Let's look back to younger Cedar! He's going through it. Needs some good old fashioned late night porch therapy.

____
It was December, close to Christmas. But the air was warm and light like late summer. Cedar stared out over the field in the darkness, nothing between him and the horizon. There wasnât a sound around him but the rustle of the cool wind over the tall grass. He looked up to the sky overhead, unnaturally vibrant and dazzling stars danced in constellations he didnât recognize.
A screen door swung shut behind him. He turned to see a house standing alone, old wood and a faded red door cast in the welcoming orange glow of a buzzing porch light.
An old man settled into a rocking chair with a mug in each hand. He set one down on the floor next to him, and the other on a small side table beside a rickety porch swing.
He didnât look at Cedar.
Cedar made his way to the porch steps.
âIs that for me?â He asked, fingers following chipped paint and splintered wood.
âIf yâ want it.â The old man replied.
Cedar looked into the mug on the end table; steam drifted out of pitch black coffee. It smelled like itâd been made over a campfire. Somehow, that unfamiliar night sky swirled through it like cream.
âAm I asleep right now?â Cedar asked.
âIâm sure you are, somewhere.â The old man answered.
Cedar looked at the old man, then back down to his coffee. He sat down on the porch swing and pulled his feet up under him.
Neither one of them spoke for a while. Cedar watched the empty field in silence. The old man lifted his mug off the floor, took a sip, and set it back down.
âYâ come to see me just to sit?â He asked.
Cedar looked over at the old man. He still didnât look at Cedar.
ââŚI donât know.â Cedar answered after a moment. He pulled a blanket off the back of the swing to cover his legs. âNothing important enough to be here.â
âMust feel important.â The old man answered. He lifted his mug off the ground, took another sip, and set it down again. âTâcome all the way out here.â
The silence stretched on for a moment longer.
âI just donât wanna waste your time with it.â
âI ainât got nowhere to be.â
Cedar looked down at his hands, at the dark hair just starting to creep up the backs of his hands. He wondered if people still thought his hands looked feminine.
âI justâŚâ He started, folding his hands over the top of the blanket. âWhat if this isnât right?â
The old man didnât say anything. Cedar didnât want him to.
âI mean, I just started T and I⌠I mean Iâve wanted this for so long. But now that I have it I just feelâŚâ He hesitated. Self hatred felt heavy on his tongue. It felt wrong to admit. âI feel gross. I feel awkward, and clunky, and my facial hair hurts like hell when itâs growing in. And Iâm self conscious all the time. Iâm just realizing how Iâve never, really related to people before this. Itâs like Iâm starting from scratch. Itâs like Iâm a kid again. I feel too young.â
The old man raised his eyebrows. One leg crossed over the other and he reached down for his mug again.
âI mean. Iâm 19.â Cedar added sheepishly. âI am young. I know that. It just feels like no one else is as young as me. It feels like everyone else knows where theyâre going. Andââ
Cedar gripped the blanket tighter. His voice tightened in his throat. âI know Iâm not wrong. But what if I get to the end, like, five years down the line and I donât like it? Then Iâm like, halfway through my twenties? Halfway through my twenties and I have to start over, I have to figure out something else.â
He looked out over the old manâs land. Darkness swallowed the landscape only a few yards past the porch. It felt like they were the only people alive.
âI just, I know Iâd never go back. I know Iâd never go back. I donât want to detransition, or change anything, it's justâŚâ His voice was soft and small, his hands gripped the blanket tighter to keep from shaking. âItâs hard right now. What if it doesnât get better?â
He lifted the collar of his shirt to wipe his eyes, looking up to see he was in the passenger seat of the old manâs truck. It was bright out, and the windows were down. The wind was blowing noisily through the cab, and the sun was setting behind them in a way that it glared off the face of the radio and kept Cedar from checking the time. The old man drove with his hands at the top of the steering wheel.
âDoes it feel right?â The old man asked.
Cedar blinked, looking up at him. The old manâs hat cast a stark shadow over his eyes. Cedar noticed the cigarette hanging between his fingers.
Cedarâs voice threatened to waver if he spoke again too soon, but he cleared his throat and spoke anyway. âUh. No. It feels right⌠where are we going?â He fumbled for a switch for his window along the handle of the door, finally looking over to see the crank sitting lower on the door.
âWoah,â Cedar wiped his eyes, leaning down to roll up the window. âHow old is this truck? You keep it running yourself?â
âShe doesnât give me much trouble. My boys take care of her when she does though.â
He didnât answer the other questions. Cedar decided not to press it. He rolled up the window and stopped halfway, just enough to keep the wind from drowning out the conversation. He leaned his head against the doorframe, watching the road curve and straighten in front of them as they drove.
âWhere are we going?â He asked again.
âJust wanna show you something.â The old man answered.
âCan I lean my seat back âtil we get there?â
The old man gave a hum of approval. Cedar searched along the side of his seat for the lever and let his seat fall all the way back. He was standing again when he opened his eyesâthis time at the quarry he used to spend his summers. He hadnât been back since his senior year. Transitioning had made it too uncomfortableâhis binders never mixed well with swimming, and he could never shake the feelings of strangersâ eyes on him.
This time, no one noticed him, he stood like a ghost in the shallows of the water. People around him screamed and laughed and shared drinks out of cheap looking coolers. Music echoed off the walls of the quarry. Cedar could feel the sun on his chest.
âHowâs that feel?â The old manâs voice asked beneath the noise.
Cedar reached a hand up, closing his eyes and letting his fingers spread flat over his bare chest. He felt the ridges of new scars, not yet healed and not yet ready for the sunlight, warm under his fingertips and soaked in light against some future surgeonâs wishes.
