

Some conceptual work on something cooking. Engine is in progress by someone I genuinely believe can pull it off (groundwork laid but nothing to show yet), but I don't wanna get hopes up just yet. We've talked about this project for awhile but we are both in a much better position to make a stab at it.
So I took a few days to update one of my previous projects: Cute Mold, a mold growth and evolution simulation. Yep, mold 🦠
Now the world is bigger, and the molds are more complex and interesting. Plus, there are light sources with cool names!
It's free. Plot twist near the end of the video (video sped up 3x). https://erytau.itch.io/cute-mold
can you chill out
STOP
thanks man

hey, sorry if this is rude, but as a new indie game developer, do you have any advice on how to stay motivated? i don't expect you to answer, but it would be appreciated.
Not rude at all!
For learning, for me it was more about figuring out how to get things on screen, and then getting them to do what I wanted. Like instead of planning a whole game or just doing tutorials, I was thinking more "how do I make a robot walk? How do I give it a rocket launcher?" It takes a bit longer piecing together things from multiple searches, but for me it kept me going (and learned faster I think). I made so many "toys" and prototypes and when one was "fun" I made it a game.
For actually finishing my game, a big help was alternating "fun" and "I hate this" jobs. I hate menus. Like really hate menus. Its boring, its tedius, but also very important. I love doing npc behavior, or adding weapons. So if I spent a week burning out on a menu, I might focus on weapons or new enemies til I was enjoying it again.
Also lastly, it will sound cheesy but you have to constantly remind yourself its ALL helping you get better at it. If you cancel an idea or throwout some part of it you spent a lot of time on, it was all learning! Every prototype is learning. Before I finished Broadside Renegades I think I had maybe 3 projects I spent months on thinking "this will be my first full game!" I actually used a menu from one as my start menu. I made homing missiles in an older project so it wasnt hard when I needed them later.
Hope any of that is helpful and keep going! Remember it should be fun, even if its also hard!
Bugs for a thing I’m playing with, but in the planning stages again for another group project (other one fell through for now)
Our indie Soulslike has come a long way since 2024
i cant belive i managed to make a game with such tonal whiplash >:]
