While I donāt think ableism as we know it would exist in Star Wars, I think thereād definitely be a prejudice against POOR disabled people.
Because, in the setting of Star Wars, most disabilities can actually be cured. If you have enough money.
Paralysed? Exoskeleton or spinal implant. Even full limb replacement if you want.
Missing a body part? We can make a new one, and itās fully functional, not just decorative.
Burns or other surface injuries? Bacta.
And if you donāt want any of those procedures for whatever reason, you can buy a droid which will look after you and complete tasks for you.
But if youāre impoverished, you donāt get any of that. Youāre stuck with the limitations of your organic body and itās natural healing capacity.
I imagine on Coruscant, if you reach the lower levels, thereās probably a lot more people who are visibly disabled. People who cannot afford the extremely expensive care that the rich get.
This would probably get them labeled āuncivilisedā, āleechesā, āuselessā, ālazyā, etc ect. Theyāre unable to work because of their disability. Because they cannot work, they donāt have any money. Because they donāt have any money, they canāt get treated. People look at them and go āwow, they canāt afford to get treated. What a bum, why donāt they go and work?ā
And while this obviously already exists in real life, and is a big and horrible part of living in a capitalist society, itās likely a lot more torturous to experience in a universe where basically any physical ailment can be cured with a snap of the fingers and a box of credits. Cancer, missing limbs, paralysis, can all be reversed in near perfection. There IS a way out. But itās behind a locked door and you donāt have the key.