âIt feels right.â He answered.
He opened his eyes again to find himself back on the old manâs porch. The field in front of him was filled with the soft blinking of floating fireflies, cicadas cried distantly, filling the space between Cedar and the horizon
He looked over his shoulder, the old man sat in his rocking chair with his empty mug in his hands. The porch swing rocked gently in the breeze.
âI have to go back soon.â Cedar said.
âSooner or later.â Time replied.
Cedar walked back to the porch swing, having a seat on the edge. The fireflies danced over the tall grass.

but it's true: Dimitri as whumpee if you think it's in-character for him? Otherwise whoever you think fits best/want to write most :)
Omg actually yeah I think this is in character, at least for younger Dimitri. So let's see younger Dimitri!
but itâs true: [character] has been known to fake being sick, but this time theyâre actually sick.
TWs: illness, fever, collapse, self-destruction
"I know you're lying to me. Again." Luis' voice sounded even and annoyed over the phone. "You did this last time we were doing this training, and then I got a report of you going to a movie while we were all marching in the hot sun."
"No, Luis, sir, I'm--" Dimitri tried, only to get cut off.
"I don't care if you're hungover. Everyone has to be there, or they'll see me in the training room. Again. I'll see you in two hours."
Luis hung up, and Dimitri was left staring at his phone. Eyes narrowing, rage started to replace the sting of betrayal. "Fine." He whispered to himself. "I'll march in the sun. I'll fucking do it. If he wants to give me the freezer later, I might even thank him."
With heat raging behind his eyelids and the knowledge that, technically, yes, it was his fault for trying to skip out on training the day after his twenty-first birthday a few months ago, Dimitri geared up. Every movement ached, and as he donned his long-sleeved gear he was already plotting his recovery day.
It was hell. Dimitri knew it would be hell. Their packs weighed as much as he did. The sun was unrelenting. The fabric of their clothes was breathable, but it was also black. They even had to keep their masks on. Endurance training was the official term, but Dimitri and Laredo had taken to calling it a Hell Hike.
He wanted to call out to Luis. To beg to lie down in the shade, just for a moment. There was no shade. There would be no sympathy from Luis. He was fueled by spite alone, but even that was waning under the intense heat.
Dimitri just couldn't seem to get quite enough air. His legs weren't as stable as usual. The ground was uneven. The heat beneath his casting mask was beyond stifling as sweat rolled freely down his face. Water didn't give any relief to the scratchiness in his throat. He really should've taken something before leaving their house.
But that would've defeated the purpose.
Up ahead, Laredo was swaying too. The ground was too uneven, more uneven than he remembered. Dimitriâs bag was heavier, somehow. It felt like his boots were too loose, too big. Why hadn't he let Luis check his temperature for himself? He couldn't have faked this sort of fever.
And then he was on the ground. The dirt pressed up against the conductive surface of his mask. He couldn't breathe.
"Shit--" Was that Valentina? That sounded like her. "Luis, sir! Man down!"
Boots sprinted over, and hands worked Dimitri's mask from his face. The rush of fresh air didn't help, even as his pack was unbuckled and lifted from his back. He still wheezed, face red and vision swimming.
"JoaquĂn, help me." Valentina's voice was above him, and her shadow blocked out the blinding light as he was carefully turned onto his back. Her bare, scar-smeared palm pressed to Dimitri's forehead and she jerked back. "Fuck--Luis, he's bad."
"Oh--Oh no." Luis? When did he get there? "He tried to tell me he wasn't feeling well this morning. I...I thought he was faking."
Another hand, larger this time, cupped Dimitri's face. "Can't fake that. If it's not fever, it's heatstroke. How far are we from base? He needs medical." Adriana. this time.
"I can carry him, we're an hour away, I think." Joaquin said. "Laredo, can you drive?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'll get us back in time."
"We'll be right behind..."
"Water..."
"Unbuckle..."
Dimitri didn't remember much after that. He was too hot, and then too cold, and then even colder, somehow. He couldn't get warm again. He wasn't allowed to be warm. Someone who sounded like Luis said he couldn't have a blanket, even as he shivered.
Someone who sounded like Luis apologized.
In the depths of his confusion, within his gut, Dimitri felt triumphant.
He could make an incredible war mage.
Would they let him? If he went through with this?
A different perspective on this piece! Mariano belongs to my beloved cowriter @crash-bump-bring-the-whumpâÂ

The light from the hallway shined on the linoleum floors. Miguel cast a stark shadow on the tiles. He stood over Mariano, watching the deep rise and fall of his chest as he slept. His fingers twitched; it would be so easy. Just one blaze, one hand at Marianoâs neckâheâd be dead not long after Miguelâs powerâs closed around his throatâ he wouldnât even be able to scream, would he? Itâd be done, heâd be gone.
They might look into it. They might investigate. But it could always be written off as an accidentâan electrical fire, faulty wiring from the outlet behind Marianoâs bed. Miguel had seen soldiers die under more suspicious circumstances before. It had always been covered up. It could be covered up again.
Miguel flinched at the heavy sound of approaching footfall. His breath caught in his throat, steps echoed through the hallway. He turned to watch the light under the door. The shadow of someoneâs uniformed march passed by on the other side.
He watched for more movement, waited for the moment theyâd pass by again. But outside, he heard the door at the end of the hallway swing open and slam shut again.
His shoulders dropped, he held back a sigh. He looked back down to Marianoâ Still asleep, flat on his back with his hands folded over his chest. He slept like a robot. He fought like one too. Everything he did was methodical and precise and absolutely emotionless.
