Shannon Dyck, the wonderful co-lead on this project, wrote this great summary of Radiance Cohousing:

“Radiance Cohousing is a friendly, green community located in the heart of the Canadian prairies. The 9-unit townhouse development is currently under construction, with completion anticipated for winter 2018.

The project uses a cohousing ("collaborative housing") development approach, is designed to meet Passive House building standards, and incorporates sustainable landscaping techniques. By combining cohousing with environmental design, this project will showcase what's possible in terms of sustainable infill housing in cold-climate, urban settings.

The project is being led by a diverse group of residents—of varying ages, professions, and backgrounds. The members (the future homeowners) have pooled their resources, formed a development company, and are actively working together to plan, design, manage, and construct their own homes.

The number of cohousing projects in Canada is growing. Not only is it a repeatable development model, but it accommodates diverse household structures, provides residents with more social and financial security, and places community and quality of life at the forefront of design. It appeals to a diversity of people and fills a gap in the current housing market by providing community to those who are seeking it.

Passive House is an international building standard that is gaining traction in Canada and abroad. Hundreds of projects have been completed in North America alone, and the approach has been established as one of the most energy-efficient and economically viable design methods currently available. For example, Radiance Cohousing will use 90% less space heating than a regular Canadian home, which is achieved through super insulation (R65), air tightness, proper ventilation, and good quality south-facing windows. Each household will see a return on investment because the approach significantly reduces the monthly costs of living.
