Hello, Ink! I haven't popped in here in a bit but I come to share my ramblings on why i think IGBP deserved a second part and while the original felt incomplete
(to me. I am not saying that igbp itself is incomplete and that ppl who disagree are wrong, i just had some issues with it and think it deserved more. ok now onto my insane ramblings)
Okay so. IGBP. Basic plot from what i remember is that SMG4 is obsessed with making the perfect video and he ends up corrupting the entire castle in his effort to do so. SMG3, Meggy, and Mario end up having to save him and they go through the castle looking for him.
What ticks me off about IGBP being incomplete is the scene with the recolors frozen in glass/ice(?). SMG3 i think said that SMG4 was probably obsessed with how popular he was back in that era and wants to relive that fame, but that doesn't make sense to me. Why would he want to relive the fame of being a recolor?? He clearly enjoyed his time having his own model, and his plot in IGBP is about trying to make the perfect video to make him famous now. If the reason was he was trying to recreate that same boom of fame, I think it would've been better, but idk.
There's also the room with the paintings and it's all SMG4's thoughts. I love me a self-hating perfectionist character as much as the next guy but this part felt hollow, shoved in to give SMG3 some character development and motivation.
Now how would a second part fix IGBP? For starters, it can fix the issue with SMG3's character motive. One great interpretation of IGBP part 2 is in the SMG4 Apprenticeship AU(found on AO3 it's fucking awesome) where SMG3's character motive was changed from "oh he used to be better than me but now he's worse i gotta fix him" to "we're both not getting better, but we can fix each other together" and I think that works great, even without the blatant SMG34 subtext.
As for the mirror room with the recolors I think it could've been done away with entirely, I get what they were going for and they succeeded in hitting people smack in the face with nostalgia but the relevance behind it felt lacking.
I'm gonna reiterate this is MY OPINION and that if ANYONE DISAGREES they can kindly IGNORE IT. anyway thank you for coming to my ted talk
I locked in the moment you said "IGBP deserved a second part" LMAO
you do bring up some good points, and I agree. I know there has been some scrapped ideas and we ended up the version that we get, which isn't bad at all btw, but it definitely needed some refinement. ALSO Apprenticeship AU (shout-out to that series) and yeah I loved that change in motive bc it fits right in; not everyone is handling everything a 100% but it doesn't mean we have to face it alone.
the mirror scene, which was after that hallway scene, was just the old version of 4, his recolor version (I wanted to correct you on that one). The one way I could explain it was that while he is happy with his new unique form, there is some guilt 4 has for dragging his friends along into what was the Lawsuit arc. It was his problem to deal with, but his friends were affected by the events, where they essentially got killed. So there's that self-blame, but also that black-and-white view 4 had. In his recolor era, things were much simpler to deal with; everyone had their scripts to play. But then, especially a reflection of irl, his audience preferred his old self, preferred his old humor. Even if he changed so he could be with his friends, even if his job as guardian was to engage with recent memes. All he wanted was to spread joy to the world, and prove his friendship to the Crew bc he thought that his videos were his worth.
Man, I really wished they held on to that mirror motifs earlier in the arc for a better payoff. again, it worked well at the time, but it would've hit harder if we had. idk 4 slowly despising his reflection or smth.
And hey, there's nothing wrong of critiquing something and still like it. I mean, I do that, so no shame here :) IGBP absolutely deserved a second part "yeah we know" ...no need to call me out like that. anyway that's why I got an AU (and planned-fic wip) called Return to Perfection that really dives deep into character motivations and the perfection theory. and body horror, it's me who saying it aka that crazy theorist. wish we had a chance for part 2 in canon, but that's what AU's and fics are for