Mariano would make an incredible war mage, if he let him get there.
Miguel tried to bring his magic to the surface; heat pulled itself through his veins. He held his trembling open palm above Marianoâs bed. He always shook when it went this far.
Wavering light danced at his fingertips. He stared down at Mariano. Efficient, unfeeling, robotic. Miguel could be that too. He could be that perfect soldier.
He could make an incredible war mage.
Would they let him? If he went through with this?
He curled his fingers into his palm, feeling the burn of his own magic as he stepped back. Another night, he told himself, maybe another night.

Whumpee loses their balance in the wild and rolls violently down a steep hill. By the time they reach the bottom, they have been so banged-up and bloodied that they can hardly move.
8 for the hurt/comfort ask game? My absolute favourite trope đ - whump-captain
Yes!! I can absolutely do this one for you! I ALSO love this trope!!
Prompts are from this ask game!!

TWs: blood. field surgery, stitches
Another request. Another mage not in their right mind. Mariano and Bastian knew the drill by now, and word had spread that the Kingslayer was going around, cleansing mages of the curses that drove them to madness. There was hope now, something to replace the fear that the title had carried with it before.
A big guy this time, with short hair and hands like Mariano's, incredibly friendly when he wasn't dangerous. Mariano had a feeling about who this one was.
Laredo.
There was no greeting, this time. They'd split up to look. Laredo was always so nice, eager to see you even when he'd had a terrible day.
Mariano didn't even see him coming. A hulking mass of a man charged out from the trees as they'd started looking around. Mariano barely had a chance to realize what he was seeing before he was rolling out of the way.
Laredo spun, his short hair messy and stuck to his forehead from sweat. He glared at Mariano, one lip curling in a snarl. Arms sculpted from bronze were solid bundles of tension, nearly trembling from the force of the mage's fury. Sun-bright magic sparked from bloody fingertips.
Mariano had no idea how long this frenzy had been going.
"Laredo." Mariano started. He held one gloved hand up, as though reaching for him. "I don't want to fight you."
Laredo smiled, a twisted version of the one Mariano was familiar with seeing. "Good. Then this won't take long."
Mariano was barely able to roll out of the way as magic burst forward from Laredo's lips, a searing ray of magic ripping past his head. "Bastian!" He shouted. Laredo was too much to handle on his own.
Laredo laughed, high and wild and cackling as he charged at Mariano. He was fast. Faster than Mariano remembered him being--he always was. He didn't even bother with his sword.
A fist slammed into the side of Mariano's head, sending him staggering with a shout. Laredo tackled him, one hand at his forehead and the other at his chest, pinning Mariano to the grass. Wide, dark eyes met Laredo's, bloodthirsty and unseeing. He wasn't really seeing Mariano.
Somehow, that didn't help.
Magic sparked at Laredo's teeth.
Magic sparked at his palms, popping painfully against Mariano's skin.
Just as Laredo's magic fully gathered at his lips, blinding Mariano fully, he yelped. A glittering mass flew into Laredo's side with a roar, effortlessly knocking him from Mariano. Mariano shuddered as he rolled to his hands and knees, watching Bastian pin Laredo face-down with a hand in his hair.
"We're never splitting up on a frenzied mage search again." Bastian snarled. He dug his claws into the back of Laredo's neck, slicing a line across. In a rough motion, he dug out the curse stone and tossed it aside. "I don't care how fucking well you know them," He continued, silver glare piercing through Mariano. "You're not doing that alone again."
Mariano was quiet as he pulled his suture kit from his bag. He crawled towards Bastian and the panting, limp, bleeding Laredo. He sat down at Laredo's side, struggling to thread the curved needle. The special thread just kept trembling too hard.
"Thank you." He finally said, as he got the needed threaded and started stitching Laredo up. "I...I agree."
Bastian's vicious pin let up just a little. Laredo didn't squirm as Mariano worked, closing his eyes in relief. "...I can leave." Laredo offered.
"No." Both Bastian and Mariano said at the same time.
"Shut up." Bastian continued, taking his knee from the small of Laredo's back and releasing the grip he had on his hair. "You'll just sleep on one side of me and Mariano'll sleep on the other."
Laredo laughed, weary and heavy. "Alright...alright. Sounds like a plan."

The air was oppressively hot, as heavy as his clothes that clung to himâsoaked with sweat as he made his way through the empty streets. Marcello gripped his bicep as he walked, checking every few blocks to see if the bleeding had stopped and only seeing fresh blood every time.
He tried to wipe sweat from his brow with his free hand, only managing to mix it with the blood that had dripped down his arm and covered his palm. He was nauseous from the heat, dizzy and out of breath. He felt like he should have already passed out. He wanted to stop and strip out of his binder, but he couldnât bring himself to slow down.
Something was following him. He could feel its gaze boring holes into the back of his skull. He had felt it the second heâd ended up here, something at his heels that he couldnât see when he looked over his shoulder.
He kept walking. He couldnât run. Whatever was following him⌠he knew it wanted that. Itâd turn this into a chase, and heâd be dead the second it caught him. He scanned the city around him, glancing down every alleyway as he passed it.
âIâll know it when I see it.â The only descriptor for the location he had. He cursed the fact he hadnât turned this job down in the first place. âHas an elevator⌠Know it when I see it.â
âKnow it when you see itâŚâ A voice parroted from behind him. Marcello slammed to a stop. In one motion he pulled his gun from his hip and turned off the safety as he whipped around. No one was behind him. Just the empty city blocks stretching on into forever.
