Brigitte set the items in the box, one by one. The sheaf of parchment dotted with musical notes, elegantly handwritten and tied neatly with a bit of ribbon. Several cassette tapes and a cassette player. And finally, on top, a cloth doll with pale yellow yarn for hair, wearing a shimmery ruffled dress, all stitched by hand and adorned with a tiny, glittering tiara. The rest of the things, she placed into a brand new satchel. Several more sheets of music. Charcoal sketches, hazy and dreamlike, of dark, wavy hair and fluttering eyelashes and soft smiles. The vampire paused with the last item in her hands. A matching doll made of tan muslin and black yarn, dressed in a dark green tunic and beige trousers. She stared at it for a long moment, glancing over at the box of things, then back. Eyes burning with tears that wouldn't fall, she pressed her lips to its hair and set it beside the satchel that would never be filled now. Smoothing her hands over the box, she fastened a ribbon over it and carried it toward Carter's room.
