“This town is enough to drive anyone insane.”
Brian Farnham grew up in Manchester and always wanted to be a police officer. He met Lauren Hayes and Darren Walker on the force and he and Darren were partnered up together. The two became fast friends and ended up spending a lot of time together, even fighting over the same girl, another officer Lauren Hayes, at one point. One job, when he and Darren were staking out a house where missing eighteen-year-old Alison DeLuca was believed to be being held. There’d been a gunshot from inside and they’d both scrambled out of the car. Brian went in the front, Darren went round the back. A gun was lying on the floor next to a body and noise was coming from the kitchen. Without thinking, Brian picked up the gun and ran into the kitchen. At first he saw nobody, only heard frantic scrabbling in a cupboard, but when the figure rushed round the door he didn’t think. He just fired the gun. And, just like that, Alison DeLuca was dead. Brian was dismissed while an investigation into the incident went on but he was luckily allowed to keep his job, though was relocated to Baberton. Brian was never really the same after that.Â
He’s never quite been able to pass his Detective exam, which has made him a little bitter towards those who have, but he doesn’t stop trying and is determined that one day he’ll get there. He knows he’s damn good at his job but is far too proud to tell anybody that he has a learning disability that makes everything on the page in front of him become a jumble of letters that he can’t understand. He sees it as a weakness and is determined to do it on his own.
Brian found the Annie Pierce case very hard to deal with, and it was incredibly frustrating not to be able to just find the killer. Years, and they’re no closer than they were when Annie first went missing. It really started to frustrate him, the fact that this case seems so twisty and has so many layers… Brian sometimes felt like it was a game that nobody can win. Before he left, he couldn’t wait for this case to be over. In fact, he’d probably gladly have pinned it on the first person he could find with enough motive just to get the damn thing over with.
A lot happened in Brian’s time in Baberton. He met Lucy Blair and Macey Cross, both cool girls who he quite liked. Macey had an edge about her but Lucy wound up being the reason Brian found himself in a world of trouble. They had a flirtationship going but then her crazy ex came around and tried to kidnap her. When she shot him in her father’s house, she called Brian and he rushed round there to her aid. They moved the body and pushed his car into the lake. He eventually skipped town, heading for London after the pressure of what he’d done by covering up Tim’s murder got too much for him to handle. He came back after Lucy was sent to prison for Tim’s death but then he since disappeared again.
When Macey Cross called him, saying she needed somewhere to stay, Brian didn’t hesitate to tell her to come to Liverpool, where he was living. She stayed with him a few weeks until he managed to help her get her own place. They drifted in and out of contact and she didn’t really tell him about her daughter Sophia. He felt a bit out of the loop and then recently she moved back to Baberton to be close to family. Brian had been back and forth between there and Manchester, hearing about Lauren and Darren now being in Baberton to help the police with the serial killers. Brian has been living quite a simple life the last few years. He went into security and works a few shifts a week. It’s less fast paced and his life feels less cluttered and heavy. He still suffers but he sees a psych about the DeLuca case and is hoping one day he won’t need it.
Something has recently drawn Brian back to Baberton though. A call from Macey Cross, distraught after Jamie Kirk kidnapped her daughter during the carnival. They didn’t know it was Jamie at the time, just -A. Always -A. Brian came back and decided to stay so he could be close to his friend again, and also reconnect with Lauren and Darren. Jamie was eventually caught and arrested but now Sasha Miller has been released from prison. Annie Pierce’s killer. Brian is angry about that and even though he’s not on the job anymore, he wants to keep an eye on her. He got a job as a security guard in the local hospital and Brian is settling back in to Baberton life slowly but surely.
He used to take pills every night to knock himself out because he was so completely haunted by the ghost of Alison DeLuca’s case. It got very bad and deep and dark and Brian wasn’t sure he’d ever find his way out of that hole. It got worse when -A tasked Macey Cross with swapping out his usual pills for something a little more dangerous. He had a few scares and was eventually dismissed from the job after he passed out and they discovered the drugs in his system. He doesn’t know Macey was the one -A got to switch out his pills. In the end it turned out to be a blessing because Brian was growing disillusioned with being a cop and was only still on the job to get to information about Tim’s murder first. He doesn’t take the pills anymore but he still suffers nightmares and terrors so he’s often tempted.
Covered up Tim Lewis’ murder after Lucy Blair shot him after her attempted to kidnap or kill her. Lucy eventually turned herself in for the murder, leaving his name out of it. Brian still kept in touch with her in Wales and he’ll always feel close and sort of indebted to her almost.