âOkay,â Marcello whispered, turning to press his back against the wall as his pulse raced in his ears. âItâs fine, youâre alone. Youâre losing it, but youâre alone.â
âAloneâŚâ The voice hummed, somehow still from behind him. A cold hand reached out of the wall; Marcello watched, frozen in place, as featureless black fingers stretched from the shadow and curled around his shoulder. âYou have to know by now thatâs not true.â
Something like ink soaked into Marcelloâs clothes where it touched him. Marcello opened his mouth to speak, words catching in his throat as a second shadowy hand seized his wrist from the other side. The gun clattered to the ground, and whatever was behind him spun him to face the wall.
âStop! Fuck, whatââ He stared up at the wall, at two impossibly long arms stretching out from the brick. Â âWhat the fuck is this?â He tried to pull away, only for the hand on his shoulder to grip him tight, and the one around his wrist to suddenly yank him upward. Marcelloâs voice broke in a sudden terrified cry.
Two bright circles lit up against the shadowed wall, like someone had cut through the darkness from the other side. The circles blinked, staring back down at Marcello as a wide, paper cut-out smile spread to life beneath them.
âWhere are you going in such a hurry, little thing?â The warped, unholy shape of something close to human emerged from the wall. Empty eyes stared down at Marcello above a cartoonish grin. It was like some freakish shadow puppet come to life, Marcello could see the wall behind it through its expression. âThereâs nowhere for you to go down here.â
Marcello silently struggled for words. The creature stared back down at him, still smiling.
The eyes shifted, somehow. Moved across its face as it focused lower on Marcelloâs form. The hands holding him in place shifted again, forcing his injured arm into the air as the other arm wrapped like a rope around his neck.
âOhh! Looks like someone already got to you.â The creature laughed and twisted Marcelloâs arm further. It snaked down to look closer at the wound. âInteresting, they didnât do much to you at all.â
Marcello focused on using his free hand to fight the way the creatureâs arm tightened around his neck. It directed its gaze away from his arm again, watching his face with that wide eyed vacant smile as he struggled.
It tightened its grip, pulling him closer to the ground and smiling wider as his feet went out from under him.
âWhere were you going?â It asked, voice light and floating.
âFuck you.â Marcello wheezed.
âOh, not an answer.â Dark shadows wrapped around Marcelloâs legs, pulling him roughly to his knees on the concrete. He stared up with wide eyes to the creature looming over him. The arm around his neck tightened, squeezing tight as Marcelloâs vision blurred.
Additional tendrils of darkness, wherever they came from, spread across Marcelloâs face, covering his mouth and nose as the pressure around his neck released. His shoulders dropped and his chest heaved, trying desperately to pull in a breath out of reflex. The mask of darkness held tight, suffocating him and keeping him in place as the monster stared down at him.
âLetâs try this again.â It started, looming over Marcello as his lungs screamed for relief. âWhen I let you go, you tell me where you were off to.â
Marcello would have nodded if he could, but the creature seemed to take his fear as a yes. The shadows unwrapped from his face, and he fell to the ground with a desperate gasp for air.
He could feel it watching him, he swore he could even feel its smile. It tightened its grip around his legs, like it knew his next move was going to be for his gun.
âWell?â That sickeningly gentle voice teased from above. âDo you have an answer for me?â
âIâmâŚâ Marcello managed to prop himself up on his elbows. Whatever black ink the monster was made of dripped from his face and neck; it coated his wrists and mixed with the blood on his skin. âIâm working. Iâm looking for someone.â
âLooking for who?â The smile in its voice was clearâso content and proud of itself.
Marcello didnât look away from the concrete. He just shook his headâa silent refusal.
He could feel impossibly long fingers wind into his hair. The monster pulled his head back, he met paper cut-out eyes with a defiant glare.
âDo you know what Iâm made of?â The creature asked.
âSomething fuckingânasty?â Marcello could feel it soaking into his hair, threatening to drip down the back of his neck.
It pulled back on Marcelloâs hair again, guiding him to sit up on his knees.
âShadows.â It answered. âDarkness. Which means I fit wherever darkness does. I could crawl inside you right now. Tear you apart from the inside out. Pop you like a little balloon.â
He could feel cool darkness slipping between his parted lipsâit gripped his jaw as the other hand twisted in his hair, wrenching his jaw open and holding him in place.
âLooking for who?â It asked again. Marcello sat frozen, wide eyed, feeling like a rabbit in a wolfâs jaws. The creature gripped him tighter, drawing a strained noise from the back of his throat as it forced his mouth open wider.
âWho are they? Could they save you now, lost soul?â Marcelloâs voice caught in a whimper as his jaw was strained further. The darkness at his teeth crept closer to the back of his tongue.
Marcello tried to pull away and the creature released him, moving to hold him by the wrists as he coughed and sputtered and choked on the ink in his throat.
âGabriel!â He answered between strained coughs and gasps. âGabriel Rivas!â
He kept his eyes closed as he caught his breath, looking up in time to see the creature had fallen still. It stared at him with the same wide eyes, but its smile had vanished.
Tendrils of shadows unwound from Marcelloâs wrists and legs, and the creature backed fully away from him. He lunged for his gun, and it let him. When he rolled onto his back to take aim, it was standing where heâd left it, still watching him.
Marcello trembled, staring at the monster over the barrel of his gun. It stared back, empty eyes floating in a featureless black mass.
They watched each other silently. Neither one of them moved. Marcello didnât pull the trigger. A smile split the darkness before it finally spoke up again.
âYou were going the right way.â It motioned to the sidewalk beside them, âDonât let me stop you.â
â
Marcello didnât stop running. His chest screamed for mercy, his binder felt like it would crush his ribs if he kept going, but he didnât stop. He knew the shadow monster wasnât behind him anymore, but the feeling of being hunted lingered. He kept his gaze ahead, haunted by the screams that echoed through the city and followed him through the streets.
A skyscraper sat at the end of the street, double doors beckoning him as he picked up his pace. It looked generic, overwhelmingly indistinguishable from the buildings around it, but he was drawn towards it. As the double doors opened, the panic in his chest subsidedâeven as the walls around him stretched into impossibly tall obsidian slabs he felt secure.
He took a moment to slip out of his binder under his tank top, breathing in a deep sigh of relief as the pressure on his lungs was relieved. He let his binder rest around his neck and looked around him. The stranger said heâd know the place when he saw it. This was it.
can you write hypothermic andrew trying to goof around and get up to do things but he cannot stop shoving and nuzzling against whoever's trying to warm him up??? or maybe delirious and shivery with a fever and being teased by whoever is helping him?
I surprisingly got this out in one sitting at work!! I never do that. Here you go hone here's your cold Andrew.
Contains: hypothermia, discussion of kidnapping? (through jokes)
__
âAm I being kidnapped?â Andrew trembled, he could barely manage to speak with the way his teeth were chattering.
âNo, youâre not.â Snow answered. They draped another blanket over Andrewâs shoulders. Andrew felt like a little kid, wrapped up in three giant coats for a snow day. Except, he was freezing. And wearing a strangerâs dry clothes underneath. And he had almost died⌠Really he felt more like someone whoâd almost died in a snow storm, but âkid on a snow dayâ felt better to say.
âWhy not?â He stammered, still smiling. He leaned in to meet Snow halfway as they raised a mug of hot tea to his lips. He started talking again as soon as he swallowed. âIâd let that big guy kidnap me. If he wanted.â
Snow paused, there was a twitch to their brow that looked like confusion. They opened their mouth for a moment and closed it again, before leaning down to press their hand to Andrewâs forehead.
Andrew sniffed, pulling back to itch his nose on the topmost layer of the mountain of blankets he was buried in.
âYouâd let him kidnap you?â Snow asked.
âYeah, Iâd⌠Iâd let him uh.â Andrew paused, his thoughts leaving him for a moment as another tremor wracked through his body. Heâd never been this cold before. He tried to focus on what he was saying⌠What was he saying?
ââŚYou should lay down.â Snow offered, they placed one hand at the back of Andrewâs neck and tried to ease him down with their other hand against his chest.
Andrew gripped the back of the couch and suddenly pulled himself back into a sitting position. âIâd let himâuh! Kidnap me. At eight o' clock. On a Friday. But he has to clean his car first.â
Snowâs hand hovered in place for a second, but they promptly placed a pillow down and tried to lower Andrew down again. Andrew didnât fight this time, but he didnât stop talking either.
âHe can take me to TJâs on the Lake. Or that restaurant on the riverboat if heâs feeling fancy. Do you guys have the money for that?â
Snow didnât answer. They made sure Andrewâs feet were covered by the mountain of blankets.
âHe also⌠also has to carry me inside. Like how he carried me to the van today.â
âHm. Iâll let him know.â Snow answered. They brought the mug up to Andrewâs lips again. âHow do you feel?â
âI feel optimistic.â Andrew said when they took the mug away. âLike, thereâs some potential. It depends on if we have anything in common, or if heâs got any red flags I donât know about. I donât normally go for blondes either, butââ
âI mean physically.â Snow interrupted. âHow do you feel physically?â
âOh, bad.â
Snow nodded. âStay awake. Iâm going to see where our electric blanket is.â
Andrew nodded, looking up to the ceiling. âAre you sure Iâm not kidnapped?â
Snow looked over their shoulder, âI think I would know.â
Andrew played with the fleece of the blanket. He was grateful to be able to feel his fingers again. âYou wouldnât tell me though. Youâd just do something like⌠Throw me in a van and drive me to a warehouse. And give me poison tea.â
Snow paused, turning to lean against the door for a moment. âAnd dry clothes?â
âYeah.â Andrew nodded.
âAnd lots of blankets?â They asked.
âYeah, you wanna keep me alive.â
Snow thought for a moment, taking a deep breath before they answered. âWell, Iâm sure you have lots of vital information behind all your fantasies about my teammate. But this isnât a kidnapping.
âYouâll die out there.â Snow motioned toward the window. âWeâll let you leave as soon as the storm passes.â
Andrew looked out the window, sniffing again as he watched the storm outside. He looked back to Snow, feeling every bit as pitiful as he must have looked.
Snow crossed in front of him. They lifted his head to place another pillow gently beneath him. âIn the meantime, youâre safe. The teaâs not poisoned. Iâm going to get a regular, safe, non-lethal electric blanket for you.â
Andrew nodded. He moved one hand to blindly feel for the back of the couch again. Snow took his wrist and eased him back down into the pillows.
I just...really needed to write these. I desperately needed these little scenes out of my head. Have some war mage vignettes!
TWs: stitches, alcohol, discussion of being shot in the head, near death experiences
"So that's the intel. Get to bed. Lights out." Luis said, wrapping up the meeting in the war mages' living room. "It's going to be a long day tomorrow. We set off at dawn."
All of them stood, stretching and turning to head back to their rooms, until Laredo stopped. "Hey, Luis."
"Hm?" Luis paused, gathering up his notebooks. "What is it?"
"Can I have a kiss goodnight?"
Luis' expression shifted through several expressions before settling on confusion. "What...no." He said, as his almost thirty-year-old subordinate pouted.
"Not on the lips!" Laredo argued, committing to the bit. "On the forehead! You never give us good night kisses!"
The others held their breath. Mariano almost wasn't sure what to do from here. Laredo was the one least likely to get yelled at over a joke like this, and he was glad that Manuel hadn't decided to ask.
Luis pinched the bridge of his nose, shaking his head as he let out a tired laugh. "If all the objectives get done before the time limit is halfway over, we'll see about one. Now go to bed."
The living room erupted into cheers from all five men, and Luis left, still shaking his head as he closed the front door.
--
"We're gonna die here." Manuel muttered, huddled up in a corner. His knees were drawn to his chest as Mariano stitched a deep gash in his arm closed.
Dimitri shot a glare at their medic from his post at the doorway of their dim room. "We're not going to die here." He hissed. "I don't care that this was a fucking trap. We don't die."
Laredo nodded. "Remember? A war mage isn't dead until there are two bullets in his brain."
Izan hummed. "I still think one is enough for that. I don't think I'd want to fight after getting shot in the head, at all."
"I would." Dimitri growled. "I'd wanna take it out and reforge it and then shoot it back. Our magic is hot enough, it wouldn't take long."
Mariano nodded, frowning. "I don't think I'd want to shoot the bullet back, but I'd want to hit them with my magic."
"But what if you can't see them?" Izan asked. "Because of the blood, or whatever."
"He has two hands, and his mouth." Laredo said. "He doesn't cast from his eyes, and that's still like. Three chances."
Manuel hummed. "It might work, I guess."
"Alright, alright." Dimitri said, rolling his eyes. "If Manuel isn't bleeding out anymore, we need to get out of here. We only have fifteen before Luis leaves."
The others collectively grumbled their agreement, donning their casting masks and gloves again before resuming their escape.
--
"I still don't know how you survived that, Rookie." Izan said, sipping the margarita that Laredo had poured. "I thought you would've been crushed."
Dimitri laughed. "Yeah, I saw that whole building coming down on you and thought you were about to just be a stain on the concrete."
Mariano took a long drink, relishing the burn of the alcohol he absolutely was not supposed to have. Laredo had insisted, and given him the group's special cup. It was the one with glitter inside the plastic that rolled around as you tilted it.
"Oh, me too." He said, setting it down on the table as he leaned back in his seat. "I thought I was gonna just--." Mariano held one hand up, parallel to the floor, and clapped his other hand firmly against it.
"You even dug your way out in like, five minutes." Laredo said, sliding a water towards Mariano. "The guys who did it had barely left."
"Guess I'm just a cockroach, huh?" Mariano said, grinning.
Manuel started laughing, gripping his own arms as he threatened to tip over onto the floor. "I like it--I wanna be a cockroach." He said, wiping tears from his eyes.
"Me too," Laredo said, grinning. "Let's be cockroaches. You can't just assume we're dead until you actually see us die."
"To being cockroaches." Izan said.
"Cockroaches!" The rest of them echoed, raising their drinks high.
--
Luis came back into the briefing room, two boxes of pizza balanced on one hand. He didn't look happy, but he also didn't look furious. "Laredo." He said, dropping both boxes onto the meeting table. "This is a secure site, you cannot order pizza to here."
"I didn't!" Laredo said, with the desperation of a man wrongly accused. "I swear, I don't even have my phone on me." He pointed at the metal lock-box where their personal affects were stored before missions.
"You can schedule a delivery." Luis argued. "I've done that before, when I knew my day would be busy."
"No! Guys, back me up. I wouldn't do that again." Laredo pleaded, looking around the room.
Dimitri shrugged. "You only got twenty laps the last time you did it, I don't know..."
"Dimitriiii." Laredo dropped his head to the table as he whined, defeated.
Luis shook his head, opening his mouth to start lecturing his elite group of soldiers who certainly should have known better, when there was a knock at the door. It opened after a moment, and Luis' direct boss poked his head in, looking concerned. Luis looked over, tone already lightening up. "General Lanzo, how can I--"
The general's face washed over with relief when he saw the pizza on the table. "Ah, there it is, thank you Luis." He said, fully entering the room, paper plates in hand. "I don't know why they called you, I gave my name and number to the pizza place for the driver."
Luis watched in disbelief as the man in charge of him started loading pepperoni pizza slices from the top box onto the plates and passing them out to the war mages.
"I had a feeling this might happen, so I ordered an extra." General Lanzo handed Luis his plate last. "As thank you, for driving out to the gate to get it and putting up with my interruption. Enjoy!" With a wave, he picked up the empty box, along with his own, and left the room.
All five mages looked between each other, then to Luis, still frozen and holding his cheap paper plate. They were silent until Manuel spoke up. "So...can we...?"
Defeated, Luis dropped down into his chair, massaging his temples. He waved a hand, picking up his own pizza. "Yes. Yes. Ten minutes." He said, wearily. "It would be a waste of the protocol breach not to."
"I wish he was our boss." Izan said, as dry as ever.
Luis laughed, shaking his head. "Trust me, you don't."
This is it!! The finale for my @whumpril saga!! Thank you @brinkofdiscovery for letting me borrow your hot beautiful amazing dragon priest!!
TWs: Non-explicit gore (impalement)
Holding Hands | Human Shield | âDonât let go.â
"It's okay." Mariano said, one hand resting on Santiago's bicep. "If we need to, I can distract it."
The priest certainly couldn't fight the feral, adolescent dragon that was roaring and carrying on in the field they needed to cross. It hadn't been there when they'd crossed on their way to the spring, but that didn't really matter. This was the only way into town--at least, the only way that wouldn't take them another three days to get to.
That wasn't an option; Acero needed this holy spring water sooner rather than later.
"We...what is your plan?" Santiago asked, dark eyes glancing to Mariano as they huddled under their cover. Nerves tinged his normally-steady voice.
Mariano hummed, gaze staying on the dragon. "We can't sneak past it. We just need to run." He glanced to Santiago, making sure their jars of holy water were still wrapped and secure in Santiago's bag. "I'm going to keep its attention. No matter what happens, you just need to keep running."
Santiago swallowed before nodding. "Let's go." Together, they both burst from the cover.
The mass of brilliant, red scales went quiet. It turned its head. Mariano felt his blood chill as the dragon spotted them. He locked eyes with it. With a roar it charged, talons kicking chunks of dirt and flowers high up into the clear sky. Wings spread, head low to the ground, the dragon quickly started to close the distance.
Magic springing to his palms, Mariano turned his focus to his opponent. Santiago knew what to do. He knew he had to just keep running. Two shots of magic sailed through the air, hitting the dragon square in the nose and forehead. The shining plasma dispersed over the dragon's face like sparks from a campfire, not slowing it in the slightest.
Intense red eyes locked onto Mariano, though, ignoring the colorful priest in the fluttering clothes. It snarled out a challenge, sending fire spewing towards Mariano. He dove out of the way, rolling to his feet and back into a run. He needed to stay between Santiago and the dragon no matter what.
Mariano threw more magic, aiming at the dragon's face, blast after blast ineffectively bursting against the scales.
They were almost there. The wards around the town were just there, just another minute of running away. The sound of claws ripping through earth and snapping teeth were so nearby. A massive thud made Mariano whip his head around, just in time to see the dragon turning, furious eyes locked on them both.
The dragon's spine-covered tail sliced through the air. Santiago was still too close to be safe. Mariano lunged for him, managing to shove him to the grass, below the arc. The tip of the tail caught Mariano, wicked spikes digging into him.
Mariano's breath was stolen by the impact, unable to even cry out. He was flung through the air, past Santiago, to tumble to a stop in the flowers. Something was still lodged in him, he realized in his daze, as he tried to push himself back to his hands and knees.
Mariano collapsed, his limbs only managing to tremble when he tried again. Looking down, it didn't take more than a moment to figure out what had happened. One brilliant, ruby spine was sticking out from his stomach. It had torn through his shirt. When he breathed, it made his back scream.
He looked up again.
Santiago stood between him and the dragon now, broad shoulders squared. He had something in his hands, some glass jar filled with a powder. He wasn't running.
"No...!" Mariano gasped. He tried to pull his magic to his hands, but Santiago reaching into his bag stopped him.
The dragon snapped its jaws toward them, and in a flash, Santiago ripped the lid off and threw the jar at its mouth. The dragon jerked as its jaws closed, long neck recoiling backwards with a harsh cough. As though the jar had been filled with the most disgusting thing the young dragon had ever tasted, it scrambled away.
"What...?" Mariano tried to ask what that was. Did Santiago have dragon repellent on him for these trips?
Santiago's attention turned to Mariano then, as he hurried over and knelt at his side. "Oh--gracious." His hands hovered over Mariano's torso, fingers hardly even coming close to the wicked spine lodged in him. "That's. That's going all the way through you."
Mariano swallowed and nodded. "We...I have brink potions." He said. "In my bag."
"Will it be enough?" Santiago asked, eyes finally breaking away from the wound to focus on Mariano's face. "We have doctors in town."
Mariano reached a hand up to place on Santiago's forearm, trying to take a breath. "It will...it will keep me stable. Just...help me back to the temple, first. Please. I can walk."
Santiago looked Mariano over again and hummed. "Back to the temple, then. We can call for a doctor on the way."
Instead of reaching for Mariano's outstretched hand, Santiago scooped him up into his arms and stood. Mariano couldn't help the undignified squeak that escaped, or how he twisted his fingers into Santiago's robes. "Santiago, what--"
"It wouldn't be right to risk you hurting yourself worse. We aren't far now." Santiago said, holding Mariano carefully as he started picking up his pace. "I've got you." His voice was careful, exceedingly gentle, and made Mariano's chest twist in a new, different way. "You'll be okay."
Mariano couldn't exactly argue with that, especially as the pain began to dull to a consistent ache. "Thank you." He said, starting to relax in Santiago's arms. Santiago knew what to do.

Introduction for a fun little arc Iâm gonna do with Marcello! Thereâs a mention of Gabe, who belongs to @crash-bump-bring-the-whump
Contains: Brief gore, blood, overstimulation
__
It looked like any other rendezvous point: a dilapidated old warehouse in the middle of nowhere, a locked metal door with a seemingly broken keypad next to it, a camera with a broken indicator light staring down at him from the corner of the building. Marcello punched in the number heâd been given, a 16 digit code heâd had to write on his arm to remember. The door swung open by itself, and slammed shut as soon as he stepped inside.
âWelcome!â A voice spoke up over gravelly speakers. Soft blue lights lit up under Marcelloâs feet, leading the way further into the warehouse. âNot a second late, Iâm surprised!â
âYeah, well. Your directions were pretty exact.â Marcello walked forward. The lights on the floor reminded him of a movie theater, the way they lined a clear path in the darkness.
âDonât bother responding, I didnât install microphones in the entryway.â The voice was light and excited. âYou have a reputation for being quite effective, but also chatty. I just figured I wouldnât give you the chance for the latter.â
Marcello wrinkled his nose, looking up at the speaker on the wall with a scowl.
âWrong way!â The speaker teased. âIf you want to glare at me, the cameraâs on the opposite wall.â
Marcello didnât look for the camera. He just rolled his eyes and kept walking, following the path of lights as it stretched on in front of him.
âNow, Iâm sure youâve gathered that you wonât be seeing me in person today. So Iâll tell you about your target from here.â The voice followed Marcello through the hallways, every tinny s cutting through the speakers like a knife. â His name is Gabriel Rivasâletâs call him a crime boss, for lack of a better term.â
Marcello rounded a corner. A pistol sat on a table lit by a single humming lamp.
âIâve set all of this up so as to not be traceable back to you. Iâll be dropping you off right outside the doors to his penthouse. All you need to do is get in and get out. Can you do that?â
âYeah, yeah. I can do that.â Marcello answered.
âAgain, donât talk. I canât hear you.â The voice came from a computer speaker on the table now. âIf you accept, just take the gun and keep going.â
Marcello threw his head back in frustration and snatched the gun off the table.
âGood!â The voice eagerly followed him into a speaker in the hallway. âNow, youâll know the building youâre supposed to be in when youâre there. I promise. Youâll only be a few blocks away from it at the dropoff point.â
The strangerâs voice followed him into a large room at the end of the hallway. Squinting against the dark, Marcello could recognize it as an interrogation room. A two-way mirror was set into the far wall, the blue LEDs stopped at the doorway, barely illuminating a wooden chair in the center of the room.
âHave a seat,â The voice said, âWeâre almost ready.â
Hesitantly, Marcello walked to the wooden chair and sat down.
âGood, now. Remember: youâll know when youâre there. Take the elevator to the top floor, stay in the shadows. Gabriel is a huge, towering giant of a man. Take him out from behind and get out as quickly as you can. Weâll be waiting for you outside.â
The door to the interrogation room closed on its own. What little light was left in the space disappeared.
âAnd if anything happens.â The strangerâs voice crackled over the speakers. âAim for the horns.â
âAim for theâ what?â There was a sudden heavy click from the chair, and a sudden biting pain in Marcelloâs arm. He shot up, feeling metal slide smoothly out of muscle and skin. His hand clasped around his bicep, and he turned with wide eyes to the chair behind him. Through the darkness he could see a blade protruding from the wood, and a mechanism set into the wood that had apparently released it into his arm.
He moved his hand, wordlessly looking down at the blood already coating his fingers. He pressed his hand back over the wound, but he didnât feel like it would do much to stop the bleeding; He could feel blood flowing down his bicep and gathering at the crook of his elbow.
A single drop of blood fell to the floor.
The room around Marcello lit up with a vibrant gold light. Suddenly sigils covered the walls, the ceiling, they were even etched into the glass of the mirror. He looked down, gold light melted into red; the sigils around his feet were blinding, and as he looked back up he realized the rest of the room was too.
âHeyâfuck, stop!â He shouted. The sigils around him seemed to whine, almost sing, light pulsing with the beat of his heart. He hid his face behind his arm, doing whatever he could to shield his eyes from the pain of the steadily growing light around him. âWhat the fuck is this?! Stop!â
He fell to the floor, hands over his ears as he doubled over to bury his face in his knees. The singing was deafening, the light painful. Noise filled the room as Marcello did his best to hide from it all and then suddenly, it was silent.
He looked up, blinking away the negative images of the sigils that floated in his vision. Skyscrapers stretched into an unnaturally blood red sky; distantly he could hear someone screaming. As he listened closer, he realized he could hear screaming filtering in from every direction.
Pain surged through his arm, blood dripping onto the pavement below himâwherever he was, he was alive. This was real.
A little followup to today's drabble because that one got way too long but this scene would not stop haunting me. This takes place a few days afterwards!
TWs: hospitals, mention of drugging
It felt like Mariano was trying to claw his way back to consciousness through quicksand. Awareness was soupy, and refused to stay within his grasp. He shivered under the blankets draped over him as the void in his chest roared, and pulled his lips into a thin, uncomfortable line.
A hand came to rest on his forehead. Long fingers that smelled like lighter fluid and pain brushed the hair away from Mariano's face. Something in the voice that shushed him settled his nerves, pulling the tension from his frown and his focus away from the emptiness.
Nothing unexpected happened when that voice spoke.
Mariano relaxed, listening to the voice when it told him to breathe deeper. It said he wasn't in trouble. Something uncoiled in his chest at those words. He started to hear them clearer.
"I don't know many mages who could've fought those pills as long as you did, Ortiz." It said. "You didn't want to fail, did you?"
Mariano hummed, a vague noise that tipped downwards. "Nn..."
"You did fail." The voice didn't sound angry. "I recognize an impossible battle when I see one, though." The hand on his forehead stayed where it was. It kept Mariano still against his pillow. "You went down fighting."
The hand left and blankets were pulled up higher, to Mariano's shoulders.
"I'll remember how hard you tried, even when you knew you couldn't win. I like that in my soldiers." A chair scraped against the floor.
The voice was farther away, harder to understand as the fog rolled back in and started to swallow Mariano. "Rest now, Marito. Relax. You're responding today, so you're almost through it. You'll be awake tomorrow."
As Mariano fell beneath the quicksand again, he couldn't shake the feeling that he shouldn't disappoint whoever had been there.
